    3. I have been able to run UFT directly off a USB drive on Windows XP. I don't have to copy any files to the hard drive. I can even run Roots4 (the DOS version of UFT, and several earlier Windows versions of the database program) in a DOS box on Windows XP. In fact, Roots4 and UFT work off the same database files, that is, I can update my database in UFT and see the changes in Roots4. The only time that was really useful was when I wanted to access my database on an old portable computer I had that was too slow to use Windows programs effectively. The main point is that Windows programs written for older versions of Windows (pre-XP) did not know about the Registry and often kept control of the program in their own files. Later programs stuffed some data into the Registry during the install process and if you didn't run the install process on a specific machine, they would not run on that machine.
