I believe it "should" work fine. However, I'd recommend just upgrading immediately, before you do anything else (except maybe make a disc image of the 8.1 setup first, though from what I've heard, you'll have zero interest in returning to 8.1). To me, it just makes sense to get the OS up and running before anything else, then do the application installations once.
