Erik, No, Win7 will not be _entirely_ safe even if you keep it off the Internet after support ends. There are other ways to introduce a virus, such as by inserting a flash drive. That's a common way to move data to a device that is isolated from the Internet. > I do have a mouse and keyboard and monitor that works with > Windows 7 ,and also an external drive ,which also works with Win7 > ,but would they not work if I get Win10? If so ,why? They will probably work because the device probably has both a Win7 and a Win10 driver available. If the mouse is very old, it might not be compatible with Win10. If you stick with Win7, and then you replace your mouse in a year, the new mouse may or may not be compatible with Win7. It's very likely it will be compatible, but unless the manufacturer explicitly states that it is compatible with Win7, it might not be. Devices need "drivers" to work. Those drivers are the interface between the hardware and the Windows operating system. Drivers often have coding that is specific to a particular version of Windows. So, the same driver that works for Win7 may or may not work for Win10. That's the usual reason why a device will work with one version of Windows but not with another. John

Erik, I stuck with Win7 on my primary PC until just recently. After a routine (I thought) Windows Update, Win7 was trashed and try as I might, I could not fix it without re-installing the OS and losing the contents of the "C" drive as I did so. I decided if I was going to go through the hassle of re-installing all the programs I use and customizing my Windows configuration, I might as well install Win10 because the end-of-life for Win7 is right around the corner and I planned to switch to Win10 before that anyway. Can you stick with Win7 until end-of-life, or after? Yes, but there are risks and inconveniences. Should you? Hard to answer, but I'll give you my opinion. I do not recommend sticking with Win7 after its end of life, mostly because security updates will stop and that leaves you exposed. A vulnerability might appear one day after Win7 updates end, or never, but you can't predict that. Also, starting relatively soon after official support ends, many hardware manufacturers will stop testing their devices with Win7, and some may have already done so. 3. Hi Dennis, apparently putting in the larger hard drive was enough to annoy Windows, as the only other change up to that time was that I had replaced the fan. I have tried repeatedly to get Windows to recognize that it is, in fact, authorized, but have pretty much given up trying. The lost functions are a bit annoying but have not really stopped me from doing normal work on this laptop--seems to be mainly stuff like less functionality on Searching files, Troubleshooting, and on Task Manager. If I could find another laptop that has pen input AND a bay for a second internal hard drive, I'd consider retiring this laptop (I later damaged the screen and had to replace that, which resulted in some keys no longer working), but the overall design of this particular laptop has been ideal for my purposes. I bought my newer laptop when I wasn't sure I could replace the damaged screen on this one, and while I use it more and more, its lack of a second hard drive is a problem. External hard drives are not the answer for me--too easily dropped, etc. Since this is all OT I'll shut up now! Well, I have no clue as to when Win11 (or whatever) might be forthcoming. But as for not needing to "update Windows again" you can forget that. Win10 get an automatic whether you want it or not update every few months. You can delay the update, but eventually it will update for you. In most cases, it is no big deal. But occasionally, the update will break something in some random program that you use. Fortunately MicroSoft is fairly quick to respond to the worst of these, but it may take some time on other. Lee

    3. Basically, anything that runs on Win7 will run on Win10. The question is really what version of Win10 -- 32-bit or 64-bit. Early software (e.g., TMG v4x) will not run on 64-bit but will run on 32-bit. Other than this difference between 32- & 64-bit is that memory (RAM) is limited for 32-bit to 4GB while 64-bit Win10 is limited to 128G or 528GB depending on whethe it is Win10 Home or Pro. --------- I have W7 64 bit ,and chose 64 bit because it was more memory (RAM) ,and now have 24 GB RAM. I thought that was better than abt 4 which it would have been with 32 bit. As for security of Win7, I would agree that following Microsoft's end of Win7 updates, there will be greater risks for Internet usage. However, that greater risk will not nccur at once.and with reasonable precautions will take some time. The number of Win7 machines is already relatively low and after the end of Microsoft support will be even lower. This will also reduce to some extent the potential victums that hackers will have. So, I would not worry too much about upgrading although it may (or may not) be more advantageous sooner than later. ---------- So ,what do you think I should do?. Wait and continue using Windows 7 as I have done until now ,also after the updates ends?. Would be nice to never need to update Windows again....starting to get tired of all the changes with Windows versions...

    3. What I've done for DNA matches is probably overkill, but I've managed to record all the info I want so far. I've created 3 custom tags, DNA_MATCH, DNA_PATH, and MRCA, plus flags of the same names, because I'm a big user of colors. The citation for the DNA_MATCH tag for the person who actually did the test gives the testing company and the URL of the match info. The DNA_PATH is for the people who are in the line between the tester and the MRCA and the citation is to the tester's tree if there is one (with lowering surety as generations go back) and/or my own research. The MRCA tag is for the couple that is our most recent common ancestor, and I have a "Match" witness, so I can see all the people connected to that MRCA easily. My DNA_Match sentence is, "[P] has a DNA match with me at <[M1]>. MRCA: <[M2]> <and [M3]> <and [M4]> <and [M5]>." M1 is the testing company. I have the MRCA extras because I've some cousins I'm related to in more ways than one. My sentence for DNA_Path is, "[P] is on a DNA path from match(es) <[M1]> to MRCA <[M2]> <and [M3]> <and [M4]>" where M1 is the name of the tester - or a list of names if there are multiple people on the same path. For the MRCA tag, it is "[P] <is a MRCA|and [PO] are MRCAs> for match(es) <[WO]>" and the witness sentence is "[P]<is an MRCA|and [PO] are MRCAs> of match [W]." 3. TMG v4 surely contains 16-bit code (the report writer was the last module to be converted to 32-bit, and that was TMG 7 or 8). The odds are good that you are running a 64-bit OS. 32-bit Windows can run 16-bit code 64-bit Windows can run 32-bit code 64-bit Windows CAN NOT run 16-bit code ---------------- Yes ,I am running Windows 7 64 bit now ,and that must of course be the reason TMG 4 doesn`t work on 64 bit. Any way of running a 16 bit code on a 64 bit system? An emulator maybe? DosBox works on 64 bit and let me run old Dos programs....
