While it does not help in how to enter data into TMG, it may give you some ideas as to how the data might look when printed in reports and from there how the TMG entry might work. However, I don't recommend the way it give source citations. <g> A little too complex for me although many historians use this style. Lee
Lately a primary consideration for me is what will happen when I convert my database to a GEDCOM and import it to one of the online services. I make the primary name the “popular” name then enter an alternate name that makes it easy to search in TMG. Another alternate name would be the “correct” British title. I even have an alternate name for “Princes Di” Jim https://holcombegenealogy.com iSent from my iPhone; iTypos, iApologize. > On Sep 25, 2019, at 12:49 PM, Lee Hoffman <[email protected]> wrote: >

A good question. He was baptised as "Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David". Prior to 1917, the British Royal Family did not have a surname. They were members of the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. In 1917, they became the House of Windsor and took the name of Windsor which is essentially their surname now. (This was due to the feelings of discontent with Germany dur to World War I. Edward VIII had a number of titles in his lifetime. He was styled Prince Edward of York from birth until about 1901 when he was styled Prince Edward of Cornwall and York. Then he was invested as Prince Edward of Wales. From 1910 until 1936, he was styled as The Duke opf Cornwall while in Scotland he was was The Duke of Rothesay and still known as the Prince of Wales. Then in 1936, when he bacame king, his full style was "Edward VIII, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, Ireland, and of the British Dominions beyond the Seas, King, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India". Afteer abdication, he was The Prince Edward until he was invested in 1937 as The Duke of Windsor. Now, I am sure the question is how does a user enter this into a TMG project. I suggest using Name-Var Tags with the Given Name being Edward (or all his given names for one Tag) abd the remaining parts of the name as Suffix (if "The" is included, add that as the (or part of the) Prefix or Title). For all Name Tags except the Primary, enter a Date (the first date that he was given that title). I would add the surname Windsor to Name Tags after 1917 and leave the surname blank before. I would also suggest creating one or more Custom Name Styles to help in this. This will help ensure that reports contain exactly what you want. Note also, for any Tag, you can choose the name for a person for that Tag. By default, the selected name will be the Primary Name, but you can choose any other available name. Lee
Umm, the name was changed from "House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha" to "House of Windsor" in 1917 because of WWI and the ensuing anti-German hysteria. Elizabeth II married Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark who before marrying Elizabeth renounced all his princely titles and took the surname Mountbatten--which was also originally German and was changed in 1917 from Battenberg for the same reasons. Andrew, Go to Wikipedia first to get some information about Edward VIII which may include something on your relative. If it doesn't you may need to see a full-length biography of the man. Just google Edward VIII before you go to any libraries. With respect to names: royalty do not use surnames, although the British royal family do use Windsor (as a replacement for Mountbatten) for lesser members of the family. Because I am "blessed" or whatever with a lot of ancestors with titles and no surnames, I developed a specialized format for their names. If you look at Michael J. Hannah's tips you can see one method. I created a special name format which uses no surnames - only Given Names and Suffix. If Edward VIII were someone I wanted to include, I would enter Edward VIII under Given Name and King of England (even if briefly) under suffix. In my index, Edward would sort under Edward, with his title shown. I never use TMG's title because I don't like the way it handles names. For those earlier folk with no titles and no surname, I use another format, but in order to have the Given Name sort property, I have to enter the Given Name as the Surname so the SortSurname forces the right sort order. My public thanks to Michael for helping me solve this pesky sort issue! Regards, Toby Turner www.tobysgenealogy.com
PS. As I don't intend to take it further, I would enter him by what he was called when a young boy. I'm just not certain of "surnames" and "given" names. Thank you Lee and Bruce, very much! The strangest, or the *second* strangest thing happened after I sent my plea for help. When I restarted my computer everything had returned to normal -- except the email I sent to the TMG list and your wonderful two replies are not there. Would you mind, terribly, resending them so I'll have your teachings for my files and for my next panic? Best regards to you both, and to all... Liz
Liz, As Lee said, they are in your App Data/Roaming ... folder by default. Might I suggest when you configure the Backup process, you use the "save as a new configuration", giving it with a recognisable name and step through the wizard ticking every option except Exhibits. Then all future backups use that option rather than the installed ones. That will mean all of your layouts, toolbars etc. will in future be saved (and then restored) in every backup - this saves lots of time and pain when you have to reinstall for some reason in the future. *Bruce Fairhall* On 25-Sep.-19 9:10 am, Liz Heaton Brown wrote: > Greetings!
