    3. Well, I'm sinking in the mud.<G> I've spent the day trying to use the two URL's you gave, Lee, and both simply said: Error 404. I think I have 9.5 on Dropbox - but I'd put it on the desktop so it wouldn't come up in Windows. Now I can't get Safari (Mac) to work and can't find Dropbox on Windows. I'm hoping my daughter can straighten it out in the morning or I'll have to call the Geek Squad again. Is it possible that those URL's are no longer working? 1. [TMG] Multiple-disk GEDCOM Errors
    2. George Dyer
    3. I am trying to import a GEDCOM file from TMG 9.04 to both Legacy and RootsMagic. My GEDCOM export is about 9400 individuals. I am using a Dell XPS 8900, 16 GB, 1.5 TB, Win 10. For Legacy I get: "Is this is a multiple-disk GEDCOM file?" For RootsMagic I get: "There is more data on another disk. Insert the disk.." Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Sorry, that page no longer works. A better choice is to download the US or UK full installer program from one of these links: TMG 9.05 USA Version http://www.whollygenes.com/files/tmg9setup.exe TMG 9.05 UK Version http://www.whollygenes.com/files/tmg9uksetup.exe Clicking on a link will ask if you want to open the file or save it. You should select to save the file to a location on your system. Then double-click on the file after the download is finished. This open the installer and begins the installation. You should tell the installer to install the program in the same place that an earlier v9 version is already installed. This will overwrite the installation with the v9.05 version while leaving your data alone. After v9.05 is installed, you should be able to open (or restore and open) your v9.05 projects. If you happen to restore a project from an earlier version, v9.05 will upgrade it at the time. Lee

I moved thsoe from the thumb drive to the desktop. Tho they all are listed in the file I get the same messages for all of them. I believe this has come up before and I apologize for not having saved the answers. Would someone be so kind as to help me restore them? Thanks so much Carol

    1. [TMG] Second Site on Windows Phone
    2. JEH
    3. I can't get a Second Site website to open on my Windows phone (Nokia Lumina 635) I have a Second Site site on my desktop computer which works fine. I transferred the entire site to my Android tablet and this also works as expected. However when I transferred the same file structure to my Windows phone the site fails to load. I use the File app to navigate to the folder containing index.htm, tap, IE opens and a screen appears stating Action was cancelled. We couldn't open the page it may be temporarily unavailable. If I navigate to the /site folder and tap i1.htm the file opens with and index of names. If I tap one of these I get same error message. One strange thing. If I connect the phone to my computer and use File Explorer navigate to the index file and double click then my browser opens at my normal home page (Google), and the same happens if I navigate to \site\i1.htm. The PJC file is basically a text file containing certain information essential to opening the project. It is organized in a certain way, and if some information is missing then the project will not open. Another possibility is that one of the other project files is corrupt or missing although usually there is a different message in that case. The best solution is what you are trying -- do another Restore. When you get the message about overwriting, answer yes to that. Lee

