    1. Re: [TN-CHESTNUTRIDGECOUSINS] LOCATED ONE OF MY OLD LOST CEMETERIES
    2. Ellen Norris
    3. Bobby, I am sure you were thrilled to find the cemetery, yet probably a bit sad to find it in in need of such care. If you browse the Johnston cemetery again, please look for my Joel/Joe/James Ambrose Norris who was shot and killed in 1849. We just may find out one day that he is connected to Orphia afterall. No, I never found out any more about Orphia, even after enlisting Margaret Shutt's help. You and I have corresponded several times over the past 3+ years. My Norris has no apparent connection to Ezekiel either. I did find that my Norris went to Lincoln County, TN probably around 1833 from Wilkes/Ashe Co., NC and that he was distantly related to those Norrises in White Co., TN as well. Can't remember if you ever looked into those White Co., TN Norrises, but they were quite elusive - no apparent connection to Ezekiel with them either. So, if you haven't done so, look at Wilkes/Ashe counties, NC and/or White Co., TN. Don't look too far at those Norrises in Fentress Co, TN - those are mine and I think have already looked for Orphia there. There were some Norrises in Cocke Co., TN as well - can't remember if I had a connect with them or not. The key to finding out more about Orphia might be through her siblings, but if I recall, I don't believe you had any of that info. Keep digging! I am still trying to find out if you and I connect on through the Paynes. Our Paynes were Quakers too. Did you ever find any more on the ancestors of your Elizabeth Payne who married Jesse Brown in 1801? If you run into any more locals, ask about my dearly departed. He was on the Mortality Index attached to the 1850 Lincoln Co., TN census (Chestnut Ridge area) - showing he was shot and killed in October of 1849 (as if anyone on this list needs to be reminded - I have only posted this about 100 times). Oh well, just keep my inquiry a permanent member of the brick wall list at your reunions. Thanks! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Prosser Genealogy - Comcast" <prossergenealogy@comcast.net> To: <TN-CHESTNUTRIDGECOUSINS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 13, 2004 8:41 AM Subject: [TN-CHESTNUTRIDGECOUSINS] LOCATED ONE OF MY OLD LOST CEMETERIES > I finally located the Howel JOHNSTON cemetery yesterday and I was delighted. 3. Cousins: The Moore County Heritage Book is in the process of being put together for publication. I have submitted an article to them about our Chestnut Ridge Cousin organization. I have also submitted an article about our pioneer Prosser Family. Moore County is a small county in area and population. Many of our Chestnut Ridge roots were from this county. It is not to late to submit family information to the committee for publication. They are needing to sell 350 books and at this time they have just around 125 to 130 odd book orders. If you can help these people out, please do so. We will be having our next cousins meeting there [Lynchburg / County Seat] June 11 & June 12. I am getting feedback from their local people that they are interested in our organization. We are still in the process of putting together our program for the meeting. At this time we have two committed speakers. Dr. Patricia West [one of our cousins] will be speaking to us. You may view her web site at: www.websitewiz.com. Among the surnames that she has ties to us are: KING, HARKINS, SORRELLS, SMITH, ROBERTS lines. We have also ask Mr. Russell O'Neal to speak to us. Mr. O'Neal was past president of the Lincoln County Genealogical Society and he has some knowledge of the settling of "The Ridge". We have also discussed putting together some type of individual family displays for each to visit. We urge your support and suggestions in our endeavors. Let us get excited about the June event. If I can get out of the house today I plan to go down to Lynchburg and do some scouting. 2. Sherry, I found the 1860 census record of the James Brent that I wrote about earlier and he was 60 years old at the time the census was taken. That would make him born in or around 1800, and it showed his state of birth as North Carolina, and his occupation as a farmer. This was in District 11, Petersburg area. I think they may have been living on farm that his wife Stacy inherited from her first husband, James Ellis. Joyce Park Riggs

    3. I do not know if this is the James Brents that you are looking for, if not disregard. This is from the biography of Dr. T. W. Brents that I have. Thomas Brents, Sr. 1775-1837, wife Margurett McQuirter {McWhorter} had the following children : Alpheus; William; James, wife Rhoda Davis Cowden; Elizabeth, husband, Steven Talley; Mary Lucinda, husband, Hill; Jane, husband, Fleming; Matilda, husband, Brooks; and Thomas Wesley {Thomas Wesley, was Dr. T. W. Brents}. Thomas Wesley Brents Sr. and Margaret {Jane} McWhorter were born in Kentucky. Dr. T. W. Brents was born in Marshall County. His son Dr. T. E. Brents md. Orphia Prosser my great aunt. This family descends from Hugh Brents, 1642 of England > Virginia > Kentucky > Tennessee. I found the abandoned cemetery where Thomas Brents and Jane McWhorter are buried in the Talley Station Community within 1 mile of the farm that my great grandfather Jonathan Prosser had. Tom Brents that lives in Fort Worth is a descendant. Mr. Hulen Horton from Quitman, TX. that attended our 1st Chestnut Ridge Cousins reunion has done a lot of research on this family. Mrs. Horton now deceased was also a descendant. 2. Sherry, Thanks for your reply to my post about the Brents cemetery marker. I should have done my homework a little better. In doing all the many searches for this James Brent that is my mystery man I have run across this James Monroe Brents and Rhoda a number of times. I should have looked before I wrote that post. However, maybe someone will pick up on it and send something about the man I can't find. I have corresponded with you briefly before. There are several family connections posted on your web pages that are connected in some way with my family. Do they call it collateral lines? I am sort of a novice at all this. Also, I have enjoyed reading all the posts about the CHESTNUT RIDGE COUSINS activities. Carolyn Crowley is one of my new friends that I have made in my genealogy pursuits. We have met and she keeps me informed about a lot of new of Lincoln County. I never lived there but my father was from there and I was lucky enough to have made many, many trips to Fayetteville as a girl and then as an adult until about 1980. I have been back a few times since I have been on this genealogy jag and hope to go again. My Brent is James Brent who married Martia Stacy Douthit Ellis in 1854. They were living in the Petersburg area in the 1860 Census. I have searched for them in the 1880 Census and cannot find either but Stacy was still alive as I have seen her tombstone in the Buchanan Cemetery. I also have a Mary (Polly) Brents who married James Clift. They were my gr gr grandparents and were living in Lincoln County in th 1850 Census and possibly 1860. They were both born in early 1800--about 1805-1810 from ages shown on census. I have seen a Civil War Pension application for one of their sons and he shows his mother as Brents b. NC. I know that she must have been related in some way to some of the other more well known Brents in Lincoln and Marshall Counties around the same time frame, but just cannot find out the connection. I am also up a tree with her husband, James Clift, even though there were a number of Clift people in the area during the 1800s. I know several other people who are also looking for these Brent/s with no luck. You seem to have the most information on Brents of anyone that I have seen. Maybe one of these days some new person will see one of these posts and join in with some new information. Thanks for your reply and keep me posted if anything seems to fit. Joyce Park Riggs
