    3. This is common with many e-mail systems. Some refuse to send attachments which are seen as potentially risky, while others refuse to accept them. The ruse of amending the file name sometimes works, but some systems are "clever" enough to reject those as well. To transmit such files is a pain. With an IT-literate person on the other end, one can use "ftp". If you have a web-site, you can set it up so that a "right-click / save-as" will work. As has been said - a CD-ROM is also good - though only if the person has a computer with a drive (many small laptops, tablets, etc, don't). Fun times. -----Original Message----- From: tmg-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:tmg-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Lee Hoffman/KY via Sent: 04 August 2015 19:18 To: john@heckels.org.uk; JEH; tmg@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [TMG] OT-recommendations for UnZip freeware At 8/4/2015 13:18, you wrote: >I use gmail and just did a test. The suggestion above will work. However, it is possible that the recipient may try to open the file before reading the message instructions. Opening a ZIP file in a text editor in itself is probably not going to cause harm to the file if the file is immediately closed without any changes being made. But even and inadvertent key-press can damage the file and make it unreadable by the compression program. The idea is still sound, but instead, I would suggest changing the File Type to something different like ABC or XYZ. This would likely to cause the recipient's computer to display a message that it does not know how to open the file making the recipient go back to the message and reading the instructions.
