    3. Barbara, thanks for your efforts in setting this up. I've added the following to the functionality list 18. Flags -- Flags have multiple uses. They can be used as status flags to indicate what step of a project you are on. They can be used to categorize people for reporting. They can be used as alerts to quickly tell you something about this person. Ability to create unlimited number of flags Ability to create multiple settings for each flag. Ability to set a default value for a flag. Ability to automatically add flags to new people being added. 19. Alternate names -- People, especially women, go by various names during their life time. It's important to document all those names and to be able to identify which name is relevant for each tag. Ability to add unlimited alternate names Ability to list the name chronologically with other tags Ability to link a name other than the primary name to each tag. Ability to incorporate the selected alternate name into the sentence structure for that tag. 20. Variables in Sentence templates -- When building a sentence template it is important to be able to add multiple variables into the sentence structure. TMG does this with split memos, but multiple memo fields that could be used in the sentence would work also. Exhibits -- Adding exhibits enhances our story. Pictures of our ancestors bring them to life. Scans of sources make them easily retrievable. Ability to add exhibits to person, event, citation, source, or place. 3. We have talked about many functionalities that are important to one or another of us as we look at alternatives to TMG. I took the liberty of compiling a list of basic functionalities that are important to me, things that already appear on the website, and things that have been mentioned on TMG-REFUGEES. The list appears on the website at Software‎ > ‎Software Comparison‎ > ‎Functionalities. Compiling the list was a very useful exercise for me because it helped me to review and focus on my own priorities as I evaluate alternative software. It reminds me how difficult the transition we are facing will be over the next months and years, but it also reminds me how valuable it is to have like-minded people discussing the same issues I am thinking about! What functionalities are important to you and why? Barbara L. -- Barbara Levergood levergood@att.net

    3. Good list. I'd add: The ability to produce standard professional looking journal reports and other common narrative reports. Options to customize narrative reports including selection of people, selection of included event types, good choice of journal or report styles, choice of having BMDB paragraph or not, ability to exclude people or to include "private" or excluded people, The inclusion of all selected events for an inividual with options of either chronological order or as reordered by the user. (The division of events into individual and couple paragraphs is unacceptable to me.) Writing is not my forte, but that should give some of you ideas. 2. Julie Rosales via
    3. Hello all! I've been using TMG since version 5 I think and have taken advantage of Flags, Ship people, roles and extensive customization of sentences for reports/narratives. Like others on this list, I have not abandoned TMG... but am practical in the knowledge that as operating systems change, someday TMG will not run on my PCs... so I need to be aware of other programs that are out there. That's something I haven't done since starting to use TMG back in the 90s! My practical self also says that it will take work (read editing) and alot of data handling choices to re-adapt my research to another program. Combined with the fact that I'm not retirement age for awhile... this all translates into "this will be a slow process". Combine this with the fact that I have new data to enter... I will have to make choices. I look forward to reading comments and ideas on this list... Julie

    1. [TMG-REFUGEES] import of Name-Var without a surname
    2. Barbara Levergood via
    3. I just noticed a problem in how TMG Name-Var imports into Legacy and RootsMagic via GEDCOM. For example, for Samuel Hubbard Levegood, his primary name in TMG is: Given Name=Samuel Hubbard Surname=Levegood But, he went by "Hubbard", so I also gave him the tag Name-Var, GivenName=Hubbard, without entering the surname. That works in TMG, because, as Terry Reigel says, "if you leave the given name or surname field blank in a non-primary name tag, the tag will pick up ("infer") the missing given name or surname from the primary name tags."[1] However, Legacy doesn't seem to make that inference. "Hubbard" appears in Legacy as an alternate name (without the surname), but in the Index and in the Name List, there is no entry of the form: Levegood, Hubbard. However, there is one in the index for "~, Hubbard" and in the Name List for "~ Hubbard" (the tilde signals that it is an alternate name) . To find empty Alt. Surnames in Legacy: Find/Detailed Search Tab Look for Whom? Individual Where to Look? Alt. Surname How to Look? Equal to What to look for? <BLANK> The RM import is similar to Legacy's. To find empty alternate surnames in RM: Search/Person List/Find/Surname/is blank. Make sure "Show alternate names in list" is checked. Alternate names appear with "+" to the left. I will wait for the direct import options to appear before making a decision about whether to add the surname in TMG or in my new software, whatever that turns out to be. Maybe the direct import will make the inference. Barbara [1] http://tmg.reigelridge.com/name-variations.htm -- Barbara Levergood levergood@att.net

    1. Re: [TMG-REFUGEES] Excluded information in other programs
    2. Barbara Levergood via
    3. In my testing, the excluded information in TMG Memos imported into Legacy Notes fields preserving the TMG exclusion marker "-". This apparently is not the way to mark Notes as private in Legacy (see #4 below), but at least the exclusion marker and the information itself are preserved on import, at least for TMG Memos. Here is what I did: 1. TMG GEDCOM export, step 7, has the following options: Exclusion: X Show excluded data X Show sensitive data X With markers I checked all 3 options. 2. Upon import into Legacy 8.0.0.439 (full), the only thing I saw relating to excluded/sensitive data was when I was asked the following: "Convert Private Text Several genealogy progams use curly braces to surround Private text. Would you like to have the {private text} changed to Legacy's [[private text]] during this import?" I chose "yes", although I am not sure whether it makes any difference. (That would have to be tested.) 3. I sometimes exclude the cause of death in the TMG memo field. This information was imported into Legacy, including the exclusion marker "-", in the Death Notes field. Because Death (also Birth, Christening/Bapt, Burial) sometimes has different properties in Legacy than the other events, I will give you another example, this time from a TMG Obituary field. Again, the excluded info appears in Legacy, including the exclusion marker "-", in the Obituary Notes field. 4. The Legacy help system explains in an article called "Notes": "Legacy has the ability to mark portions of your notes as Private. When you are editing notes you can add two opening brackets [[ to start the marking of private notes that you do not want to be printed, or exported. At the end of the private notes you add two closing brackets ]] and everything following the closing brackets becomes public notes again." Although I have not played with this in Legacy any more than what I just described, the next step would presumably be to enclose the text to be excluded in Legacy brackets. It is possible to search in Legacy for Death Memos or for Events Memos beginning with "-", but I do not know how tedious it would be to complete that operation. Hope this answers your question! 3. RootsMagic imported excluded events, but did not exclude them. I either goofed making the TMG Gedcom for import into Legacy or else excluded events didn't import. Think it was my error and I was into cleanup before I caught it. Tonight or tomorrow I'll do a test import on exclusions into my Legacy practice file. Or maybe Barbara L. can answer on how Legacy handles it. Barbara S.
