    1. [TMG] Error message trying to make a new project

    3. After doing maintenance on the project before making the new Kladd2 project with those I am going to keep ,I got the same errormessage "OLE IDispatch exception code 0 from Panels: Maximum Panels Exceeded.." I can choose between Cancel ,ignore or help. What should I do? -----Opprinnelig melding----- Fra: Erik Hov [mailto:gj_erov7@bbnett.no] Sendt: 13. februar 2019 01:13 Til: 'The Master Genealogist Rootsweb Email List' <tmg@rootsweb.com> Emne: [TMG] Re: Error message trying to make a new project Since I wasn`t able to make a new project from the List of People ,I have now optimized and validating ,and TMG found no errors ,so I am now optimizing again ,and think I will retry making that new project.....

    3. <Sorry, no, that was misleading. The ID#s remain the same.< That was what I thought too!!. Very good to know. <So, instead of say 874000 people in the project, you now have say <871000 people? That seems to be a step in the right direction toward your <goal. Yes ,but so far ,I have only tried it out in the TEST project ,not in the Kladd project that I am going to do it in..... (It doesn`t do any harm if I should do any wrong in that TEST project!).

    3. Of course!. Then I have the same , Details, Children, Siblings (and possibly flag window ,but don`t remember). Doing a LoP report (not to screen...suppressing....) gives of course the Report Definition Screen and a Progress window pop-up, followed by a confirmation for copying to new project. The last window disappearing when the progress Window appears. -----Opprinnelig melding----- Fra: Dennis Lee Bieber [mailto:bieber.genealogy@earthlink.net] Sendt: 14. februar 2019 18:56 Til: The Master Genealogist Rootsweb Email List <tmg@rootsweb.com> Emne: [TMG] Re: Error message trying to make a new project At 2/14/2019 6:18 PM, Erik Hov wrote: >Only one TMG window..... > Not clear... 3. Erik, I asked about the number of datasets because I did some googling and saw issues reported by other users where the number of datasets in the project seemed to be a factor. It's possible your project is so large that some internal limit is being reached and if so, there's no way around it. Without having access to the code, it's hard to know why the LoP would have a limit like that, but the "create a new project" option (forget the exact name) is probably complicated because TMG has to figure out what subset of other records (the events, citations, sources, places, etc., referenced by the selected people) must be included in the new project. Unfortunately, I don't have any good suggestions for you. You could try a GEDCOM export/import, but there are several issues with that: 1 - TMG's GEDCOM export is slow, and with a large export like yours, it will take a long time. 2 - TMG's GEDCOM import is even slower. 3 - But worse, you'll lose data during the export/import cycle. TMG will export witnesses, but I don't think it imports them. You sentence templates and source templates will be lost, etc., etc. Why are you trying to export these people? Are you trying to create a smaller project that has less incidental people in it, or ? John

The OP's end target is to delete a lot of individuals from the database. But since there is no delete option for any filtered set, the planned procedure is to create a new project of those to be saved, verify it is complete, then delete the original project and rename the new project with the original name. I'm tempted to suggest creating a complete back-up (including exhibits) and entrusting the data to some other user of TMG -- just to see if that person has the same error after restoring the back-up and running the "new project" creation which is failing here.

Dennis, Yes, but why, i.e., what is the motivation to create a project that has a subset of the people in the current project? > I'm tempted to suggest creating a complete back-up (including > exhibits) and entrusting the data to some other user of TMG -- just > to see if that person has the same error after restoring the > back-up and running the "new project" creation which is failing > here. That would be helpful in that it would determine if the problem is unique to Eric's PC/TMG or if it happens on other PCs/other TMG installations. John

    3. At 2/15/2019 14:32, John Cardinal wrote >Yes, but why, i.e., what is the motivation to create a project that has a >subset of the people in the current project? John, Erik has a VERY karge project (about 875 thousand persons) and want to delete something like 121 thousand persons. The only way is to delete them individually (obviously unacceptable) or use the Secondary Output of a List of People report to create a new project with the remaining 753 thousand persons. He has apparently run into the 2GB file size limit which prompted him to want to delete these 121 thousand. He has run the maintenance routines including Optimize. But he is still having problems creating the new project and I suspect is still running into the 2GB limit somehow. I have suggested individidually deleting 100 to 200 people at a time and Optimizing until the size of the project is reduced enough to allow the List of People report method to work. I don't know of another way to delete large numbers of people from a project except perhaps editing each database and I don't want to get into that even knowing what I do about the file structure. From converstaion years ago, I recall Bob saying that global delete were just too fraught with danger. I expect you would agree. Still I wish there were a way that a user could generate a text ID# file of small (100 - 200?) groups that could be used as input to delete (mark) those persons. Then the user could review the project and "approve" the deletion by running Optimize. The problem would be that the persons to be deleted could not be connected/related to anyone else in the project. Any such relationships/connections would have to be deleted first. Lee

    3. The project actually has about 996000 people ,and it will have about 875000 people after deleting those about 121000.... Also found out about how I seemingly deleted people from last time I split out a project. I see I have written in my diary that I made a dataset in the datasetmanager ,and then put 3000 people in the focusgroup and then "sent them" into that new temporary dataset and deleted that dataset later ,and then optimized ,and continuing doing that until I had deleted the people I wanted to delete......

