    1. [ROOTWALKER] The Bell Witch of TN
    2. Hello Penny, The story of the Bell Witch is one of the great mysteries of Tennessee. I have seen this story on television, I think it was "Unsolved Mysteries" or some program like that, and have heard the story many times growing up. There was a book printed many moons ago about the Bell Witch. This book had a red cover and was about an inch thick. Many children in the area read this book in school, though I don't know if it was required or not. This book from 1894 by M. V. Ingram has been reprinted. If you can't find it, let me know and I'll put you in contact with a place that has it. The Bell Witch Cave still exists in Adams, Tennessee. Vanessa visited it several years ago with some friends, but I haven't been in it. Many spooky stories have originated in that cave! If anyone wants to share them with you on this list I would love to hear them, too! Thanks for being part of the ROOTWALKER family. "God Bless America!" 1. [ROOTWALKER] Reply to Bill - 1830 Middle TN Census of Wilson County
    2. Hello Bill! I haven't been able to find an answer to this question, which is a question that has stumped me for some time. The 1850 Census started showing the names of children but I haven't been able to find any names of children in Census records prior to that. If you can find the name of a person in the 1850 Census, you may find the state of their birth, which may help some. Later Census records sometimes show the county they were born in. This doesn't help in identifying siblings, though. If anyone else helps you solve this problem, please pass their advise on to me! Thanks for being part of the ROOTWALKER family. "Love Your Freedom? 1. [ROOTWALKER] Reply to Stan Hickory Point School 1930 Montgomery Co
    2. jeanne millman
    3. Stan, There are no Walker children mentioned by my aunt. She didn't remember many of the younger students. I'd suggest you take a look at the 1930 census and see if your Walkers lived near the following folks, that might indicate they went to Hickory Point. The Hickory Point teachers in 1930 were Hazel Johnson, dau of Oscar Johnson. She married a Rinehart, I don't know if she was married in 1930. She taught the older students, most of who were related to her and myself. Myra Atkins taught the younger children. I'm related to about 1/2 the children my aunt named. Children of Thomas Coakley: James, Catherine, Horace, Agnes. Ollie (my grandmother's cousin) & Oscar Johnson children: Sarah, Oscar D. Jr. Oscar Johnson Sr was a Deputy Sheriff and the 1920 census enumerator. Lewis Johnson, not sure if he was son of Oscar or Henderson Johsnson and another Johnson boy. Alex Crotzer's dau, Irene. a younger boy last name Crotzer Mallie and Henderson Johnson's daus: Margaret and Marie Russell Carrington, father owned store and gas pump. Lorine Dillihay. Virginia Burton Christine Evans Ernest Davidson and another boy Davidson. A younger student named ImaJean. There are 19 other students unnamed, mostly in the younger group taught by Myra Atkins. 1. [ROOTWALKER] Provident School
    2. Hello Jean, Would you happen to know what county your grandmother was known to live in? If the name of the school was "Providence" rather than "Provident" there were several schools by that name in Tennessee. In the ROOTWALKER region there were four schools that we have reference to that went by the name of Providence. They were in Trousdale, Sumner, Humphreys and Davidson Counties. In the counties of Tennessee that are not part of the ROOTWALKER region there were seven schools that we know of that went by the name of Providence. They were in Lewis, Henry, Henderson, Hancock, Grundy, Giles and Claiborne Counties. There are several communities in Tennessee that are named "New Providence." One of them is in Montgomery County, Tennessee. There is currently a New Providence Middle School located there but I don't know how old it is. There is also a New Providence School in Hamilton County, Tennessee. If your grandmother was in any of the counties mentioned it shouldn't be too hard to find where the school was in that community. 1. [ROOTWALKER] Reply to Gloria - Montgomery County, TN
    2. Good morning Gloria, I am placing your email in our Archives Folder, if you don't mind. We will see if we can find a death certificate for Carl Dean CONLEY. I'll be the first to admit that I don't know everything about all the cemeteries in the ROOTWALKER region, but I do know the Riverview Cemetery pretty well as a zillion or so of my family are buried there. I don't recall ever hearing the Riverview Cemetery called the Blackbottom Cemetery. Prior to being Riverview, I have heard that it was called the City Cemetery. When I was a child my mother and grandmother had an urge almost every evening to go for long walks. Frequently, we walked through Riverview where my grandmother, grandfather and mother would point out graves of people that they knew and explain who they were and their relationship to us. I even found my first arrowhead in that cemetery when I was about 5 years old! A transcription of the Riverview Cemetery that we have in the ROOTWALKER library from the 1930's refers to the cemetery as Riverview. Hopefully, we will find a death certificate for Carl. That should help determine where he is buried. Thanks for being part of the ROOTWALKER family. God Bless America! Around 1930 my family that was in the Hickory Point area would have been of the WALKER family. My grandfather was a WALKER, who married a HODGES lady. I don't know about the HODGES lady you mentioned, but that is not surprising as I find new people that are part of the family all of the time. 1. Re: [ROOTWALKER] TALLEY, Gideon and Elizabeth, Marriage Lookup
    2. Bill Allen
    3. Hi Stan, I found their marriage. G. L. TALLEY married Lizzie WILLIAMS in Dekalb County on 5 Jan 1887. Would you have any information about Lizzie WILLIAMS or their son, Spencer A. TALLEY (born 26 Oct 1887)?
