1. [ROOTWALKER] Parton/Pardon look up please - Reply to BJ.
2. Good morning BJ, I'm sorry, but there aren't any members of the PARTON or PARDON families mentioned in the "Hickman County, Tennessee, Deed Book B." This book is for the years of 1811 through 1813, so your clan could have moved into the area later than the time period of this book. There are, however, some members of the BROWN family found in this book. They are: BROWN, Claburn BROWN, Claybourn (I think these first two names are the same person.) BROWN, George BROWN, Jonathan BROWN, William. If any of these people are of interest to you, please let me know and I'll provide you with what is said about them. Please give me the names one at a time, though, if you need the info about more than one of these people. No members of the HOWARD family are found in this book, either. 1. [ROOTWALKER] Rootswalker Posting - Reply to Lynda
2. Good morning Lynda, The questions you present are very easy to answer. The original land grant that you posted to the UsGenWeb was issued by the state of North Carolina. At the end of the American Revolution, many of the patriot soldiers were paid for their service with land grants. Part of what is now Tennessee was once designated as a "North Carolina Military District," which was settled largely by persons who had land grants. In the early part of 1789, the land that is now Tennessee was still part of North Carolina. When North Carolina ceded the land that now makes Tennessee to the US Government in 1789 to form the Southwest Territory, it reserved the right to satisfy further land grants in the region. Tennessee was made a state of the United States on June 1, 1796. Later, the state of Tennessee continued to honor these land grants. North Cross Creek, mentioned in the land grant of Mr. THOMPSON, is in Stewart County, Tennessee. It is almost directly across the Cumberland River from South Cross Creek. Several of my ancestors had land grants on or near North Cross Creek and their lands were in the area of Indian Mound in Stewart County, Tennessee. Just to be sure there wasn't another North Cross Creek in the area I checked my maps and then searched GNIS for another stream by the same name and there isn't one in Tennessee. To help you further, here is the sequence of the county names that North Cross Creek has been in: 1. It was part of the land included in the Transylvania Purchase of March 17, 1775. (In 1783, part of this Purchase was formed into Davidson County, North Carolina.) 2. In 1788 this land became Tennessee County, North Carolina. 3. In 1796, this land became Montgomery County, Tennessee. 4. In 1803, the land that is now Stewart County was taken from Montgomery County. I hope I have helped answer your questions. If not, please don't hesitate to let me know and I'll see if we have any more information in the ROOTWALKER library about this region. Now, pertaining to your THOMPSON and PARKER families. You mention they are found in Davidson and Sumner Counties, which are counties that are within the ROOTWALKER region. We have helped research these two families, primarily in Sumner County in and near the communities of New Deal and Halltown, several times. There are several cemeteries in the area that contain the graves of many people from these families. There is a great deal of information on the ROOTWALKER website that pertains to the THOMPSON and PARKER families of northern middle Tennessee. The address for the ROOTWALKER website, if you don't have it, is: www.rootwalker.com Rootwalker Genealogy Pages for Northern Middle TN--Main Page Thanks for bringing your questions to us.
