follow on to my previous message When using LoP report to change a flag on everyone in current Focus Group, TMG locks up when it gets to the dialog box: "Flag changes are complete, 17 flags were prepared" computer locks, needs Task Manager to close TMG Could there be any connection between the two lockups? Jim
I am using TMGv9.05 on Windows10/64 I have 3 separate projects, plus the Sample project, each in a separate folder. Never before have I had difficulty changing from one project to another, but today when I tried to change, TMG quickly locked up. Here is what happened: Program A was open and running. From File > dropdown box I clicked on path of Program B Up comes dialog box "Would you like to close current Project?" Yes - No - Cancel No matter which choice was made, TMG9 locked and only Task Manager closed it. After closing, I was able to start the Sample program and same thing happened there. Can anyone tell me what has happened & how can I fix it? Would it help to do a re-install of TMG? Jim

Win10 OneDrive does not act as a remote "backup" facility -- when OneDrive is active it treats your local computer as the "backup" and uses the remote storage for your home directory contents. This is sort of the reverse of how OneDrive operates on Win7. It offers configuration choices to prevent OneDrive subdirectories being copied to the local machine, but not the other way around. From an investigation back in March: -=-=-=- Note that https://support.office.com/en-ie/article/choose-which-onedrive-folders-to-sync-to-your-computer-98b8b011-8b94-419b-aa95-a14ff2415e85 has a disconcerting comment -- they speak of not syncing OneDrive content /to/ the computer, and state """ If you uncheck a folder you are syncing to your computer, the folder will be removed from your computer. The folder and its contents will still be available online. """ No mention of how not to sync the computer to OneDrive. Just another reason I don't have it installed/running (I think I may have it on my phone and Nook tablet, but even there I don't think I have it active). Based upon the online documentation, OneDrive wants to "be" the primary storage location for a user, with controls over how much of /its/ data is duplicated locally -- rather than being a secondary storage for selected local data. -=-=-=- From a week later: -=-=-=- Earlier this week I Googled pages for OneDrive... and the conclusion I reached is that the only configuration it provides is on which cloud directories are replicated on the local machine, but not which local directories are to be on the cloud. https://www.dummies.com/computers/operating-systems/windows-10/how-to-modify-onedrive-settings-in-windows-10/ Note the phrasing: "...which OneDrive folders should also live on your PC" OneDrive wants to be just that -- a cloud-based "One Drive" master for all your user data shared among desktop, tablet, phone, with ability to replicate some directories locally for off-line usage. Everything I've seen indicates that if OneDrive is active, it /will/ redirect your user directory to the cloud. https://mywindowshub.com/how-to-enable-or-disable-onedrive-integration-in-windows-10/ Note that the instructions shown here essentially disable all of OneDrive. Not mentioned: you need to run as admin. """ This policy setting lets you prevent apps and features from working with files on OneDrive. If you enable this policy setting: * Users can't access OneDrive from the OneDrive app and file picker. * Windows Store apps can't access OneDrive using the WinRT API. * OneDrive doesn't appear in the navigation pane in File Explorer. * OneDrive files aren't kept in sync with the cloud. * Users can't automatically upload photos and videos from the camera roll folder. If you disable or do not configure this policy setting, apps and features can work with OneDrive file storage. """ One of the other items is "Save documents to OneDrive by default" which would be the nicer choice (it lets one still access OneDrive manually). Problem: The requirements state Windows Server 2012 R2, Win 8.1, or Win RT 8.1 only. Not of use for Win10. "Prevent OneDrive from generating network traffic until the user signs in to OneDrive" might be usable if one does not use an account that logs into M$ (ie; one is using a "local log-in" -- I got caught by that once when I had to register to activate the "free" Visual Studio; and then had to provide a password on my next login; Windows had changed my "no password, local" user account to a network login account). """ Enable this setting to prevent the OneDrive sync client (OneDrive.exe) from generating network traffic (checking for updates, etc.) until the user signs in to OneDrive or starts syncing files to the local computer. If you enable this setting, users must sign in to the OneDrive sync client on the local computer, or select to sync OneDrive or SharePoint files on the computer, for the sync client to start automatically. If this setting is not enabled, the OneDrive sync client will start automatically when users sign in to Windows. If you enable or disable this setting, do not return the setting to Not Configured. Doing so will not change the configuration and the last configured setting will remain in effect. """ -=-=-=- The only other option I know of is -- to move all your TMG projects OUT of user home directories into some directory created on C:\ or other partition... Where the data tends to become globally readable by any account on the computer unless one does tedious operations to change access permissions.
