    1. Re: [ROOTWALKER] What did you do to overcome piles of data?
    2. I have been using Family Tree Maker for years to enter all my data and I love it. As I find information on each person or family I enter it into the program . I can access the data in many different ways, enter sources into the notes section, enter stories handed down in the family ( and label them as unproved stories ) and different kinds of reports and trees can be generated. There is also space for a scrapbook section for each person where I scan in pictures, documents, newspaper articles, etc. I keep the orginal copies of everything in a file cabinet for storage, but I use the computer record in FTM to look things up and to trace who is related to who. I know not everyone likes FTM, but I have used it since version 3.0 and I just upgraded to version 8.0. Just thought I would put in my two cents worth since you asked :) Take care Jaime JLeeV196@aol.com

    1. [ROOTWALKER] Where to Search Now?
    2. I am trying to prove that the John William Bloodworth who was killed in WW I is the person I believe him to be. I have John W. Bloodworth, age 16 in the household of his father John Y. Bloodworth in 1910. From TSL&A, I have the selective service draft card and record of soldiers who served in WW I from Sumner County for John William Bloodworth, date of birth 13 Aug 1893. Although I believe John W. and John William are one and the same, I don't have proof. The record shows that a sister Mrs. Bessie Ctom ? received the notification of his death. The Sumner Co. marriage index shows that Bessie Bloodworth married Robert Cron in September 1907. The census record shows a sister named Mary E., possibly Elizabeth shortened to Bessie. There was no Bloodworth named Bessie listed on any census index or record in Sumner Co. in 1900. I requested his file from the Army Records Center only to be told that his records were lost to fire. A request to TSL&A for the questionnaire the State mailed to veterans and to survivors of those killed showed that his family did not return the information. A search of the local Sumner County newspaper following 22 Sep 1918, the date of his death, revealed that the death notice had been cut out of the paper before it was microfilmed. I'm out of ideas. Can someone suggest some record somewhere that might prove that John W. and John William are the same man. Thanks for taking time to read all this, and any suggestions you can give me would be appreciated. Joyce

    1. [ROOTWALKER] Thank-You from Vanessa
    2. Hi everyone, Vanessa asked me to say "Thanks" to all of you that have wished her well in the last few days. I printed all the emails that have been sent and gave them to her along with a great big eclair sort of thing that looked like a giant ice cream sandwich and was covered with chocolate and whipped cream and had a cherry on top. She read the get-wells with a great big smile on her face. Thanks, everyone. Through me from Vanessa.

    1. [ROOTWALKER] SPRINGFIELD,TN, City Directory, 1935
    2. Hello Robertson County, TN researchers! We have gotten a copy of a supplement to the Springfield, Tennessee City Directory of 1935. It contains a Classified Business Directory and a Numerical Telephone Directory for the town of Springfield. The Directory does not have telephone listings for people who lived in the county, just those city folk. No street addresses are given, just names and telephone numbers for individuals. This makes a really neat addition to our growing library of research materials. Stan

    1. [ROOTWALKER] What did you do to overcome piles of data?
    2. Good morning to you all! After reading and trying to respond to Deborah's question about genealogists, I realized that this is some place we all have possibly come to one or more times in our research. This is the point where we have closets full of information and are overwhelmed by it. You look at all that data and say to yourself "OK, now what?" I've been there and am certain that more than a few of you have also. I know what Vanessa and I have done, and know that we are still stumped on some issues, but the ROOTWALKER mail list is not all about us. It is about YOU, and it's about helping each other. With the weekend coming up I thought this would be a good time to ask some of you for your input. Please don't be bashful. The questions I have are simple. What did you do to help overcome the mass of data that you have discovered in your research? How did you organize it into something that makes sense to you and others? What computer programs have you found helpful and what do you like best about them? Thanks to all of you for being the ROOTWALKER family. Sincerely, Stan Magnesen ROOTWALKER site/list coordinator ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    1. [ROOTWALKER] Re: Genealogists
    2. Hello Deborah and everyone else, Vanessa and I have discussed this and really don't personally know any paid genealogists to refer you to. We do realize that some people feel it is necessary to hire someone to give them a hand, and there are some excellent researchers out there awaiting their business, but again, we just don't know anyone personally that we can recommend. I will caution you about hiring researchers that you don't know. Please, please, please communicate with them in extent BEFORE signing on the dotted line. I have talked to a number of what I call "Pay for Play" "genealogists" in our research and while doing research for others. There are many, too many, of these well meaning people that, in my opinion, don't really know what they are doing, taking wild and wide leaps of faith, guessing, and speculating about the family histories of others. I had one person, a late-twentyish lady, tell me that "If somebody wants something, I'LL find it!" Hogwash! If it isn't there, how are you going to find it?.....I can't recommend her, by the way. Well, I believe that's enough negativity on my part! Just be careful about those Con-men and Con-women out there, please. If anyone has knowledge of a paid genealogist that may be able to help Deborah, please contact her off list in order to protect the privacy of the third party or parties. We thank everyone in advance for any helpful information you can send Deborah, and thank all of you for being the ROOTWALKER family. Good Luck! 3. I do not have a clue!!!! I have about 12 huge ring binder note books and about 10 regular size ring binders full of papers and it is still growing. I bought extra note books so I could sort it but that still does not decrease the load. (I also have zippered note books so I don't lose the small papers) Since I had the virus in my computer that wiped out all my files I feel compelled to print it all up. It just continues to grow. If you should hear from someone who knows how to handle it I would sure like to hear it. I can't even figure out how to file the family papers, documents, pictures, clippings so I can cross reference them. I just figured I was the only one not smart enough to figure it out. I , too, would welcome any solution!!! Stan, you must know the answer! Share it with us!!! Give Vanessa a big hug and give her my best wishes. This spring weather will perk her up for sure!!!! Tell her she is in my prayers! June in Indiana

    1. Re: [ROOTWALKER] SATTERFIELD,KNIGHT
    2. Hi Wanda, Could you tell us when Samuel or Reuben SATTERFIELD or Jonathan KNIGHT lived and what time period they could have been in the military service? Do you know if they served in the time of war? Would they have enlisted in Tennessee? Did any of them perish while in the service? Do you happen to have a social security number of them if they lived after Social Security came into being? We really do need more information to be able to help you find any military records of these people. Some records, such as those of the Spanish-American War or the Philippines Insurrection are tough to find, but most, such as the War of Yankee Aggression and the World Wars are much easier to find. I have lots of lists of families of Chisms but I think I need help sorting through it all. I live near a family research center --at a Mormon Church here in Knoxville, Tenn., and have been advised to look into finding information there---so I am going to do that.
