    1. Re: [TMG] Duplicate people
    2. Linda M. Towne via
    3. In the picklist, all of the different name variations will show up unless you specify primary name only (the ones with an *). They aren't different (duplicate) people unless they have different ID numbers. So if the primary name is Jennifer Amy Doe but she married two times and has married names of Jennifer Smith and Jennifer Jones and perhaps you've entered a nickname of "Buffy" Doe - then Jennifer Amy Doe will have the * but all four names will show in the picklist. You can get rid of the duplication in the picklist by ticking primary names only on the filter but personally, I like having the different name variations show up because it makes it more likely I will find the person I'm looking for rather than think they aren't in the database because I'm looking for them under a different name. But, I don't know why you would want this. The Ahnentafel report is designed to show the person and his/her details followed in the next paragraph by the person's parent, then that person's parent, etc. depending on the number of generations. This would be like creating a Pedigree Chart with the parents' name in each box -- it's redundant. >2. First of all, I know that we can't send charts in as I did over 5 >years ago. Why not create the chart to Visual ChartForm and then File=>Export the chart to JPG or BMP format? Most Kinkos and other printers can handle JPG and/or BMP as input to their plotters. They may even be abl;e to handle EMF files. I'd just call and ask their preference. Lee

    3. Nancy, For question 2. When in VCF did you choose the kind of page you wanted and not try to use an 8.5 x 11 sheet? Margins are the distances from the right and left of the page at which printing begins. Did your margins exceed the size of the paper? A 25 inch margin is huge and is larger than any but the custom sheet! You would probably want to use a C0, C1, or C2 size for printing at Staples. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paper_size#C_series Ed Feustel On 2016-07-27 08:58, Nancy A via wrote: > I have a list of questions and sure the Archives probably hold some of > the answers, but every time I try to access it, it gives me an error. > So here goes with the questions. > > 1. But I can't get the margins to reset. Would this have something to do with printer specified in TMG 9.005? I have tried changing the page setup to _landscape_, _user defined_ with no luck. This morning I can't even get it to change to landscape, letter, tray 1, so I am going downhill. I looked at Terry's hints, even printing them out and reading several times and also looked at the book and nothing gives me a clue about changing my margins. I would like to set the margin to about 25" width and see what I can do within that process. So hopefully someone can figure out what is wrong with the Archives, let me know if I can fix the Name tag and remind me of what I am doing wrong on the charts. I will thank you in advance as I do appreciate all of the help I have received in the past. Nancy in New Mexico

    2. Cheryl Freeman via
    3. Figured out my problem with a bit of help from GMOOTMG. Thanks Lee, and team :) The problem was that I was running the DIN on a filtered group of descendants of the progenitor, rather than on the progenitor, so I got a separate report for every person. Should have seen that last night, but it was late :( All's good now, no need for help. Cheryl -----Original Message----- From: tmg-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:tmg-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Cheryl Freeman via Sent: Monday, July 25, 2016 12:37 AM To: tmg@rootsweb.com Subject: [TMG] Descendent Indented Narrative report Issue I am having a strange problem that I hope I can explain sufficiently. I am getting ready to update my Second Site website, and running Descendant Narrative Reports by earliest known ancestor to select which individuals to include. I am running the fifth in this series of reports. The first 4 were exactly what I wanted and the fifth is really ... hosed. My filter is simply: Is a descendant of ID 1646 [END]. The only tag I am using is the marriage tag, so that the spouse's name appears next to the name of the person. On the first reports I ran, I got the hierarchical "tree" by generation that I expected. On this report, here is what I am seeing: All the names appear in alphabetical order, as individual entries. There is a page break after each individual (if no issue). If an individual has issue, they are listed in the indented format I would expect, to the end of that line, followed by a page break. Then the next alphabetical person appears. <snip>

What have I "broken" and how can I get a DIN for my >end of line person that simply shows his descendants (with their spouses on >the marriage tags). Let me understand things a bit better. You are running the Descendants Indented Narrative report, right? This report is designed to have a unique individual as its subject. Thus, if you are using a filter, all you need is: ID number = Equals 1646 END and on the [Options...] window General tab, select the Number of generations you want. Actually, you don;t need the filter, just select the person as the Subject and set the Number of generations. With the filter you have been using, it starts with person #1646's first descendant, creates that narrative; then selects the next descendant and runs that narrative; then the next; and the next, etc. So you are creating a multitude of reports with your filter. 1. [TMG] images randomly attaching to sources
    2. Karla Huebner via
    3. Yesterday I encountered something quite unexpected when I ran a Second Site make-site on my TMG data. Some of the sources suddenly showed as having images. At first I thought this must relate to data I had imported from my brother's Ancestry-to-FTM work, as that had indeed brought a lot of census and other images into my database. However, a look at a few of the images showed that they had nothing whatsoever to do with the sources in question. There were census pages connected to the IGI, for example. Here's the page where I discovered this: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~huebnerlamb/p2.htm#i84 --the IGI is cited several times since this ancestor was discovered early in my research, and there aren't even the same number of images per citation. When I went to look at TMG and see if I had images attached to sources, exactly two showed, one of which had the frowny-face of Not Found. I tried running VFI with the find image feature enabled (usually I don't select that), and it ran endlessly, finally freezing TMG after finding a total of 65 images (I don't know how many it ought to find, but certainly more than that--VFI was at 3% when TMG froze). I waited a long time and finally used Task Manager to close TMG. I then restarted TMG and did maintenance without looking for images. VFI claimed to fix over 30,000 possible errors (!) although it hadn't been very long since I had last run it and found none. I haven't run it looking for images again yet, though. What might be causing this? Karla Karla Huebner calypsospots AT gmail.com

Then as the report generates, I get the message that it is generating the narrative for 710 people (because of the multiple redundancies). The report, with one tag, is 145 pages, because everyone's on a new page. I have run VFI with no problems found. I've run optimize, and closed and reopened the program. The ununstall will not remove your data although I suggest making sure you have a backup of your project(s) just in case. Be sure that you have your serial number to enter when you re-install (and use the e-mail address that your first used in case that has changed). You noted that you have the CD for v9.04 which is fine if you have not upgraded to v9.05. If you have upgrade to v9.05, do you have a copy of the upgrade? If so, just use that to re-install. I also have the MSVCR71.dll and other files that start with "MSV" all over my computer but I still get the same message whether I try to install from the CD or just try to start the program from the file or the icon on the desktop. I have now uninstalled the program, Lee, but I still get the same messages when I try to reinstall from the CD or from the installation program I have just downloaded. I am not sure of the actual version of 9.xx that I had installed as I have been unable to run my program to find out. The CD and my previously downloaded version of TMG both say just tmg9install.exe. My memory is that I had originally installed every update that we were ever given. I have a complete backup of my computer on disk from about 2 months ago. I may have to resort to using it. I have never had to do a restore before and I am quite hesitant in case I lose something else in the transition. Does anyone have any ideas on a reinstall from backup? And thank you to everyone who has given me ideas - its good to not feel alone in this.
