    1. [TMG] Change Electoral Roll Tag to Residence Tag

    3. I am still using my TMG 9.05 on my Windows 8.1 with fingers crossed. At the present time I have been entering details for a family member from the electoral rolls as below. {[P] was listed as <#[M2]> <on page [M3]> in the [M4] Electorate Roll section of the New Zealand Electoral Roll, [D] <with [M5] electoral qualifications> <and also property qualifications: [M6]>. } [:CR:] [:CR:] [:TAB:]In [D] [PS] address was <[M1],> [L] <with [PP] occupation being [M7].> <([M8])> What I do like especially on SS is that this shows the occupation from the roll for the family member's Grandmother (She is also my 1st cousin 1 time removed). "Married" is usually given as her occupation on the electoral roll. (Without going into further details, my relative should be aware of this as it does explain important details about her Grandmother) I can also add the electoral roll for Grandma's husbands but these would only show up on their details. What I would like is to have Grandma's Husbands and childrens Electoral Rolls on each person's details rather than suggesting that my relative go to each of the family member's. I am wondering whether it would be easier and best to go to each of the family members and change the Electoral Roll Tag at the top left to the Residence Tag [:CR:] [:CR:] [:TAB:] [P] <and [PO]> <and [WO]> lived <at [M1],> <in [L]><[D]> <([M2])> So I would be able to add in her spouse as Principal2 and the children as Witnesses and add each person's occupation at that time in <([M2])>, probably as 'Electoral Roll gives occupation as ....) Anything I should be aware of if I do this? Jim

Maybe I am wrong, but the use here of the Electoral Roll Tags sounds very much like a census by a different name as the resulting data is similar -- showing that persons were in residence in a place, held various occupations, and other information How the data is entered into TMG is more often the choice of a user than any set rule. In most cases, I have separate Tags for each "major" piece of data. That is, a Birth Tag records the age and birthplace, an Occupation Tag for that information, and the Census Tag to record the fact of enrollment on the census. The census can also support Marriage and Parent-Child Relationship Tags. As for the census Tag itself, I usually place the Head of Household as Principal #1 and all others in the household as Witnesses. The exceptions to this last is if one or more of the household are merely lodgers, boarders, or otherwise not related in which case they are often ignored (although sometimes they unrelated persons may wind up being related later and for that resaon are then included). I do not enter a Residence Tag as well as Census Tag as that seems to be redundant to me as the presence of the Census Tag implies residence in my opinion. On the other hand, using a Residence Tag instead of a Census Tag would remove any ambiguity that might be seen. The questions here is whether I (the user) make the decision whether being on the census meant the person resided there or whether a reader made the decision. Whatever Tag is used, the Source would be the same. I prefer the Census Tag myself in that it shows both the fact of the census event as well as implies residence while the Residence Tag does the same except the fact of the census event is "hidden" in footnotes/endnotes. If I am making the right comparison above regarding Electoral Rolls and Censuses then I don't think you are missing anything other than the philosophy of Tag choice and the various implications, redundancies, etc. I tend to use the multiple Tags idea rather than record everything in one Tag because this allow me greater control over the sentences in the output. On the other hand, I have used a single Tag on occasion to achieve a different "sound" to the output. Actually, I could achieve different "sounds" using either method -- the difference being how much work I want to put into things and this will vary depending on which Tags/Roles I use and what I want in the output. Sometimes I prefer A and other times B. There have also been time when I used C (usually a mix of A & B).<g> Lee
