My father was born in 1923. In 1985, he and my MaMaw went to the court with the family bible in hand and the woman who served as midwife by my GrandMother's side on the kitchen table..... and in 1985, my father got a birth certificate. Makes me wonder how he served in the Navy during WWII. Suppose he needed a birth certificate in order to retire. My husband, born in 1932 had a birth cert filed,as baby Hutcherson, everything on it but his name.I was born in 1937,the same happened with my birth cert,I was baby Midyett.Because I applied for mine at age 14,just my dad's written request was enough. My husband had a Social Security number at the age of 15,but never tried for his birth cert until he was in his 50's, I'm not sure how he got his SS number, maybe before all proof was needed, that's why it took a sworn affidivat from his brother to prove that baby Hutcherson was him. There are a lot of birth certs filed in the 20's and 30's that have all info, but the child's first name.Is there a way to secure such a list?

I believe delayed birth certificates were needed to collect social security when it first started. People would have to provide proof of age and parentage to collect. Since they didn't have birth certificates they had to produce certified documentation. Hence "delayed" birth certificates. They will onlt exist for applicants for SS. Jeane, I didn't get my birth cert. until I was 15 (about 1951) and I had to have it to get my SS # so I could go to work when I was 16. Doctors were not required to send in the birth, I guess. Elsie
I had to apply for a delayed birth certificate due to the fact that the Dr. gave my parents the original copy that should have been filed with the state of Washington and sent in the "complimentary certificate " that was to go to the parents. when I was registered for school the real birth certificate was accepted. Years later when I needed to provide some "certified copies" for insurance and other reasons we learned of the error. My birth had not been recorded because the state had not accepted the complimentary certificate as proof of my birth. I had to provide 6 documents as proof that I existed and was born on the date and place that I claimed. They refused to accept as one of the sources the ORIGINAL certificate which I still have. The reason was that it could have been altered. Using school transcript, marriage certificate, birth record of ONE of my children, baptismal certificate, social security card, and a signed affidavit from my mother. I was issued a delayed certificate which I now have along with the original that was filled out by the Dr. at the time of my birth. Delayed certificates can be used for many reasons, not just for Social Security. The state files these birth certificates as they would any other. Each state varies with their requirements, if you need one, they have forms and list of other documents they will accept as verification. What was Oliver's surname?
My mother born 1931, when she applied for social security, because there was no birth certificate issued, since she was born at home, had to provide notarized statements from 3 living people stating her birth place, birth date, parents etc. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hi List, Someone on one of the Tn lists I'm on mentioned the delayed birth certificates issued in 1940 that can be viewed at TSLA. I have copies of uncles' delayed birth certicates that were issued in years other than 1940. Is there an index for other years for individuals b. 1900-1913 era that can be searched? Are we missing the boat in not trying to find individual's birth info on years that records weren't kept for, because we're told no records exist for those years? When that individual might have a delayed birth certicate issued 27 years later? I didn't connect the reason for my grandmother filling out delayed birth certificates was that her children were born in the time frame when there wasn't requirement for a birth certificate since I had just started genealogy when my aunt sent me those birth certificate copies. I'm wondering if birth certifcates exist for some of my other aunts and uncles that I not aware of. Any TSLA user have more info on this area? Jeanne
