Jimmie, You are up and at it early this morning. I found Steenbergens in Mercer County, Kentucky. Since Meadors marry in and out of Bob's Blankenship line, (Joel Meador b 1725 is my husband's 5th great grandfather, if my records are correct), I have had contact in the past with Meador reseachers. They have told me to look for Meadow, as well, as Meador was often miswritten or misread as Meadow. I've got to know where the name Maligned HEAD came from!! I know we've all seen some unusual names but that one is special. Additionally, I would be very interested to know who her parents were and whether there is any family oral history to explain the name. In the meantime, I'm still pursuing the Heads of Jackson Co. ......John in particular, brother of Isaac, Nathaniel, etc., son of Benjamin and Fanny Speer from Surrey Co, NC. I'm unable to locate any documentation of his death. He did not reappear in the 1880 Jackson Co. census and I presume that he died between the 1870-1880 censuses. I would be thrilled to find out the whereabouts of his grave and that of his 2nd wife, Mary Carter, which is in Celina according to her death cert. Any help very appreciated on that. Thanks.
Hello everyone, Below is an email that was forwarded to me by a subscriber to the Monroe County, Ky. Rootsweb mail list. I know there are several CHISM researchers that are members of the ROOTWALKER family, so I contacted Mr. Rhoton, who penned this email to the other list and received his gracious permission to post this for the ROOTWALKER reseachers. Mr. Rhoton's email address is at the bottom of the page, if anyone is interested in contacting him. I have removed his personal address and telephone number as a courtesy to him. I hope this is found to be useful to those of you researching the CHISM surname. Thanks for being the ROOTWALKER family, Sincerely, Stan Magnesen ROOTWALKER site/list coordinator ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Several weeks ago Doug Moore mentioned I had done some work on the Chism family of Monroe Co., KY about two years ago. Now that things have calmed down a little at home I'll try to share a few of the things I found. I must say the records for this family are currently in storage pending my upcoming move so I am working from memory but I think I recall enough not to confuse everyone. I. Tradition All of the published works I have encountered identify James Chism and Mary Howard as the progenitors of this particular line. Mary is said to have been a daughter of Obediah Howard and Priscilla Breed of Union Co., SC and Later Barren Co., KY while James' a son of another James Chisum with roots in Amelia Co., VA. Both have tombstones in the Old Mulkey Meeting House Cemetery. They are said to have married in Union Co., SC and traveled to the Barren Co., KY/Monroe Co., KY area with her parents where they lived out the remainder of their lives with James dying in 1819. II. James Chism A search of the Barren County records, including deeds, wills, and tax identify only one James Chism. He is the James who married Phoebe Breed, daughter of Nathaniel Breed, and has been identified as a son of James and Mary (Howard) Chisum. This James first appears in the early 1800's (about 1801 if I recall correctly) and is never referred to as Jr or Sr. Papers involving his estate were filed in 1819 and definitely identify his wife as Phoebe, not Mary. The date of these proceedings is the same as the death date given James Chism in Bodie's Southern Historical Families. The references to James Chism in the minutes of Mill Creek Baptist Church (now Old Mulkey) also appear to be his and not that of an older James. III. John Chism SR Not finding a James Chism who fit what I knew about the James Chism who married Mary Howard I turned my attention to a man who appears in the records of Greene Co., KY and Barren Co., KY. This particular John shows up around 1797 in the Green Co tax lists. He is also present in those of Barren Co, KY until the formation of Monroe County and there until 1821 or so when he literally disappears. It's interesting to note he is the only male in the area of an age to have been the father of John, George, James, Jacob, William and Michael, hereafter referred to as the "Chism boys." Examining his tax records closer, especially the category of males 16 to 21, the numbers correspond well with the coming of age of each successive Chism Boy, i.e. as one appears on the tax list for the first time the number in this category