Could someone tell me why the Macon County Tennessee Historical Society put an Historical Marker up for Benjamin Poe? Did he ever live in Macon County? Does someone on the list know more of his history than I? Benjamin Poe was born August 14, 1749. His wife was Comfort Johnson (1751-1805). He died in 1839, I understand in Allen County, Kentucky. In 1833, at the age of 84 he gave a deposition that he entered the service in the Revolutionary War in Dec. 1775 in NC and then moved to Randolph County NC. In Sept 1781 he served again in the company of horsemen under Captain T. MARSH. He re-enlisted in Dec. 1781 again in the company of mounted infantry under Captain CHARLES GOULDSTON. "Having served this tour he returned to Randolph County, NC and found his dwelling house reduced to ashes. His property was destroyed, his wife and children driven away by the Tories and cast upon the charity of the world for support." He re-entered military service in March 1782, was in no major battle but in several skirmishes. He stated in his deposition that he "resided in the counties of Chatham and Wake in North Carolina and the counties of Barren, Monroe and Allen, KY where he now lives."(1833) He was involved with the early part Puncheon Camp Baptist Church, Allen Co. Kentucky, being one of nine members who entered the constitution of the Puncheon Camp church in 1804. I know some of his descendants lived in Macon County, including my husband's great grandmother. Was the marker set up because of them? Thanks for any help. Melody _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
