Julia: Yes, I do have ARMSTRONG ancestors. My ARMSTRONG connection is through Mary Jane ARMSTRONG that married Joel Lewis FOSTER. John FOSTER had sent to me that Mary Jane ARMSTRONG was the daughter of William ARMSTRONG and Margaret WOOD / WOODS out of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Am I correct that our FOSTER family came out of South Carolina to Lincoln County, TN.? I believe that my NORRIS and JOHNSTON families came out of Edgefield and Aiken Counties of South Carolina. There is a community named Johnston in Edgefield County and I have looked at some information about the Johnston Cemetery there. I have also seen post about FOSTER families in the area. Was there a migration pattern from South Carolina to "The Ridge"? Julia: I am not as familiar with my FOSTER linage as I would like to be. I thought that maybe my line stayed in "The Ridge" area around Foster Hollow. My grandmother was Ola FOSTER that married Robert Alpine WHORLEY her parents John R. FOSTER and Tempie Ann MOORE passed away when Ola [Ma Whorley] was young. Ma was raised by a BURNS family that is linked to CRC cousin, Jean Cosby. There is a lot that I am in the dark about in Ma's family. I believe that the MOORE line may be connected to your John HARKINS MOORE in some way, but I do not know. Thank you for any information that you may be able to share. John and Bobby: I have found the tree of James Armstrong that you John sent to me. I had misfiled it. So I see that Mary Jane Armstrong Foster and Joel Louis Foster migrated to AL. Their son Ambrose went to TX. I sould not try to remember things off the top of my head. Are you familiar with the two vol.s of "Old Northwest Texas"? Seems there is some info in there on Ambrose Foster and Armstrong's. I have not seen the books but have been told about them from a fellow Wright researcher. Julia
John and Bobby: Did you Mary Jane Armstrong Foster and Joel Foster migrate to TX.? Julia

The year 1816 was a year of no summer. There were massive crop failures worldwide. It was the "poverty year". It is believed that there were over 1800 individuals that froze to death that year. As far south as Savannah, GA. it was 46 degrees on the 4th of July. Our ancestors would have just settled in the area a few short years before. Has anyone heard of any stories about how they may have handled the hardships of that terrible year. There were no chain superstores to go and get your staples. You depended on the land for your livelihood. I know that my BAGLEY family was in the four county area by 1807 and I was wondering if anyone may know of local accounts about our pioneer families that were settling in the area at that time. Julia: Yes, I am enjoying the Moore County book also. My book was sent to my father in law in Shelbyville to hold for me until I could pick it up. With his keen interest in local history and being the county historian of Bedford County for several years, I practically had to pry it out of his hands<grin>. With the many articles that have been submitted to the book project there, I am seeing more cousins in the area each time I open it up. I also will be glad to see the Lincoln County publication. Polly called me yesterday and said that there had been a lot of old records located in the Moore County Courthouse that need to be salvaged and she stated that there were many references to the PROSSER family and many others. She has started and endeavor to save them and it may mean that some funds will have to be raised, so we will all have to join in with her on this endeavor. I am awaiting for more word from her. I keep seeing your post in Lincoln and Bedford Counties on the MOORE family of "The Ridge area", I wished we could get some questions answered about our James MOORE that married Frances UNKNOWN and they were the parents of Tempie Ann MOORE, my great grandmother. At one time John thought she was possibly Frances BLEDSOE. I did find J. H. MOORE and wife Frances buried in Moore's Chapel Cemetery in Bedford County on "The Ridge" across from Foster Hollow. They are of the same time frame as my people, and they were buried among the BLEDSOE family in the cemetery, but not anything has been found to prove this. I look forward to seeing you in June and please put all the reminders out there that you can about this years meeting. Our June meeting is quickly approaching us. I am in the process of working up a press release for the four county newspapers. We have three excellent speakers lined up for the program. Among our speakers is Don Jeter of Lewisburg. Don has done a vast amount of research of the area. Don's forte is land grants and he has been ask to share with us about that subject. In the winter 1975 copy of The Marshall County Historical Quarterly, Vol. V, no. IV are land grants that are in the Petersburg area. Among the areas that are mentioned are the Foster Hollow, Hannah Gap Branch, Cane Creek [East Fork], Chestnut Ridge Road, Petersburg and many more. Many of the old surnames that we have links to are mentioned. If Don still has enough copies it would be worthwhile for each cousin to purchase a copy. Folks this is our area that Don has researched so I think that we are all in for a treat. Also speaking will be Paulette Carpenter of the Marshall and Maury County TNGenWeb program. Paulett! e tells me after looking closely at the Chestnut Ridge map she has many roots that go back to the area. She is an archivist with Tennessee State Archives GenWeb. Don Mills with Walsworth Publishing Co. will share the work that is in process on the Lincoln Moore, Giles and Coffee County Family History Books. I know that we all have a lot on our plate, but let's get busy promoting our meeting. Remember that May 10 is the cutoff date for registrations at Henry Horton State Park. We hope to see you in June.
