He is buried at the Hastings Campground Cemetery with a soldier of the American Revolution marker. I am a descendant of him. 2. Joseph GREER - Buried in Greer Cemetery west of Hannah Gap in Lincoln County. He carried the Message of victory from King's Mountain to the Continental Congress at Philadelphia. There are ties to his family to many of the area. 3. John MEDEARIS - Buried in Medearis Cemetery in Marshall County. He settled the area in Southeastern Marshall County, east of Belfast known as Liberty Valley. There is a Revolutionary Soldier marker at his grave. 4. Peter LUNA - Buried in Luna Cemetery. There is a DAR marker at the grave. He is connected to many of us through his family. 5. William JORDAN - Buried in Williamson County. My wife is a descendant of him. Mr. George: Good to hear from you! Although I have not had the time to read all of the material that is on the web site at: http://www.yoogee.com/search/?It=14&q=early+looneys+in+america&cls=wsi12&rid=r01 compiled by Leroy W. Tilton, there is mention of the area in upper East Tennessee that Carolyn was suggesting of the other night. There is also mention of the LOONEY / LUNA families up in Sumner County and one of the families that was with them up there was the BLEDSOE family. I have often heard of Bledsoe Creek up there (Sumner County), but this made me wonder if there was a connection to the BLEDSOE family of Northern Lincoln and / or Southern Bedford County. I believe the early LUNA family of Southern Middle Tennessee was connected to the Sumner County clan although I have not had the time to give study to it. Another name that is from "The Ridge" area mentioned is LOGAN. In the brief look I do see connections on page 6 and 7 of part 6 Peter Looney branch. And quoting from that material it reads: The all- important record evidence in distinguishing the Peter Looneys of Sumner County, Tennessee, is found in the pension application papers of Peter Luna of Lincoln County, Tennessee, dated 16 Oct 1832, 20 Sep 1833 and of Marshall County, 16 Jan 1846. He declares: "I was born in Botetourt County in Virginia on the first day of October 1760 according to information derived from my mother, but I have no record of my age." He was in the battle of Long Island of Holston before he enlisted under Captain Wm. Coke. He "volunteered at Long Island of Holstoun in the state of Virginia" for six months. "When he entered the service he lived about fifteen miles above the Long Islands on Houlston River." He was a frontier guard during treaty time and was stationed at Long Island until sometime after the treaty. He was discharged in 1778 or at least in the year of conclusion of the treaty at the Long Island of Holston. He acted as a scouting party and was not in regular service until 1779 when he was called into service in Captain Anderson's Company for one month to guard Blackmore's Station. He served under Captain Isaac Bledsoe and Colonel Russell. After this time he " went to Cumberland River and arrived at the place where Nashville stands two days before Christmas, 1779, and has lived in the counties of Davidson, Sumner and Lincoln ever since." He volunteered and "went from Cumberland to Kentucky in the year 1782 as well as he recollects" --- and served 14 or 21 days under Colonel Logan against the Indians at Blue Lick. George Blackmore of Lincoln County (1832) certified that Blackmore's Station on Clinch River was built and kept by, and named after, his father, John Blackmore. George was a drummer when Peter Luna was there and they both came to Cumberland in the same year and lived as neighbors ever since, with few exceptions. All of this looks interesting and I hope I have the time to sit down and study all of it. This might not help much but I found an obituary for Col. Robert Fain Looney 38th TN Regt who died 18 Nov 1899 in Memphis aged 75. He was born in Maury Co TN. "Col. Looney was of Irish ancestry. His great-grandfather, David Looney, located in Maryland, and afterwards in Virginia, and then came to Tennessee. He was one of the framers of the constitution of the last-named state. Speaking of Willis Hopwood Foster, I wonder where the name Hopwood came from. I know of three members of the Foster family that had Hopwood for their middle name. Does anyone know anything about Perry Green? Several of the Freeman descendants had that name. Perry Green Freeman, Perry Green Steelman etc. John
Willis Hopwood Foster JP is my great uncle, Julia. He was JP for a long time. He was a War of Yankee Aggression veteran and said he never signed an oath of allegiance. Wonder how he was able to hold public office? He and uncles Peter, Joel, Briggs Nichols and Isaac Morton were all in the hard luck 41st infantry. John
My grandparents James Franklin Wright and Willie Etta Armstrong were married by W. H ? Foster J.P. on 26-Dec.1883 Do you know who that is cousin John? Is that one of your Fosters? I am not sure if it is W. H Foster or not. The ink is smeared on the marriage license. cousin Julia
My grandparents James Franklin WRIGHT and Willie Etta ARMSTRONG marriage license is dated 26-December-1883 as is the marriage bond. J. P. WAKEFIELD signed their marriage bond. I have found both J. P. WAKEFIELD and James F. WRIGHT paying property taxes in the 8th district of Lincoln CO. the year of 1892. I cannot find either of them in that district on the 1900 census. This could be because the census is in such poor condition. Does anyone know who J. P. WAKEFIELD that lived in that time period is? Julia
Marshall County is in the four county area of our Chestnut Ridge Cousin research. The area that most of us are interested in was a part of Lincoln County prior to Marshall County being formed. If I remember correctly Marshall County was formed in 1832. Fishing Ford Road was an old trail from Nashville to Huntsville and then on to New Orleans. It was used as a trail to move slaves and then sometimes it was used to drive hogs to New Orleans. One of the most historical points of interest about this trail is that Andrew Jackson used this trail on his way to Alabama to war with the Creek Indians. He camped with his army at Glenn or Spout Spring about one half mile from Old Belfast. Today there are a number of cemeteries on the Old Fishing Ford Road where we have many family members buried. Among them are Head Springs, New Hope, Brooks and of course the Old Peter Luna Cemetery. Also on this road was located the McAdams Cemetery that was destroyed by a land owner that was also connected to this family. Not far east of the road is the Brents Cemetery where the original Brents settler of the area is buried. Bobby Prosser prossergenealogy@comcast.net
