Dear Cousins: I am trying to gather articles for our newsletter. I do not believe I can get one out before the first of Oct. as I am having company most of the month of Sept but I have been able to get a couple of cousins to commit to sending in articles and have one already. I have written a couple myself. But do not let this newsletter be all about me. I want all of you to write a couple of paragraphs about your life. Where you were born, parents, spouse, children etc. I will put one or two depending on the space in each newsletter. This is to reacquaint ourselves with one another and to introduce each member to our new and prospective members. So get started on it for when I call upon you, you will have it all done. Will only ask for one per family. I am going to send a copy of the newsletter to all Genealogy, and History Societies in the Middle, TN area and others that the members think are important. Let us have a discussion of this. Does anyone have suggestions on who and or what should have a copy of each issue. Those of you in TN would know more about that than I do. Now I know that many of you have good old southern recipes and helpful hints, send them in. I need volunteers to write an articles about the following, 1. Mrs. BoBo Boarding House and our lunch there. 2. The town of Lynchburg, if anyone visited the court house or any of it's historical buildings that would make a good article. 3. Old family stories, like the ones some of us posted a couple years ago about our childhood Christmas. Or did your family do something special for birthdays. This issue will come out in the fall. Do you have any special outings, remembrances of those shorting, crisp days. What about Thanksgiving? 4. How about that favorite relative or not so favorite. Do we have some real eccentric or murderers in our family tree that are so far in the past that we do not mind sharing the stories? I have two murderers in my family and one of them is the progenitor of all of the Kentucky Brantley family (my mothers side). These stories do not have to be just about Chestnut Ridge. Have you taken some wonderful trips. They could be across the globe or around the corner. 5. Tell us about your children, what are they doing in school. The awards, hobbies and challenges. 6. Queries, this is going out to others that are not on line or have a computer. Someone out there may have the answer. This newsletter is about we cousins, not only our ancestors but our life in the past, now and in the future. Our interest, family, life, or any of those above. If I do not hear from you, you can be sure that in the future you will hear from me personally. So get those thinking hats on. Julia
An article in today's Nashville Tennessean tells about a cemetery restoration workshop to be held at Greenwood Cemetery in Columbia, TN. You can see the article at http://cgi.tennessean.com/cgi-bin/print/pr.pl --and I've also copied it (see below). Carolyn Whitaker Crowley = = = = = = = = = = Nashville Tennessean Monday, 08/09/04 Archaeologist to show 'right way' to restore cemeteries By SUE McCLURE Staff Writer COLUMBIA - It may be the most unusual series of free workshops to be offered this year: cemetery and gravesite restoration. But, hey, if you've got a family cemetery that needs repairs or tombs that have tumbled, here's your chance to get tips from an expert. Archaeologist and conservator Dan Sumner Allen IV, who travels the state fixing grave markers, headstones, monuments and more, is offering the workshops at Greenwood Cemetery in Columbia, which he has spent the past year restoring. The workshops, which will be 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 14, Aug. 28, Sept. 11 and Sept. 25, are intended to raise public awareness about the importance of properly preserving age-old monuments and markers. ''I try to stress that these cemeteries are very important cultural and historical resources, and we're supposed to be their guardians,'' Allen said. ''And there's a right way to do things and a wrong way.'' Just as you wouldn't take a bucket of bleach to refinish your grandmother's dresser or wardrobe, neither would you use bleach or Portland cement to clean and repair graves, Allen said. ''The golden rule of historic preservation is 'Don't do anything you can't undo,' '' he said. Allen will give workshop participants a hands-on lesson in restoring and conserving cemeteries, including information on how to conduct historical research on those buried in the cemetery. ''Most of the people who come to my workshops have little family cemeteries on their farms,'' he said. ''They want to learn what to do.'' In addition to crisscrossing the state repairing cemeteries, Allen is also trying to raise public awareness. ''I'm starting to look at myself as the Johnny Appleseed of cemeteries,'' Allen said with a chuckle. And indeed, everywhere that Allen goes, cemeteries seem to follow. Take a recent family camping trip. ''I was coming out of the bathroom and walking back to our campsite, when I noticed that there was a cemetery in the middle of the campgrounds,'' Allen said. ''Of course, there were no camping places right where the graves were. ''And the park ranger probably didn't want me making too much noise about it,'' he added. Getting there Archaeologist and conservator Dan Sumner Allen IV's series of free cemetery and gravesite restoration and conservation workshops will be 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 14, Aug. 28, Sept. 11 and Sept. 25 in Greenwood Cemetery on Garden Street in Columbia. Allen recommends that you bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, gloves, water and work shoes. Sue McClure can be reached at 931-486-3611 or smcclure@tennessean.com.

Joseph McAdams was born on April 3, 1761 in Orange County, North Carolina. He married Margaret Whitsett (1764-1844) on January 2, 1782 in Orange County. At the time of the Revolutionary War, Joseph was living in Orange County. He served in Captain James Carrington's Company in the regiment commanded by Colonel Hugh Tinnon/Tinnen/Tinner. His second and third tours of duty were under Captain George H. Hodge. (Data from Pension file #R6579) Around 1804-5, Joseph and his two oldest sons, James and Irwin, moved to an uninhabited area in southern Tennessee that was referred to as the Indian Lands. They were the first white settlers on their 600 acres of land which was next to Cane Creek between Elk Ridge and Mt. Zion, and about 2.7 miles south of where Belfast is now located. The 600 acres straddled historic Fishing Ford Road and is located in what is now Marshall County. The rest of the family moved to Tennessee a year or two later. Joseph died on May 18, 1823 and Margaret died on August 1, 1844. They were buried in the McAdams family cemetery on the McAdams land. Unfortunately, the tombstones of the cemetery were bulldozed by Maggie Blanche (Petty) Campbell about 50 years ago to clear the land. The cemetery area is now a hayfield and according to the laws of the state of Tennessee, will remain such. Let me add to Bobby's list. (1)John G. Glidewell came to the Ridge probably with his son Thomas H. Glidewell in the early 1820s. He is probably buried in the Phillips cemetery on the Ridge. (2)Jacob Bledsoe came to Bedford county ca 1830 and settled in the Sims Spring area near some of his children who had came earlier. He is buried in the area but his grave has been lost. John

Bobby, I will send you information on Joseph McAdams in a few days. He is one of my ancestors who fought in the American Revolutionary War. Why hasn't the Marshall County DAR placed markers at all the graves of the Revolutionary War Veterans? I do not believe they know where many Veterans are buried because they have not attempted to locate their graves. Is the Marshall County DAR a Patriotic Club or just a Social Club who could care less where their ancestors are buried?
