I prefer to not print many of my census tags, but I want to record the data anyway for research purposes. So the default census tag is not selected to be output in my journal report options. I created an identical Census-Print tag which is selected to be output, so whether or not a particular census is output can be controlled by choosing Census or Census-Print on the tag's drop-down list in the person view. For the Census-Print tag I do what Karla has suggested, provide roles to vary the output wording. For example: Role Princ-fullname: [P+] <|and [PO]> appeared on the census <of [D]> <[L]> <[M]> Role YearOnly: [P] <|and [PO]> appeared on the census <of [Y]> <[L]> <[M]> Role YearOnly-firstname: [PF] <|and [POF]> appeared on the census <of [Y]> <[L]> <[M]> Role TheyLived: They lived <in [Y]> <[L]> <[M]> Role Concat: [+] < [M1]> <, [M2]> <. [M3]> The Concat role is used for a later year after a tag using one of the other roles. It typically would include [L] and [D] or [Y] in one of the memo segments. So by choosing different roles for different years and putting a bit of text into the Memo I can get output such as: "John Doe appeared on the census of 1910 in Chicago with wife Mary. They lived in 1920 in Evanston, Illinois and in 1930 were back in Chicago where John was employed as a butcher." -----Original Message----- From: tmg-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:tmg-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Joe LaPointe via Sent: Wednesday, June 10, 2015 8:06 AM To: tmg@rootsweb.com Subject: [TMG] Repetitive Census Sentences In the 1900 - 1940 U.S> Census, I have the following sentence for the principles: [P] <|and [PO]> appeared on the 19xx Federal Census living in < [L3],>< [L7]><, [M1]>. The problem I'm running into is when a couple has the same sentence repeated for 2 - 3 census without any other events between the census years. As an example, I get the following: [P] <|and [PO]> appeared on the 1910 Federal Census living in < [L3],>< [L7]><, [M1]>. [P] <|and [PO]> appeared on the 1920 Federal Census living in < [L3],>< [L7]><, [M1]>. [P] <|and [PO]> appeared on the 1930 Federal Census living in < [L3],>< [L7]><, [M1]>. This does not read very well. I have this problem with 12 couples. Any suggestions as to how I can fix this problem so the narrative is not so repetitive? I would like an approach that does not require editing custom census tags for each of the 12 couples.
