I don`t know the phrase "gave up".:-) This is what I know; Samuel RANKINS age 21(y.o.b.1873) marriage #1 Fannie COOPER daughter of Isaac COOPER in Obion Co. TN. 01, Nov. 1894.. 1910 census Samuel is in Lauderdale Co. TN. age 40(y.o.b.1870) wife Fannie and 5 children said he was born in KY. In 1920 the younger two children, dau. Blanche L. RANKIN born in 1907 and son Virgil RANKINS born after the census in 1910, are with COOPER relatives in Tipton Co. TN. this census has their father (Samuel) born KY.. Can`t seem to find Samuel RANKINS, Fannie RANKINS or the other (Nannie, Jessie, Flora, and Lea) 4 children in 1920. In 1930 Samuel is in Coldwater, Cross Co. AR. age 53(y.o.b. 1877) born KY. he is with wife #2 Lula May (FENNEL) and children Irene (my mother) and Carl. Samuel states first married at age 21. No death certificate has been found for Samuel his 1st. wife or their 4 remaining children. Can`t find a certificate of marriage for Samuel RANKINS and Lula May FENNEL in Arkansas. With the different birth years for Samuel it is next to impossible to identify him with parents on the 1880 census. There were many Sam/Samuel and S. RANKIN/RANKINS in that age bracket. Most RANKINS spell it with the S some with out. Samuel always spelt it with the S. It was said that Samuel RANKINS had a brother Charles and a sister Elizabeth she was said to have married a Mr. BUNCH. I have found no leads on these two either. Glenda, Well unfortunately sometimes I do have to give up. Couple of points though. I never could find a Fannie as a daughter of Isaac Cooper. I did see a Francis in Weakley county whose father was Isaac. You said that Fannie was Samuel's first wife. According to the 1910 census, she was his second wife. I see a death record listed for Jessie Rankins in Lauderdale co in 1915. Death was 8/18/1915 - vol 29, page 325. I don't know exactly what the vol and page # refer to. This came from the death index at the Tennessee State Library & Archives website. All the older girls are probably married by 1920.
