Chris had suggested option 1 ('On This Day'), I had already mentioned option 2 (Legacy Calendar Report) though I hadn't looked at Rootsmagic, but option 3 (Excel/Word) gives me what looks like just the perfect mixture of flexibility and simplicity (relative to doing it all by hand!) that I was looking for.
