I'm glad you had some success, Tom. My project (39,000 people, all Exhibits external) is still running slow! I have a new PC with a modern processor and 16Gb of RAM, running fully updated Windows 10 Home. System Mechanic is running continuously, and has file fragmentation always below 1%. My Project is stored in the default \Documents\... location on the Hard Drive, which is less than 30% full. Task Manager shows 4-20% of CPU in use and 20% of Memory as I write this with Thunderbird and TMG open. If I try to Add a Person, open a Tag, or even open Preferences, it takes 10-12 seconds to enable me to enter any data. From the suggestions in this post I: - turned off Accents (all based on Flags only) completely, - now have Project Explorer sorting on ID Number but that Window is not open at present, and - turned off the Display Age column. Still no improvement! Entering or editing data is a painfully slow process. Any suggestions welcome, please. Bruce Fairhall On 2/12/2017 6:27 AM, Tom Coughlan wrote: Thank you John, Paul and Michael. I checked all suggestions made by John but found everything in order. But there seems no end to the surprises - mostly good, fortunately - that TMG holds. As Paul and Michael's wondered, I did indeed have an accent based on the ID No. rather than a flag. Setting a new flag and basing the accent on that resolved the issue immediately. I also followed Paul's advice and checked the Performance Recommendations. And, there, of course at the very top, is a warning that Accents based on flags or switched off are likely to yeild better performance. So thank you all for your help; issue solved. Tom Coughlan

This could be having a small effect, as TMG activity will be touching many files over and over (every time you change focus person TMG has to access multiple event records, name records, etc. depending upon what windows are normally open in your layout). If System Mechanic acts on file/directory activity, it may be trying to defragment TMGs data files each time you make a move in the data. > My Project is stored in the default \Documents\... location on the Hard > Drive, which is less than 30% full. Another possibility: Is your system configured to have the drive (directory) space automatically compressed? If it is, you are constantly decompressing and recompressing the files as you move about in the data. -- [email protected] Dennis Lee Bieber HTTP://home.earthlink.net/~bieber.genealogy/
Thanks for your thoughts, Dennis I forgot about TMG still being unable to use higher memory. However, hopefully other programs will be using it! I'll check System Mechanic operation with the IOLO company, and see what its load is. In Task Manager, the highest memory users seem to be: Anti-Virus 240,000K Thunderbird 172,000K Firefox 312,000K - these 3 are always running when I'm using TMG. Maybe I need to experiment with the last 2. And of course there are 82 occasions of SVChost running - all of different sizes! Is there any way to find just which programs are running in the 2Gb area of RAM, so I can see what is crowding TMG? No, I have not set up to use drive compression, as I have lots of drive space.
