Rootsweb is now using a different web tool, HyperKitty, to display the TMG archives. Searching the web shows that HyperKitty is a new software package. In my opinion it is less complete and less friendly than the old RootsWeb archives package. It also seems to have a BUG. Depending upon how you "reply" to a post that reply will display one of three different ways when you view the archives on the web. I have not (yet) figured out what triggers each different display action. 1- The reply will show as a reply to the original post as expected. 2- The reply will produce a completely new thread/post and not be associated with the original post even though the Subject line is the same. 3- The reply will be accepted, and like all other replies will be included in the emails sent out, but by default WILL NOT SHOW among the replies to that thread. WORKAROUND When you view a particular thread/topic, by default you will see the original post followed by "some" replies sorted by thread. Between the original post and the first reply is the clickable text to instead "Show replies by date". ALWAYS CLICK ON THIS!! Only by displaying replies sorted by date will you see ALL replies. For some reason the display of replies sorted by thread may HIDE some replies but will still show others. Unfortunately neither I nor our List Administrator can find any option to change the default for the display to sort by date. Nor is there an option to separately list all posts in a chronological list, whether a new thread or a reply, like the old archives provided. At least that always used to let you know there was a new reply. The List Administrators, and RootsWeb, are aware of these issues. Hopefully there will be improvements over time in this new web archives software.
The old Rootsweb used an ancient version of Mailman 2, with what appeared to be a number of customization (as it didn't behave like a stock version of Mailman 2). The new Rootsweb uses the recently developed Mailman 3, which uses HyperKitty as the default way to build a store the archives (it was build more modular, so that distinct functionality was divided into distinct programs). My guess is that replies that aren't threaded were created in a way that they are not really replies in the sense defined by the email standards, quite possibly because people did a 'reply' from a digest. Note that the definition of a reply in the email standards is NOT based on having the same subject, but having a special header that should be added by the email program referencing the message it is a reply to. My guess is the old version just defaulted to not depending just on the formal threading but displayed things by subject too. Yes, Richard, that is clear. > My guess is that replies that aren't threaded were created > in a way that they are not really replies in the sense defined > by the email standards, quite possibly because people did > a 'reply' from a digest. While I share your "guess" that this is the root cause, to test I changed my receipt of posts to be separate emails, and "sometimes" even replies to the single email (which "should" abide by the standards and include the special header) don't show when the sort is by thread. The very unfortunate issue is that not only do replies sometimes not show as part of the thread, sometimes they don't show *anywhere* else, not even as their own separate thread!! Yet, if the user chooses "Show Replies by Date" now they DO show as a reply, so HyperKitty DOES recognize that they are a reply to that post and thus part of that thread. I suspect, as you do, that sort by Date does not depend just on the formal threading but displays by subject too. However, in my opinion how a user chooses to display the replies should not affect whether some replies either show or are completely hidden. Whatever "rules" are followed, replies should never be hidden. Michael