I remember reading about the problems resulting from syncing TMG with MS's onedrive. I find that onedrive has changed all my file preferences, and when changed them back onedrive overrode my changes. Can anyone advise me on how to stop onedrive from interfering? Ken Wood
Hi Jim, Lee has described how to change the Place Style on existing entries in the Master Place List (MPL) which will change it for all tags which use that MPL entry, and David has cautioned to always Optimize after making MPL changes. Place Styles can be confusing, and thus I have a lengthy "Place Styles" section of the Data Entry Chapter in my on-line book. https://www.mjh-nm.net/DATENTRY.HTML#PlaceStyles What is often confusing to users about Place Styles is: "A place Style is not stored as part of the definition of each tag. All tags simply link to a place entry in the MPL which has a single unique Style associated with that place entry. However, a new place entry can only be created as part of the definition of a tag or Repository." In addition there are a number of warnings in that section about how an existing entry in the MPL can get its Place Style changed, and how a new MPL entry can be created which differs only in the Place Style, as you have seen in your project. For example, the following is an exerpt from that section (see also the footnotes to some of these points): ---------- A defined Style can be applied manually to a specific place entry by directly editing the entry in the MPL, clicking the “Place style” button, and assigning the desired Style. In addition, there are four ways by which a Style is applied to a place entry in the MPL linked from a tag, whether creating a new location or modifying an existing location entry: • Inherit the Style from the default for the project/dataset when a single tag is created, or when the Add Multiple People feature is used which may create multiple tags. • Inherit the Style from the specific Tag Type definition when a single new tag is created, but not when the Tag Type of an existing tag is changed. • Inherit the Style from the ‘Setup’ for the Person Entry window when those tags are created. • Manually clicking the “Place style” button, and assigning the desired Style, when creating a single new tag or editing an existing tag. ----------- Hope this might give you an idea about how all this happened, Michael
And then optimize your database to make the changes throughout. How do I change these places back so they are all (U.S >StandardPlace) ? In all likelihood, you probably did create the Custom Place Style -- though inadvertantly. There are a couple of places where, if you aren't looking, TMG will create a Custom Place Style. In almost all cases, the Custom Style is the same as the Standard Place Style (or a Custom Style that you had created and were using). To correct it, open the Master Place list, find and highlight the problem place that shows the Custom Place Style in use and press [F5] to open the Edit Place screen. Click on the [Edit style] button to open the Master Style List. Hightlight the name of the Style that you want (probably the U.S. Standard) and click on the [Select] button. Click on the [OK] button to close the Edit Place screen. When finished, [Close] the Master Place List. My optimize.log had the following message: * Found 5 same place(s) with different styles. an example of one of the places is: "Baldwin County Georgia( U.S. StandardPlace )" and "Baldwin County Georgia( Addressee, Detail, City, County, State, Country, Postal, Phone, LatLong, Temple )" I have never intentionally created a custom place style, so do not know what happened. Greg, I am glad you had such a positive experience. I am a little surprised at the improvement you described because there was only one performance-related change to the Publish feature, and it would only apply in an unusual situation: a site with one or more subfolders that contain a lot of text files that were not person pages. If your site happened to include one or more of those folders, then the Publish step would be a lot faster, possibly hours faster. But... I think those circumstances are rare. I may contact you off-list because you have piqued my interest. John
