Hello TJ, Union County, Tennessee was formed in 1850 from portions of Grainger, Claiborne, Campbell, Anderson and Knox Counties. Union County was named such because of the strong Unionist beliefs among the citizens of the area. Middle TN Counties--List of Region's Counties</A> , you will find Union County to be #87 in the counties, and it does not touch the state lines of North Carolina or Virginia. Hello Leslie, To my knowledge, there is no web site dedicated entirely to the old Tennessee County of North Carolina. I have a question along the same lines. I have a relative from Union Co. NC, with all the land changing from one state to another could this be modern day Union Co. TN. The era of my query is 1790-95. I have no other info such as township or anything that will give me a specific location. The years 1920-1922 with part of 1923--172 sailings of 66,000 people--can be found at http://db.genealogy.net/maus/gate/shiplists.cgi. The project is a joint effort of the Bremen Chamber of Commerce and a Bremen society for family research called Maus. Eventually the group hopes to put all surviving lists, through 1939, on the Internet. You can search the lists using a surname only or a portion of a surname. The system will then display all persons whose surname has the key letters supplied. Using the surname Weiss, the system displayed all names that had the consecutive characters w-e-i-s-s including Weiss, Schneeweiss, Schweiss, Serweiss, Stirnweiss, Weissenberg, Wessenberger, Weissenborn, Weissenbruch and others. There is no soundex search. Information provided includes name of the person, town of origin, ship, date of departure and name of the ship. The site states that ships left Bremen/Bremerhaven for the United States, Canada and South America. Lists earlier than 1920 were systematically destroyed by officials who ran out of storage space. The surviving lists had been stowed in a salt mine during World War II together with other archival material. After the war they were transferred by the Russians to the Moscow Archives. In 1987 and 1990 the lists were given back to the Bremen Chamber of Commerce.

Don't expect instant access to the site. The opening will be featured on the "Today" show, a popular morning television broadcast in the United States viewed by millions of people. If you try to access the site but cannot get a connection, try between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. U.S. time or wait a few days. It will be located at http://www.ellisisland.org/history.html. In an article in "Family Tree Magazine", a spokesman for the Ellis Island Foundation stated that there is no soundex system but "a computational linguistic search filtering system that is sensitive to ethnic linguistic patterns" is an essential feature of the system. The person claims that in many ways it outdoes a soundex system.

Hi Jeff, Yes, I have a little bit more information on Co. K, 14th Tenn Infantry, CSA. It was organized at Camp Duncan, north of Clarksville, TN, in 1861. The 14th was in Virginia during the entire War. It was with Archer's Brigade, which was under the command of Stonewall Jackson until his death. The 14th penetrated the Union line at Gettysburg. I have heard they were inside the Yankee line as far as 75 yards before being recalled. This was when they were involved in the infamous "Pickett's Charge." Though I haven't verified it, I have heard that they were the only unit to do this. Yankee soldiers, after the war, in interviews, stated that a cold chill went over them when they realized they were facing these Tennesseans. On 12 July, 1861, the regiment left Clarksville en route to Virginia. They had to go through Chattanooga because the rails had been destroyed by the varmint Yankees elsewhere. Later that day, they arrived in Nashville and spent the night at the fairgrounds. On the 13th of July, they were once more loaded on the train and went on to Chattanooga. They left Chattanooga later and went to Knoxville in open rail cars in unseasonably cold weather. >From Knoxville, they went to Haynesville, Tennessee in a terrible rainstorm. Here, apparently, they were used for a short time to guard the railroad until late July. After being relieved of the task of guarding the rails, they went on to Lynchburg, Va, and changed trains to Manassas Junction, Va. The first winter was spent at Cross Roads, Virginia. This is now part of West Virginia. The baptism by fire came at the Battle of Cheat Mountain. This was on September 12, 1861.
