Due to hardware problems, I have had to build a new computer. On which I had Windows 10 installed. I have successfully installed TMGv9.05 and it appears to be working correctly. Following the instructions provided by Dennis Lee Bieber, I successfully installed the Microsoft PDF printer. I then attempted to generate an Individual Narrative preview report for one person, with the output directed to the printer. The selected printer is "Miscrosoft Print to PDF". TMG generated the report, but instead of sending the output to the printer, the program is attempting to save the report as a file in "C:\ProgramData\The Master Genealogist v9\Buttons". In Preferences, I have the report output directed to "C:\Genealogy\TMGv9\Report_output\". Yesterday I created a custom toolbar. In the process, I did select some pictures from "C:\ProgramData\The Master Genealogist v9\Buttons". The report is being generated from the Menu. If I generate the report from the button on the Report Toolbar, the output goes to a file as above. When I look at the generated report, it appears to be a normal Individual Narrative report. Does anyone have any ideas about what is happening? -- Jack D. Lovelace
Jack, I don't have TMG on my Windows 10 machine, so I can't replicate this, but here's something to check. On any Windows 10 applications I have tried, a command to Print using the Microsoft Print to PDF choice brings up a dialog box which shows the PDF file will be stored in the Documents folder and allows a file name to be specified. The folder where the file is stored can be changed in that dialog box. If you are not seeing this use Windows Control Panel to check the printer port assignment. Specifically: 1) In the Control Panel select Devices and Printers, then right click on Microsoft Print to PDF. 2) Choose Printer Properties and select the Ports tab. 3) In the resulting list see which box is checked for Microsoft Print to PDF. You may need to hover the cursor over the printer name to expose the full name or names. 4) If port "PORTPROMPT" is checked, your system is the same as mine and I have no further suggestion. But if not, try the following steps. 5) Cancel out and repeat steps 1 and 2 but this time click the button to Change Properties and supply the needed administrator password. 6) Go again to the Ports tab and put a check in the box on the PORTPROMPT line. This should add Microsoft Print to PDF to any printer that's already using that port. 7) Uncheck any other items in the list, then click OK to accept the new port assignment and see if that fixes the problem. Donald, The port is PORTPROMPT and the printer is Miscrosoft Print to PDS, Microsoft XPS Document Writer On 3/26/2018 3:51 PM, Donald Range wrote: > Jack, > > I don't have TMG on my Windows 10 machine, so I can't replicate this, > but here's something to check. > > On any Windows 10 applications I have tried, a command to Print using > the Microsoft Print to PDF choice brings up a dialog box which shows > the PDF file will be stored in the Documents folder and allows a file > name to be specified. That's the same as my Win 10, with the two Microsoft printers being assigned to port PORTPROMPT. So that suggestion doesn't help. Any chance that when you look at the printers listed in Control Panel > Devices and Printers you see more than one instance of Microsoft Print to PDF? I see that on my system, although with a different (hardware, not PDF) printer that apparently was installed twice. The second instance has the same name followed by "Copy 1." If you had two instances there could be different port assignments for the two cases. Barring that, I see on the web that some people have solved Win 10 Microsoft Print to PDF issues by reinstalling the printer. Instructions for doing that are on a Microsoft Community website at https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-hardware/how-to-add-or-reinstall-the-microsoft-pdf-printer/70377c34-e50a-42be-b9f3-92345d6e25df. Note that one of the comments you will find by scrolling down on this website says that the instructions (which show the new printer being assigned to Port LPT1) are in error, and it should actually be assigned to PORTPROMPT as we have been discussing. I have not tried removing or installing Microsoft Print to PDF, so I can't say if there are any new problems the procedure might introduce. If I were doing it I would install it as Copy 1 and see if it solves the problem. If both the original and Copy 1 are installed both should be listed on the list of printers that comes up on any application's Print command. If Copy 1 works better than the original you could then remove the original, or if not, remove Copy 1.