Hi all, As an FYI, I solved the 2nd problem I was having by running the GEDCOM file through a BASIC program which eliminated all the lines having the _UID string. John, Just tried the latest version and it completed the publishing step in less than half the time of previous versions (I used to let it run all night!). Thanks! Toby Turner wrote: > Thank so much, John. We all really appreciate your fixing > this bug so promptly. Toby, You're welcome. I should mention that I was on the one who introduced the bug, so perhaps that should temper your appreciation! <g> A couple SS beta testers are FHH customers and so they can test the Publish feature, but given their testing is usually performed on test projects or using options they do not want to use on their own sites, they don't always test the Publish feature. I always test it, but in this case, it was working for me even though it didn't work after being installed on the PC of an end user. The problem had to do with an incompatibility between versions of a third-party component. SS was expecting version Y, but the installer was installing version X. That usually wouldn't matter because slightly-different versions of a third-party component are usually compatible with each other and SS. In this case, they weren't, and that caused a fatal error. Terry Reigel and Chris Sackett helped me get to the bottom of this by testing multiple versions of SS and its installer. Thanks, guys! John
Thank so much, John. We all really appreciate your fixing this bug so promptly. I am particularly glad to be able to publish finally because I'd found a major blunder on my site which I'd fixed and was eager to get the new info online. Regards, Toby
Second Site Version 7.05 is now available. There was a bug in SS v7.04 where the Family History Hosting > Publish command did not work and caused a crash. The Publish command works as expected in v7.05. The newsletter link is here: https://www.secondsite7.com/ssn087.htm Users with a Second Site 7 license can download the installer here: https://www.secondsite7.com/downloads.htm?v=7.05 This is a free upgrade for registered users of Second Site 7. If you are using Second Site 6 or a previous version, you must purchase a license to use Second Site 7: https://www.secondsite7.com/purchases.htm?v=7.05 In November of 2016, I began using new web store software for software license sales. I did not migrate the customer records from the old store to the new store. If your last purchase was prior to November 2016, you will not have an existing customer record in the new store and you'll have to create a new one. If so, when given the choice to either Logon or Register, choose Register. Getting Online If you'd like to publish your site online, please choose Family History Hosting <https://www.familyhistoryhosting.com/> . We'll help you understand and navigate the process of acquiring a domain name and publishing your site. The Publish command in Second Site makes publishing easy, it works exclusively with FHH! Family History Hosting includes long-term hosting plans. Check it out! https://www.FamilyHistoryHosting.com/archiveplans.htm Other Notes You do not have to use the right-click, "Run as Administrator" method to start the installer for this release. You may be warned that the installer is not from a trusted source. You can ignore that warning. If you have any trouble installing, please contact me.

Jean, There is an issue with the Forum that prevents people from registering. It requires the user to respond to a CAPTCHA, but the CAPTCHA that is specified is no longer supported by Google, who hosts it. Bob hasn't yet fixed that. Hello all, I am importing a LDS FamilySearch tree via a RootsMagic7 GEDCOM file into TMG 9. The import is working OK but I get a string of errors that I'm not sure how to handle. Namely: 1) -------------- Warning. This individual is recorded as a child in more than one family record. The relationship tags for this individual and his/her parents should be checked to determine which tags should be marked primary. 921 0 @[email protected] INDI 970 0 @[email protected] INDI ------------ I can find no relationship to these numbers in my TMG database e.g. ID numbers. Could someone help me out in explaining what these numbers mean (column headings?) and how to locate the problem children and fix the problem? 2) TMG imports a "type" GEDCOM with a blank "date" and a "Name/Place" field of Unknown GEDCOM tag: _UID" In the import file every person has a line 1 _UID (followed by a unique but long character string) Is there a way to: a ) avoid importing this entry in the first place (short of deleting every line of it in the GEDCOM) or b) if imported deleting this type (GEDCOM) from each person's data (In BATCH) without going into each person's individual record. or c) assigning the data to an unused field and then batch deleting all the data in that field? BTW: I am a very new user of RootsMagic and GEDCOM files. Thank you in advance for any assistance. Roger Troutman Mansfield Ohio
