In trying to revise my marriage sentence, I'm getting some unexpected results. My original sentence was: [P] married [PO] <[PARO]> <[D]> <[L]><; [M]>. For children of couples who are not direct ancestors or siblings of an ancestor, I generally just list their children in the memo. So in the output for that sentence below, the words within quotes were entered manually: She married John BLACK, son of James Black and Eleanor Jones, on 27 November 1793; "children (b. KY; surname BLACK): James, Jane, and Eleanor." I recently realized that I shouldn't have to type all that in the memo every time, so I created a new marriage sentence of: [P] married [PO] <[PARO]> <[D]> <[L]><; [M1]><; children (<[M3]; >surname [SL]): [M2]> Where M1 is any comment about the marriage, M2 is the list of children, and M3 is place of birth or baptism. Now I'm seeing several problems. 1. The surname variable is of the subject, which may be the wife. It needs to be the name of the husband, but there's no surname variable for P1. 2. M3 needs to allow for either b. (born) or bp. (baptized) and a place which may or may not be in one of the location fields. I couldn't figure out how to do that with the available variables. 3. Also, the output inserts an unwanted space after the parenthesis and before M3 like this: "children ( b. KY; surname JONES):" Any thoughts much appreciated, KayS

Kay, In TMG 9, which I assume you are using since you are using he subject variables, there is indeed: [P1L] > 2. M3 needs to allow for either b. (born) or bp. For the born/baptism issue, either you will have to type it in the memo, or use two separate Memo segments - one for born and one for baptism, with a Sentence like: <: b. [M3]><: bp. [M4]> Since the place may or may not be the same as the marriage place, you cannot put the place variables in the sentence, so the place has to be described in the Memo. If it is not the same as in the marriage tag, just type it in. If it is, put the [L] or appropriate place part variables in the Memo segment. > 3. Also, the output inserts an unwanted space after the parenthesis and > before M3 like this: "children ( b. KY; surname JONES):" If the Sentence above is copied accurately, there are issues with the conditional brackets. They are not entered in pairs. I think you need: [P] married [PO] <[PARO]> <[D]> <[L]><; [M1]><; children ([M3]><; surname [P1F])><: [M2]> Terry Reigel
Thanks, Terry. That all makes sense so I'll give it a try.
