    3. I find that I work on my genealogy pretty intently for a while and then come back to it some years later. There are lots of problems with this approach of course. The last time I finished documenting things up I put it by but continued to collect new data sources. Now I have to organize and document them and distribute the information to the appropriate tags, but some things have changed in the meantime and this where I need advice. I collected a dozen or so Parish Register entries (baptism, marriage, burial) from LDS microfilm and microfiche. These were hi-res scans of the film and show the original documents. Very nice. Many of those are no longer available however. The data can still be had at Family Search and also to some extent at FreeReg, but not the document images. I have compared the online data with my scanned originals and it looks pretty good. How do you folks record these sources and what do you use for the repository? Any help welcome. Robert Thorpe

Thus if you got your data from LDS Microfilm, you should cite the LDS Microfilm. Now, in citing microfilm, your citation should describe what was filmed, so other copies of that data could be referenced by other researchers. For Microfilm and other similar direct image copies, I let the 'top level' of the citation be the original source that was copied (as everything after that was mechanical copying), but the citation clearly indicates what copy I got the information through, as different copying paths may have differing quality issues (the original copying process being the one with the most chance of issues). If after citing the source you looked at, you want to add a note about other methods available to find that source, I would think that would be ok, especially if you have personally gone back a reviewed that alternate source. Alternate availability is one big reason to clearly cite the original document as part of your citation for the copy you saw. For repository, if the microfilms are no longer available from the LDS, then your choice is to either still indicate them as the repository in case they release the data again, and/or (for items you retain scans of) your own person library, or since the LDS is pretty much the implied repository for LDS films, you might just not list them (not all sources need a repository, if the location to find them is common or clearly known). -- Richard Damon

Robert, If I viewed an actual image of the register, I use the Parish Register as the Source, and the Film in the Family History Library as the repository. I only include the Repository information in my Bibliography entry. I have examples of Baptismal register sources I viewed on LDS Films described with my Baptismal Register Source Template in my on-line book: https://www.mjh-nm.net/SRCTMPLS.HTML#BaptismalRegister That gives examples of output for Footnotes and Bibliography for both Parish registers and Bishop's Transcripts which works the way I prefer in the output in both TMG and Second Site. Hope this gives you ideas. Michael
