    3. I am doing some clean-up of sources. I know there's a way to pick a source and generate a list of record(s) it is attached to, because I did it a few years ago, but I can't find a description of this in the documentation I have. Can anyone remind me of how to do this? And this time, I'll add something to the index of my book so I can find it again! To answer your question more directly, I think the main reasons not to renumber are - Breaks any connections to files, notes, etc., that use the TMG ID#. - Breaks config files for Second Site *IF* you have added links based on ID numbers. You've covered both of those. - If you have published web sites with SS, and used the "Static Page Assignments" option, renumbering people will change URLs that would otherwise not change. In my opinion, a TMG ID is a unique, meaningless identifier and I would not attach meaning to it or care about the values for some other reason. John

    1. [TMG] Renumbering a TMG Project
    2. Toby Turner
    3. First, thanks to all who alerted me to the need to check for primary births, marriages and deaths. I was startled to learn I still had 7 non-primary marriages (all now fixed), about a dozen non-primary marriages and 6 single-spaced pages of names for non-primary births. Ouch. I thought I'd been so careful with entering data, but . . . evidently, not so much. Now that I've also gone through all my people with no relationships, I would like to renumber my database. It would be nice if I could remember to use the F2 key, but I rarely do. _I do not use the ID# as reference #s for files_. But, I am concerned about Witness links disappearing. Will this happen? I've made a list of all the ID# links I use in SS on the Main Page, as a way for people to quickly access interesting people (besides using my various indices) so I could easily replace the ID#s if I renumber. Are there any reasons not to renumber? Regards, Toby Turner

Try to use the error messages in the log to see which people are >involved; that should get you started. As John said, look at the error message. It should give you a TMG ID# somewhere that is causing the problem. You can then go up and down the tree to identify where a parent is noted as a descendent of that parent. What you are looking for is a person for whom you do not have parents -- that is the person is an end-of-line ancestor. The problem is that that person(s) will have parent(s), but the parents are actually a descendant(s) of that end-of-line ancestor. Lee

    1. [TMG] Re: [SS] Converting "Note" Tags to "Reference"
    2. John Cardinal
    3. Greg, The Change Event Type feature in TMG Utility may be able to help. Unfortunately, it does not include an option to restrict which Note events are changed. It does have a People filter, so you can limit the Note tags to people who match a Flag Filter. So, you might proceed like this: 1 – In TMG, add a custom flag and set it to "Y" for everyone who have a Note event that you want to change. 2 – In TMG, add the Reference event if you have not does so already. 3 – Close TMG project. 4 – In TMG Utility, use the Change Event Type feature to change the events. Make sure you use the "Set Flag Filter" button to limit the change to people with the proper value in the custom flag. If some people have both a Note event that shouldn't change and a Note event that should, you'll have some manual cleanup to do. I am guessing that will be less work than doing all the changes by hand. John

    3. I want to change some tags from "Note" to "Reference" in TMG 9.05), but I only want to change those tags that contain a certain string (word). I estimate that have over 1,000 occurrences of the "Note" tags that I want to convert in my database. I can use a filter to identify the tags to be change. Will TMGU or another utility make this conversion for all Note tags that meet this criterion without my having to change all 1,000 tags manually? Greg

It indicates that there is a circular relationship that makes it impossible for SS to compute a relationship for the person identified in the error message (#157). Given the nature of how relationships work, the error usually applies to many people. For example, if a line goes "A son of B son of C son of D son of A", then the error will occur for all the people involved (A, B, C, and D). I think that I solved it using John Cardinal's utilities. Under Functions, you want Other > Find and Replace. In my own example I used: Field to change: External Exibit File Paths Find what: C:\Users\Gwen\ (etc) Replace with: C:\Users\Kathryn\ (etc) As usual, you want to make sure there is a checkmark in Log Only the first time you try this, to make sure it will do what you want it to do. 3. I encountered this when moving stuff from another person's computer to my own (mine now being the primary). I think that I solved it using John Cardinal's utilities. 3. I did some more varied tests to try to get my exhibits to show up. !. I uninstalled TMG 9.05 and did a new re-install. 2. Copied my Genealogy Exhibit folder from my PC to my Laptop. 3. Viewing ALL my exhibits under the dropdown menu I noticed many exhibits were displayed, but just as many were not displayed (frowning icon), even after the re-install. This was also happening before I did the re-install. I said I had 3184 exhibits in my folders, but the VFI said that 4414 external exhibits were checked but 1093 were not found. It also said Validation complete. No problems found. I suppose many of my exhibits are used multiple times, the reason for 4414 exhibits. So...I don't know what is going wrong! When I use "Validate File Integrity" it does not capture the exhibits as the "User name" is now different. I have 3184 exhibits. How can I fix this? 3. Hi Damon, Done that! I have 8 separate folders and all were selected, with one folder having the option to select a subfolder. Under the Search for missing external exhibits is a button to take you to a screen to define where VFI should search, you need to add the new folder to the list there and then run the VFI -- Richard Damon _______________________________________________ Email preferences: http://bit.ly/rootswebpref Unsubscribe https://lists.rootsweb.com/postorius/lists/[email protected] Privacy Statement: https://ancstry.me/2JWBOdY Terms and Conditions: https://ancstry.me/2HDBym9 Rootsweb Blog: http://rootsweb.blog RootsWeb is funded and supported by Ancestry.com and our loyal RootsWeb community

    3. Yes I did select "Search for missing external exhibits" And in Preferences>Current Project Option>Advance>Exhibit Folder I pointed to where the Exhibits were situated (missed this option before): C:\Users\Ron\Pictures\Genealogy Exhibits\ But still not luck. As per Damon's suggestion I copied the Exhibits to a new folder: C:\Genealogy\Genealogy Exhibits\ Ran the VFI again, but again still not luck. Looking at the TMG properties for the exhibits, they each refer to: C:\Users\ronch\Pictures\Genealogy Exhibits\ Seems the TMG file references are hard and fast to the user name "ronch". I thought just by "pointing" to where the files are would do the trick but apparently not. So...I still wondering how to fix this. "Re-pointing" each individual exhibit...surely not?! TMG will store the full absolute path of exhibits, so if you transfer a file set that refers to things that move you need to fix all those links. You should be able to use VFI, the one key thing is that on your laptop you will need to reset the directory it is looking for the exhibits to the new path. The way I get around this is that I don't place my files in the C:\Users area, but created a directory C:\Genealogy, and place my files under that. That way everything is in the same place when I change machines, so no 'file not found' issues. If you do this, you will have to fix things up, once. -- Richard Damon
