I don't think I made myself very clear in my previous message. My point was that recording births was not required in the state of Ky. until 1911. Even all births were not attended by a physician and were not recorded. People did get delayed birth certificates for one reason or another during their lifetime by getting sworn affidavits from individuals that were present at the birth or had personal knowledge of the time of birth. However, these delayed birth records were not the preferred documents for proof of age upon retirement.
I want to say thanks also. Born in TN, raised in Michigan, lived in MO. for 23 years and now in Alabama and only know a handful of the county seats each in the states I lived in. You guys are great. Keep up the good work. ----- Original Message ----- From: Diana Vickers <DVickers@cbpu.com> To: <TN-ROOTWALKER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, March 15, 2001 11:08 PM Subject: [ROOTWALKER] County Seats > Thank-You for putting up the couny seats. Peg, You are right about where people live... A good portion of my "people" were born, lived and died in TN., but my family was born in Ky. and since 1949 I have lived in Michigan... ( I couldn't even tell you the counties in my area...lol..) Margaret La Rue

To the rootwalker family: Delayed birth certificates were applied for for different reasons. Birth records were not a requirement until 1911 in Kentucky. Louisville had a few earlier than that and they were not the preferred document as proof of age for social security purposes. Schools are a very good source to use for proof of age because they kept records of when a child started school and at what age, so if you know where a person started school that is a good source to go to. I know this because I am a retiree of Social Security.
Hello everyone, Often, when researching in the archives or a library somewhere, people ask what the county seat of a particular county is, or I overhear them talking to themselves wondering the same thing. I know the seats of all the 26 counties covered by ROOTWALKER, but most people don't because they don't deal with all those counties each day, but can't recite all 96 counties or their county seats. So, to help some of you out whenever your research takes you from one county to another, here is a list of all the counties in Tennessee. I am going to put the ROOTWALKER counties at the head of the list because we are sort of partial to them. The county name is first, and the county seat follows. You might want to save this list, just in case...