Bobby-- My knowledge of Tennessee history is very rusty, but you can check out http://www.tngenweb.org/sullivan/ for information. I think you will be able to find the answers to your questions in links on this page. Thank you Bobby for mentioning the recipes. Along in that vain I would like to let all know that could not attend the meetings in Lynchburg that we are going to try and get a newsletter out in September to all members. Those that are not on line we will mail the newsletter to them. I would like to ask all for help by sending in articles on families past as well as present. We would like to include things like. Recipes as Bobby mentioned. We may get enought that we could put out a book. Do you have a loved one in the armed services? We would all like to know about our men and women in uniform that have a connection to our group. How about the crazy cousin, living or not, that could touch his ear with his tongue or caught the largest fish, even if it is a fish story. How about an embarrassing moment. I will tell one on me if others will send in theirs. We need tips. Now you men what great tips do you have as to fixing, taking care of tools, gardening, the car or anything. We all can learn something new. Ladies we need your tips as well. New as well as the pioneer ones. Are there stories handed down in the family, true, not so true or a little embellish? Tell us about where you live, where you would like to live. I know all would like to know about those in college, or that Suzy earned her Girl Scout badge, Jimmy received his high school letter. Take this opportunity to brag about the family. Who of your ancestors would you most like to spend a day with. For that matter what living person would you like to spend a day with. How is that move coming along or the addition to the house? Last December or was it the December before many of us wrote in their Christmas memories. We need more stories like those. I for one would like to learn more about the other counties. I have learned a lot about Lincoln but how about Marshall, Bedford and Moore counties, all of the little town and burgs. I think you get the picture. We need all of your input in the newsletter. Let us use it to get better aquatinted with one another as well as exchanging information on those that went before us. What do you all think should be included in the newsletter? Let me know as I am working on it now. There was a newsletter program that came with my computer. Have never used it. It is going to take me from now until Sept. to learn what I can do with it. I am a computer "Dummy". If you have something for me to put in the newsletter send it to me personally, not by way of the mailing list. If you do not want to send me an email then send it by snail mail. Get in touch with me and I will send you my home address. Lets make this newsletter informative and fun by all participating in it. Cousin Julia
Thanks Carolyn: I see Long Island in the area. Would this have been the name of an early county? Of course Tennessee did not become a state until 1796. So I guess he settled in that community up there. Was not Tennessee the county of Washington, NC at this time? Bobby-- Take a look at this website on Jefferson County Genealogy and History: http://www.tnhillbillie.net/tn/jefferson/maps/topography.html and see information that gives the location of Long Island as being what is now Kingsport, in Sullivan County, TN--way up there close to the Virginia line. Hello Bobby, No, I'm sorry. I don't have any information on Mary "Polly" SIMS. I have a Nancy G SORRELLS married to John G FERGUSON. Martha Jane KING was married to my paternal 2nd great grandfather, Benjamin Hicks WHITFIELD. I can skirt around the surnames you mentioned, but not connect. I'll refer this to my cousin, Alice that may have more information than myself. Hopefully, she can help you. Cousins: I have had several computer problems recently and that is the reason you have not heard from me. It was good to see each of you in Lynchburg. I enjoyed our speakers and it was especially nice to have Cheryl Henderson to speak to us about Tennessee's First Families. It is especially good to see a name that you connect to [through my wife's family] among these families. I was also focused in on Peter Looney, then I realized that it was Peter Looney from Sumner County. I do believe though that our Peter Luna was in Sumner County before moving to the Cane Creek area. I appreciate Julia being willing to work on the newsletter. We have so many cousins that are not online and they desire some type of newsletter and this is understandable. This is very much needed. I believe that Betty Flo has also suggested that she would help Julia. Polly has sent me the financial report. I am having difficulty getting it open. I hope to have it open before the day is out and then I will discuss with Sherry how we should present it. Mr. Jack Towry and I intend on getting together to pursue some work on the cemetery project. I liked the idea of having tables set up for display. I agree that maybe we need to streamline the business session, maybe with the officers coming in and meeting earlier and having all our "ducks in a row". After Polly's sister became ill, she ask me and Mr. Bradley to look around the Lewisburg area for the 2005 meeting. I have made some calls to the local motels in the area. There is a good possibility that "The Walking Horse Inn" would be available to us. They do have a conference room and their room rates are reasonable. Hopefully I can get down there within the next week or so and do some hands on scouting. I have had discussion with Donna about this and I will get back with her after the trip down there. Due to some other pressing things that have been thrown on me it will have to come at a time that I can work out. I appreciate all of your involvement and I hope we can get this list active. I belong to several list and I see many of you on those list. It was suggested that maybe you could Cc. your post to this list.
