    1. [TMG] Input file read failure when try to do TMG project backup
    2. Lynn McLaughlin
    3. I'm having a terrible time trying to get TMG moved to my new computer. One problem after another, some solved by uninstalling FoxPro, uninstalling and reinstalling TMG, initializing repeat files, validating file integrity, using Repair mode, etc. Things seeem to be OK until I try to do a backup, and I get the "Input file read failure - This error occurs when a file read operation is performed on a ZIP file that is locked or restricted by another process." The file it is trying to back up is the last alphabetically in the Projects file - it is a .FLP file. If I delete that last file, it just complains about the new last file. When I say Ok on the error it says the backup is complete, but there isn't actually a new sqz file. What are these FLP files? Can I just delete them all safely? I'm guessing they are for filters, so I might have queries that won't run, but it is better than backups that won't work. I tried this (saved them in a desktop folder), and now the backup stops on an FLE file. I recognized the names in the FLP files and ones I created, but the FLEs seem more generic. I'm not sure deleting those would be a good idea. I have verified that the folders I have set in the advance preferences all exist on my hard drive by browsing to them - for instance, C:\Users\LynnA\Documents\The Master Genealogist v9\Backups\. I sure hope someone can help! Thanks, Lynn

    3. I have one more thing to add the the message I just sent. I've just noticed that when I try to do backups, on "Step 3: Options" if I uncheck "External exhibits" then the backup works. I don't know how that would be related to files in the Projects folder (sorry for the typo in the original, where I said Projects file). 3. Hi Lynn, This implies to me that the way your external exhibits are referenced within the TMG Project database does not match in some way with the location of where your exhibits are now being stored. It may be as simple that on your new computer you are using a different login and hence the old exhibit file path recorded in the Project does not match where they are now stored. And what OS/processor is the machine you are having the failures on? File sizes are limited to 2 (or 4 -- it's confusing*) GB if one is running on a 32-bit OS, so having a lot of large external exhibits included into the backup could be producing ZIP file that is larger than that limit. The fact that you see the error message on the "last file" is just an artifact that the backup procedure doesn't detect the failure until it finishes. * an unsigned 32-bit integer spans 0..4GB, but much software is written using signed 32-bit integers which span -2..2GB -- [email protected] Dennis Lee Bieber HTTP://home.earthlink.net/~bieber.genealogy/

    3. I think I have gotten to the bottom of this. It occurred to me this morning that the message about the the last file was a red herring - maybe the last thing it successfully did, instead of the first it failed on. The problem was with OneDrive. On the previous computer it worked fine having all my files there, but on this one, OneDrive kept crashing. I followed Terry's excellent advice on moving to a new computer and got TMG to look for the exhibits in the folder on my C drive instead, and that seems to be OK. I've uninstalled and re-installed OneDrive and maybe that will be fixed as well, but if it is temperamental, I'm going to leave my TMG files on my C drive. They are backed up to Backblaze, so I can't think of any real usefulness of OneDrive. Do any of you others use it happily? Thanks! Do any of you others use it happily? ANY system that is monitoring/copying files to synchronize with "cloud storage" is a problem for TMG (and really, any other database system) as the "cloud" can easily get out of sync with TMG/database files (copy data file but not corresponding index say), or cause interference by having a file locked during the copy that local software is trying to update. Even an "on-demand" virus checker could cause timing problems if it checks data files everytime they get opened. TMG data files should reside in non-monitored directories. Backups should be done manually and moved to another directory which can be synced/monitored (or your backup program only runs on a schedule when you are not using TMG -- I have Acronis True Image running backing up: C: on first Saturday of month, D: (video editing) on third Saturday, and E: (my archive of photos, comics, and downloaded installation files -- and TMG/Quicken backups) on the second Saturday. To a 6TB (5.5) external drive; currently just under half full, but the next cycle of backups is time for "full" rather than "incremental" so will take a major amount of space. As for OneDrive -- only reason I activated it is to make OneNote happy on my Samsung S9 phone, old Samsung/Nook tablet, and desktop computer. > >Thanks! > >Lynn > >On Sat, Apr 21, 2018 at 10:05 AM, Dennis Lee Bieber < >[email protected]> wrote: > >> >> At 4/20/2018 11:58 PM, Lynn McLaughlin wrote: >> >I have one more thing to add the the message I just sent. I sure hope someone can help! Hi Lynn, There have been many comments and confusion. Perhaps I can help. > The file it is trying to back up... As Dennis correctly noted, and you subsequently guessed, the file mentioned in the log is the last file it "successfully" completed. > What are these FLP files? While this file has nothing to do with your issue, for completeness there have been several posts, by Lee Hoffman and others, which describe all the many file types TMG uses. This is one of the many files which store saved Filter definitions, FLP being for List of People filters. > I have verified that the folders ... all exist on my hard drive Good. That is the first thing to check. Saving the backup file to somewhere other than the hard drive is often the problem. > I've just noticed that when I try to do backups, ... if I uncheck > "External exhibits" then the backup works. That is good detective work. Exhibits may be the problem. But there may be other issues. As you discovered, the problem simply manifested while the many exhibits were being backup up. > ... The problem was with OneDrive. Yes, having ANY program monitoring the folders of TMG data, especially the backup folder, can cause TMG to fail during a backup. This is the most common cause of a TMG backup failure. It won't always fail, but it is a problem just waiting to happen. > I'm going to leave my TMG files on my C drive... > They are backed up to Backblaze... Leaving TMG data files on your local hard drive is not only a good idea, it is *essential* to ensure TMG will work properly. And all folders for those files should not have any program, such as Backblaze or OneDrive or a virus checker, automatically monitoring them for any purpose, especially for backup. You should backup your external exhibits by some separate program, like WinZip. And then backup your TMG files excluding exhibits using TMG. Now you can copy or move those two files to another folder where they can be saved by some other program, like either Backblaze or OneDrive. > I can't think of any real usefulness of OneDrive. > Do any of you others use it happily? My personal opinion of OneDrive is that it is a hazard to my use of my computer. I researched on Google how to completely remove it from my Win10 computer and did so. Others may feel differently.
