Good morning folks! If you are wondering why there have not been any new items put on the ROOTWALKER web site lately, I'll let you know now. Vanessa does the work on the web site. I don't have any idea how to do anything with it. Vanessa has been fairly sick for a couple of months. We don't think it is anything too serious, but she hasn't been able to get well. She is, however feeling much better than she did in February. This has put her really behind on updating the ROOTWALKER web site. We hope this doesn't inconvenience anyone too much. If you have any questions about the web site please contact me in a personal email and I will do my best to answer them. Thank you for your understanding and patience. Sincerely, Stan Magnesen ROOTWALKER site/list coordinator
Does anyone where the Community of WARD is located in Overton County, and who it was named for or any history behind the name.
Hi Ann, Thanks for keeping me on my toes. That area of Hendersonville is building up so quickly that I don't see how anyone stays on top of what is there. There is a cemetery on the ROOTWALKER web site that is in the area around Forest Retreat and Hunt Road. I didn't realize that you could wind around in that area and come out South of Vietnam Veteran's Blvd. on New Shackle Island Road until we went to verify the cemetery and the graves in it. And I thought I knew the neighborhood well! I suppose that if they leave Dodge's Store where it has been forever we can all have a Dodgerdog and soda and all will be OK in the world, though. Thanks for being part of the ROOTWALKER family. You are right about southern part of Forest Retreat being a subdividion. I almost forgot. I was thinking about the northern end of Forest Retreat. Sorry Ann
Forest Retreat is not a subdivision. It is a road. Maybe an area. Very few house there, mostly farms, until 20 years ago. Thanks for all the good work. Ann
Hi Linda, Take a close look at Horse Mountain and the Wartrace area. It seems that everyone I have ever met from the Bell Buckle area were actually from around either Horse Mountain or Wartrace. I hope this little bit of information can help you. Thanks for being part of the ROOTWALKER family. Linda, My g'g'grandparents were William Hedgepeth Nichols and wife Mary (Polly) Claxton Smith Nichols. They lived in the Bellbuckle area of Bedford County. I believe they may have been married there sometime prior to their first child's birth in 1837 but have never found any record. I think the name "Claxton" in Mary's name was probably a family name. Sorry, I couldn't help more. Maybe I am a dummy or something, have always spent hours reading long pedigrees, or long documents seeking one or 2 names. Today I discovered all you have to do is hit control and f and fill in term/surname it searches the pages for you. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? If you are suprised you missed Goshen Town, think how I feel for having missed Stark's Knob!!!!! And there's also Number One. Frog town was just outside Hendersonville, between Walton Ferry Road and Drake's Creek. It got its name from the many, many frogs living on the creek, sometimes their croaking was so loud it was hard to hear normal conversation. I was born in Forest Retreat when ours was only one of two houses there. The other was a large frame house sometimes used as a gambling casino. Every weekend we would watch a procession of cars coming off Gallatin Road (now Rockland Road), crossing the railroad tracks, and stopping on top of the hill. It burned and was replaced by a more modest home which was eventually replaced by the nursing home. In the meantime, "Miss Nannie" had built the lovely cedar log home and Lucien dammed a little creek and created Anderson Lake. It remained mostly woodland until Old Hickory Lake changed the face of Sumner County forever. Joyce
My hometown is in Sumner County also, but it is tooo!!!!! small, *giggle* a church and a cross-roads. Hollis Chapel has no post office, no red lights, no people(except Sundays). __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! Hi Joyce, Wow! I bet you live around Hendersonville! The communities you mention are all in that area. I am surprised I missed Goshen Town. I have a very good friend that lives close to the junction of Goshentown Road and Center Point Road. Forest Retreat is a subdivision, I believe, in the area of Shackle Island, between Center Point Road and Shackle Island Road, north of Vietnam Veterans Blvd. Free Hill is part of the Rockland community of Sumner County. The historical marker you mention is at Rockland on Nashville Pike at Free Hill Road. I wonder if those people could have seen the drive-in theater (when it wasn't flooded). This area was annexed into Hendersonville in 1993, I believe. Frogtown. In Sumner County? You have me on that one! Could you let us know where it is? I will note it on my Sumner County maps if you will. Thanks for letting us know of the communities missed on the list I posted. I was certain that some communities would be missed when I listed them, which is why I said "Most" communities in the counties. Keep up the good work! Thanks for being part of the ROOTWALKER family. Hello Sara, Edenwold is easy. Vanessa and I met in that area a zillion years ago. Go on Gallatin Road, north to Rivergate Mall. Turn Right on Myatt Drive, and go just past Pirelli Armstrong Tire Factory on the corner of Gallatin Road and Myatt Drive. You look to the right and you are looking at the old community of Edenwold. Edenwold Road runs between Myatt Drive and Gallatin Road behind Pirelli Armstrong. Cross the bridge and you are then back in Madison. I hope this helps you. Thanks for being part of the ROOTWALKER family. Sincerely, Stan Magnesen.