As has been said before -- that will not work!!! You cannot COPY (which is what you do in creating a new data set or a new project ) people to a new data set or project and then delete to new data set/project and expect those people to disappear from the original project. The thing is that COPYING people is NOT in any way MOVING them. TMG provise a way to MOVE people using the Project Explorer from one data set to another and have the person(s) be completely removed from the original data set. Highlight the persons in the Project Explerer to be moved to a different data set and, with the left button depressed, shift the mouse slight to the right. A sihoulette will appear, releaes the mouse button and a notice will appear stating that you can't move within the same data set and asking if you want to move to a different data set. Click [Yes] and the Move persons window will appear. Select the "Move selected people in the Project Explorer option and choose the desired data set. Click [OK] and the people will be copied to the "new" data set and deleted from the "old" one. You can do this move for one person of all those highlighted in the Project Explorer. I would strongly suggest that you make sure that those being moved do not have ANY connection with anyone else in the original data set. If they have, remove thos connections first. Lee

    3. I must have been doing it that way ,MOVING the people and not "copied them away". I knew it was something who wasn`t right.... <TMG provise a way to MOVE people using the Project Explorer from one data set to another and have the <person(s) be completely removed from the original data set. Would been OK to do it this way if I could be sure that having a dataset in the project will not overcome the limit etc. I am able to highlight people in the Project explorer ,but then you also write that "with the left button depressed, shift the mouse slight to the right" I don`t know what you mean by that ,but I can also get a silhouette appear by holding down the left mousebutton ,but releasing it doesn`t say anything about that I can't move within the same data ,and neither if want to move to a different data set........When pushing the right mousebutton I get an option to move them to focusgroup. From there you can move them to the new dataset. Anyway...guess this is the same as first putting the AAS=Y people in project explorer ,then take some portions of them at a time into the focusgroup ,then going to Edit-;Move people. <You can do this move for one person of all those highlighted in the Project Explorer. You can do this move for one person of all thoe highlighted in the Project Explorer"? ,do you mean I can only move one at a time ,even if several I highlighted? <I would strongly suggest that you make sure that those being moved do not have ANY connection with anyone <else in the original data set. If <they have, remove thos connections first. Hmmm ,that would be hard ,since many of them actually have connections with some AAS=N people that I shall keep in the old "dataset"...... When I have entered people into my project ,I have until last year had only one project for all lines on my family ,and several of them are related to others somehow..... Only option I can see to actually delete people from my project is to use the Move people feature on edit menu. Any other way around it?? The people I want to delete are marked with a blue accented AAS=Y flag ,and I am pretty sure I haven`t forgot anyone....also I have taken a backup before I started trying to make any dataset. The last time I worked on moving people ,it was not much trouble or work because it was my family from Sweden ,and they had nearly no connections with anyone else. All my other family are from Norway ,and have much more connections with others in the project. If I have to go through the moving people feature to "delete" people ,is it any possibility of sending those people to be deleted to a dataset in another smaller project??? ,or isn`t that possible? (Just a thougt....since I have several smaller projects to have datasets in ,and then I could be able to remove several people at once...). -----Opprinnelig melding----- Fra: Lee Hoffman [mailto:azchief@bellsouth.net] Sendt: 16. februar 2019 18:45 Til: The Master Genealogist Rootsweb Email List <tmg@rootsweb.com> Emne: [TMG] Re: Error message trying to make a new project At 2/16/2019 12:08, Erik Hov wrote >The project actually has about 996000 people ,and it will have about >875000 people after deleting those about 121000.... >Also found out about how I seemingly deleted people from last time I >split out a project. If you move them, any connectionsd will be broken. For example, if I select my granfather and all his descendants and move them to another data set, all of them plus my grandfather's parent will be move and my great-great grandparent will be missing a son. So, either you make the "disconnet" before the move or it will be made for you. The Move operation can also be done from the Edit menu. Just highlight the persons to be moved in the Project Explorer. I filtered the Project Explorer for a certain Flag = Y and then highlighted the entire Project Explorer. Next, select Move Person(s) from the Edit menu >Only option I can see to actually delete people from my project is to use >the Move people feature on edit menu. Any other way around it?? No, moving people is only possible from/to data sets within the same project. The data set to be "moved to" must already have been created when you select the Edit=>Move person(s) menu option. Lee

That greatgrandparent are not selected ,so why should that "parent" be moved after all?? Does the move feature move parents of the ones I select as well??. If so ,that will certainly destroy all I have done on setting flags ,and the result will be that I can`t use the move people feature either.....(?).

    3. Thanks for all help I have gotten with how to delete people from my large project!. I have not actually tried to move people yet. I am a bit concerned if moving a person also removes the person`s parent/parents ,so I will try to move two or three people first to see if it`s really true that the selected person`s parents also automatically are being moved. If that happens ,I must reconsider what to do....even if I really don`t see any other option for deleting those 121000 people than using the move people feature...... Erik

    3. <The parents shouldn't be removed as people, but the parental relationship (the relationship tag between them) will be removed.< OK ,so if I remove my grandfather ,my grandfather will be moved to the other dataset while my grandfather`s parents will remain in the old dataset but without my grandfather as their child? Lee wrote that "For example, if I select my granfather and all his descendants and move them to another data set, all of them plus my grandfather's parent will be move and my great-great grandparent will be missing a son. OK that the greatgrandparents would be missing a son ,but not OK if my grandfather`s parent/s will also move automatically when using the move feature. If I have to disconnect all the relationships to the people with AAS=Y flag before using the move people feature ,that would be quite time consuming. Will try out the move people feature for two or three selcted people for a start to see if their parents really are included in the move......