decreases by one. I should note this category first appeared as part of the tax records during the time William and Michael were coming of age and does not apply to the older boys. Turning to the land records, John was granted a tract on Mill Creek during the time it fell within the boundaries of Green Co., KY. He later sold parts this land to John JR, George and Jacob Chism, and if I recall correctly James, Michael and William as well but I'm not sure about that. This dispersal of his property occurs just before he disappears from the Monroe and Barren Records. It seems to me this might indicate the sale of land by a father to his sons in preparation for a move. Nothing of significance was found in the County Order books however the circuit court records have not been examined. Also of interest is letter, apparently from the 1920's, in the Chism family file of the Filson Club in Louisville, KY. The letter was basically written to determine if the Library had any information on the Monroe Co., KY family and notes that James Chism who married Phoebe Breed was the son of John Chism and Mary Gum (not Howard). In a different handwriting someone has noted this John was the son of James Chism and Mary Howard. I will revist the Gum family later. IV. Where did John Chism SR move? I suspect he moved to Lauderdale Co., AL. A John Chism SR and a John Chism JR both appear there in the early 1820's. The John JR of KY also sold his land in Barren Co. and lived briefly in Overton Co., TN as well (this is an important point and I will revisit it later). Both are buried in the Chisholm cemetery there. The inscriptions are as follows: Ester Chisholm 25 Nov 1780 27 Sep 1852 [wife of John Chisholm Jr.] John Chisholm 22 Nov 1775 20 Jul 1847 (broken in three pieces) Mary Chisholm 10 Aug 1748 6 Mar 1827 wife of John Chisholm [Sr.] John Chisholm Senr. 1 Aug 1738 9 Oct 1828 I believe these are the same men as the KY John SR and JR for two reasons. John JR was married to Ester Lynn on 27 Sep 1798 in Greene Co., KY and two of Obediah and Priscilla (Breed) Howard's sons were early settlers of Lauderdale Co., AL. I have not worked with the Lauderdale County records extensively. Land and probate need to be looked at to determine if John SR left a will or probate packet naming his children. V. Was John's wife Mary Howard or Mary Gum? The answer, I believe, is both. Gum as a middle name appears frequently in the Chism family. William and Priscilla (Breed) Chism had a son named William Gum Chism and John and Ester (Lynn) Chism had a son named John Gum Chism. There is also a Norton Gum Chism who appears in Lauderdale Co., AL that may have been a son of John JR. Norton was a Gum family name passed down from the Claypoole family who they intermarried with in Delaware. There also appears to be a relationship between the Gum and Chism families in Barren Co., KY. John Sr's land bordered that of Jesse Gum and the Gum and Chism were often bondsmen or witnesses for each other. The Gum family prior to settling in Barren Co., KY was from Rockingham Co., VA and the surviving tax records there mention a John Chism and Richard Chism. A Richard Chism died in the late 1790's in Green Co., KY and I believe members of the Gum family are mentioned as witnesses in his will but I'll have to check. Jesse Gum, progenitor of the Monroe Co., KY Gum family was the son of Jacob and Sarah (Claypool) Gum, I suspect that John Chism SR married his sister, possibly named Mary, in Rockingham Co., VA and moved with him to Greene Co in the late 1790's. I should note that all of the surviving Chism boys in the 1850 census list their place of birth as VA and William B. Chism's Bible states he was born in VA. Several printed genealogies list their birthplace as SC perhaps in the belief that Mary Howard, who was from SC, was their mother. I suspect Mary Howard was John's second wife who he married after the death of his first wife. Since Obediah Howard did not bring his family to KY until after 1790 (he is listed as head of household on the 1790 Union Co., SC census) and the Chism boys for which we have records were all born several hundred miles away in Virginia I doubt Mary Howard could have been their mother though the possibility cannot be completely ruled out. It was because of Mary's family connections that John SR moved to Lauderdale Co., AL. I have searched for hard evidence Obediah had a daughter named Mary but as of yet have only found references to her in the various genealogies and