    3. Clay: Yes, I am going to say it like my father in law has said, " it was not a Civil War there was not one thing civil about it." The book is interesting as it is pretty well pinpointed around the Nashville - Chattanooga Railway and this put it in our local communities of Bedford, Marshall, Moore, Lincoln & Coffee County. Seemingly Major General Robert Milroy under the guise of his rank with the US Army, put himself above the law in some instances. On the other hand the Bushwhackers were committing very violent acts on the ones that were in sympathy with the union. The whole area was under control of the Union and there was a lot of pilfering going on. Also there seems to be that scores were settled among neighbors about issues that happened before the conflict under the umbrella of the war without civil penalty. This was a sad time for our people no matter which side they were in sympathy of. I was at a presentation conducted by Dr. George Schweitzer of The East Tennessee Historical Society some months ago. From what he presented the South was trying to make a change [there was an issue of economics to the South], but the powers to be of that time pressed the issue on. I don't want us to fight the conflict again in this forum, but I think it is a good topic for discussion, because so many of our ancestors were affected in so many ways. 3. Tom: Good to hear from you on the list. There was more division in our area than I realized. The prison camps were most inhumane. Our civil liberties of this day would probably have been laughed at from both sides of the conflict. I just read of one story of a Confederate Soldier of the rank of Captain, having a leg amputated and being sent to the Illinois prison within a day or so of the amputation and the medical needs were so primitive. I imagine the pain was almost unbearable, but he lived through it and returned to Bedford County. This happened in The Stones River Battle and of course Shelbyville is within close proximity of Murfreesboro. Upon getting hit and while he was still in the Confederate Camp, he requested of his mother to send his slave if he cared to come. The slave came and provided care for him. The Confederate Hospital was taken over by the Union and this was when he was sent to the prison camp. The slave went on to join the Union Army and became a Sergeant. After the conflict the former slave returned to the plantation and went to work for the Confederate veteran. They are buried side beside in a Bedford County Cemetery. Pleasant Bennett, son of Hezekiah Bennett of Bedford County, also had two brothers and other Bennett & Daniel relatives in Company C, 23rd Battalion, Tennessee Infantry (Newman's), CSA, organized on Thompson Creek in Bedford County. 2. Hi Bobby Prosser: I read somewhere during my KING-CLOUD research, that there were a lot of people in Lincoln Co. TN and in Madison Co. AL areas, that were not in favor of leaving the union. I read where a vote was taken in AL regarding separation from the union and joining the CSA. North Alabama apparently voted to remain in the union, but were out voted by the cotton plantation owners in south Alabama. In addition, I have read about young men in the same family often joining both the Union and CSA forces. My great grandfather John E. Cloud of Madison Co. AL was imprisoned in Nashville, TN as a suspected Confederate spy, near the end of the war. He died in prison just prior to the end of the war. You can read some of the details in my book titled From Wagons To Space Ships. The book is available on microfilm from LDS family history centers and in a few cases, by interlibrary loan. None of the books are available for sale. Tom King, Sr. > >

    3. Julia: Thank you. I appreciate hearing from you I have been seeing the news reports and thinking of you, Betty Flo & Walter. I am going down to the meeting tomorrow about the Lincoln County Heritage book. I was going over some material and I had always took it to mean acreage, then I realized it was probably value. I am trying to put together something on my Prosser family that settled in Moore County for their book. It is hard to tell a lot except that they had 14 children and I suppose it took that many for a hill farm in Moore County. I do not see how in the world those people made it back in those days. I wished we knew more of the history of the area. I read Dr. Bradley's book "FIRE AND BLOOD" and it was interesting. Needless to say our Ridge area was close to an area where the people were being harassed in one way or another. Of course my original Prosser family was dead by the time the war occurred, but some of the children served in the war. I did not realize that there was as much division among the people with their loyalties until I read it. Seemingly, Shelbyville and Bedford County were pretty divided. 2. Bobby, I have seen yours and John Fosters post on these two. I have not run across them but on the 1790 Abbeville, SC census is a Ambrose 2 free white males of 16 years and upwards, including heads of families; 3 free white males under 16 years; 2 free white females including heads of families. Next names is Joel Foster 1-0-1 In the Pendleton district where my Armstrong's are from there are James Foster 3-0- 3; Thomas Foster 1-0-1, one slave. Then in the Newberry, SC is Joel Foster 1-1-1 and 3 slaves. Might settled in another CO. in TN. Julia

    1. [TN-CHESTNUTRIDGECOUSINS] JOHN ARMSTRONG b. 1784, d. 1847 LCT
    2. ARMSTRONG and KING researchers need your help! John ARMSTRONG, son of Thomas and Mary "Mollie" BROWN in his will he gives everything to his son Josiah R. and ------"That he provide for the Support and comfort of his mother during her natural life and also to Support and raise my four Grand children that is to Say, John Wesley ARMSTRONG, Jasper Newton ARMSTRONG, George Higgins and Sarah Jane ARMSTRONG". 1. Everyone has these "Grand Children" as his and Sarah Frances KING'S children not grand children. 2. Why was ARMSTRONG not written in after George Higgins name like all of the other children? 3. Notes I found in Ruth MORGAN research has: "John ARMSTRONG m. Mary Delia KING, then list these children; John Wesley, Jasper Newton, George Higgin, Sarah Jane, Juliann, Margaret, Thomas "Hi" Josiah and David. This are all of the names of John and Sarah KING'S children except she has Juliann and I have Mary Ann and she has all of the respective spouses as I have. She questions her notes "son of John and Sallie KING ARMSTRONG, did he marry twice"? 4. I do not have a spouse for George Higgin ARMSTRONG. Could he have been George (surname) HIGGIN? There was a George HIGGIN married to Sarah L. STONE 11-July-1850, this does not sound likely. Also there was a write up on John ARMSTRONG, son of Thomas and Mary BROWN ARMSTRONG, in the Petersburg Homecoming 1986 publication. It states:"John ARMSTRONG was an entry officer of claims for the western North Carolina lands", While there was a John ARMSTRONG brother to Martin ARMSTRONG, both of who were surveyers and were entry officers of claims. They both gave themselves 5000 acre grants in Lincoln CO. and Giles CO. and perhaps more. This John ARMSTRONG was not our John, was he? I have not found out what happen to this John but his brother Martin's people went on to Ohio or ILL. VICKY MOORE, you said there was a write up on John ARMSTRONG in Goodspeed can you give me some of the details? Can anyone shed any light on the above????? Julia

    1. [TN-CHESTNUTRIDGECOUSINS] HISTORY OF THE FOUR COUNTY AREA
    2. Prosser Genealogy - Comcast
    3. CRC LIST: From: A Quote Out of Counties of Tennessee Moses Crawford was one of the first settlers of the Moore County area. In the early days there was a den of thieves and "stealing was as common as going to church." There was a vigilance committee that maintained law and order. Punishment was at the whipping post. There was a small, weakly man by the name of Lynch, living in the area and he was called on to administer the punishment and in time the place became known as Lynchburg and by tradition this has been passed down as the way that the town received its name.