Church histories all of which are undocumented. VI. John Chism Sr's ancestry Recently Vicki Lemon submitted a copy of an 1835 deed filed in Warren Co., KY to the Jackson_Clay_Overton_TN-L which names a great many of the children and grandchildren of John and Eleanor (Gillentine) Chism among those named were John, Elisha, and Elijah Chism. An Elisha or Elijah Chism, I can't recall which one, is mentioned as living in Jackson Co., TN in the early Barren Co., KY records and Ms. Lemon notes her ancestor Elisha Chism lived in Overton and Jackson Co., TN and as I mentioned earlier John Chism JR also lived in Overton Co., TN. This might suggest a connection between the Monreo Co., KY Chism family and those in the Warren Co., KY. Indeed, the author of the monograph notes the James Chism mention in the deed was the father of James Chism who married Mary Howard. This seems highly suspect to me. Mainly because the only James I can find was the one who married Phoebe Breed. I think a better explanation is that the John mentioned in the deed was the father of the Chism boys. VII. Bringing it all together Okay, in a nutshell, the traditional ancestry of the Monroe Co. Chism family appears to be incorrect. There was no James Chism, at least none that I have found, who married Mary Howard. I suspect John Chism was a son of John and Elener (Gillentine) Chism and that he married first (Mary?) Gum, possibly a daughter of Jacob and Sarah Claypoole Gum, around 1773 and she was the mother of his children. John may have gone to Union Co., SC with Elisha Chism and other members of the Chism family where his first wife died and there married Mary and later moved to Green Co., KY. Alternately, and I believe more likely, he moved directly from VA to KY with his first wife's family and was later joined by members of his own family including his brother Elisha. He married Mary Howard, probably in Green Co, after the death of his first wife and lived in Monroe Co until about 1820 and then moved with his eldest son to Lauderdale Co., AL where Mary had relatives. MUCH more research needs to be done to support this. VIII. All this is fine but what about those tombstones in the Old Mulkey Cemetery Many of the tombstones were placed there when restoration of the Church was begun in the first half of the last century (feels weird writing that) and contain errors. For example: Nathan Breeds Revolutionary war service is incorrect on his stone and there are those in Monroe Co. who claim Hannah Boone Pennington is not buried at Old Mulkey and the marker was placed there to attract tourists to the park. I suspect the graves marked as belonging to James and Mary (Howard) Chism are actually those of James and Phoebe (Breed) Chism mistakenly identified during this time. As I said before a lot of this is from memory and there are those who disagree with my line of thought which is okay. The point is to stimulate research to sort out the family. I do not descend from this family but I am a Gum descendent and thus have an interest in getting it worked out. C. Phillip Rhoton, M.D. e-mail: prhoton@bellsouth.net
Hello Stan, I think I can best answer your question by telling you who my grandparents were, from Stewart County, Tenn. My grandmother was Martha Malinda Cherry daughter of William Norman Cherry and Maligned Head. My grandfather was Joseph Franklin Stone. My father was born in Big Rock, Stewart County, Tenn. I'm not sure how far Indian Mound is from Big Rock, but I think not far. If your Cherry family is from Stewart County, Tenn I imagine we are cousins. I am interested in getting info about Payton Calvin RUSHING who married Elizabeth STONE 10 Oct 1844 in Johnson Co., IL. Elizabeth was born in KY. abt 1825. Payton was also born abt 1826 in KY. After Payton died abt 18 Jun 1856 she married John MAY on 12 Jan 1877 in Johnson Co., IL.. Elizabeth's parents were Reuben STONE b abt 1778 and Elizabeth BRANSCOMB b 1790 both born in VA. William BRANCHCOMB was the father of Elizabeth BRANSCOMB. All parties are listed in the 1850 Census for Johnson Co., IL. Some think Payton was a son of Peter RUSHING from Calloway Co., KY. But Peter's family did not arrive in KY. until after Payton was born. I think Payton is a nephew or grandson, a relative but not a son. Perhaps he is related to the RUSHING's from Trigg Co., KY. If anyone has any info I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks David L. Rushing Rt 2 Box 272A Golconda IL 62938 dlr999@shawneelink.net 618-949-3759