    3. Here's what I would do, step by step: 1. Start with an empty focus group. Click "Add Individual," select your wife, and add her. 2. Check the "Ancestors" box only and click "Add Others." 3. I'm a little unclear about whether you're looking for the descendants of all of your wife's ancestors or just some of them. If you want only some of them, select the ones you don't want and click "Remove Selected." 4. Uncheck the "Ancestors" box, check the "Descendants" box, and click "Select All." Then click "Add Others." 5. Uncheck the "Descendants" box, check the "Spouses" box, and click "Select All." Then click "Add Others." 6. If you have name variations you'd like to add, uncheck the "Spouses" box, check the "Name variations" box, and click "Select All." Then click "Add Others." 7. Go to File|Export and run the Export Wizard. In Step 4, make sure you select "People in the Focus Group." When the Export Wizard competes, you should have a GEDCOM containing just your wife's portion of the project. I hope this is helpful. 3. If I'm understanding correctly, you want a complete subset of your wife's ancestors and all their descendants and spouses. The way I've done this is as follows (must be done in this order): 1. Create a focus group, adding just your wife. 2. Check the Ancestors and Descendants boxes, using the default 250 generations. (Do not check the spouses button just yet). Click the Add Others button. This adds all of her direct-line ancestors and descendants. 3. Click the Select All button to highlight every person in the focus group. Then check the Descendants box only (all other boxes unchecked). Click the Add Others button. This adds all descendants of everyone in the focus group, which should include all siblings and cousins. 4. Click the Select All button. Then check the Spouses box, making sure all other boxes are unchecked. Click the Add Others button. This adds the spouses of everyone on the list. 5. If you want to add additional spouses of the spouses, do step 4 again. 6. If you want to add parents of the spouses, you can click the Select All button again. Then check the Ancestors box only (all others unchecked), and change the number of generations to 1. Then click the Add Others button. In a large project, you may need to wait awhile for TMG to gather all these people, but hopefully it will finally finish. In my smallish project of about 10,000 people, it only took a few minutes to load my 1200 or so "half" into a focus group. Then at that point you can save the focus group, or create a gedcom, or populate a flag to make it easier to select these people again later, etc. I hope this works for you. Joyce Rivette Rivette Family Genealogy http://www.rivettefamily.com Note: What this does NOT add are step-children of other spouses, or other non-related individuals that might be attached to other tags. Does anyone know? Ann, SS does not have a minimum image size. It's up to you. For images displayed by a web browser, DPI doesn't matter. The key measure is the number of pixels. Any image that is wider than the current browser window will require the visitor to scroll the browser window horizontally to see the portion of the image that is not visible, and you typically want to avoid that. For that reason, don't exceed the width of the average monitor for linked exhibits (exhibits that are shown on a dedicated page in SS). For embedded exhibits, such as the primary image for a person, you often want to use something fairly narrow, perhaps two or three hundred pixels. See these help pages for information about exhibits: http://ss.johncardinal.com/exhibits.htm http://ss.johncardinal.com/secexhibits.htm > It looks as though I'll have to work through these PNGs one by one as > they're all different sizes. 450+ TMG Utility has the Export Images feature which you can use to make resized copies of TMG exhibits. Those can be placed in a special folder so that SS will use the resized versions while leaving the full size versions intact. See: http://www.johncardinal.com/tmgutil/exportimages.htm and http://ss.johncardinal.com/secexhibits.htm#alternateimagefolder > I don't understand why tiffs download rather than open on screen in SS. SS is following the rules of HTML. There are dozens if not hundreds of image file formats, but the HTML specifications only designate three as being eligible to be embedded on a web page: JPEG, PNG, and GIF. For those types, SS will create an IMG tag so that the image appears on the page. Any other image file types are not valid for use with the IMG tag, so SS creates a link to the image file. It's up to the browser to determine how to handle the link, and most browsers will download the resulting file and open it using whatever application it thinks is best. Don't know if it is what you need but you can decide by looking at this link: http://ottawa-tmg-ug.ca/Docs/Creating%20a%20Subset%20from%20a%20TMG%20Project.pdf Ron Chénier http://chesnay.homestead.com/ http://www.bertrandchesnayfrancais.homestead.com -----Original Message----- From: TMG [mailto:tmg-bounces+ronchenier=rogers.com@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of John and Lee Wood Sent: August 13, 2016 4:24 PM To: TMG Subject: [TMG] Making a Copy of a Portion of a Project I have lumped both my Wood and my wife’s Gray families into one project containing one data set. This arrangement works fine most of the time. However, I have promised to send a GedCom of just the Gray family ancestry to my wife’s cousin, so I’d like to create a separate project (or maybe a separate data set?) containing only my wife’s Gray family genealogy. The matter is complicated by her descent from siblings in many different families. I assume that the way to do this is to create a focus group containing just the Gray family, which I did. However, the focus group I created contained only the direct ancestors, spouses and descendants of the targeted individual. That’s fine as far as it goes but, I also want the siblings of the targeted individual to be included. In other words, I want a complete copy of just my wife’s portion of my project. Making a copy of my project and deleting my ancestors would work, except for the fact that we share many of the same ancestors. Any suggestions? What about the > parents' and grandparents' siblings, and so on up the lines? John, You are giving conflicting information about who you want to include. You said you wanted the siblings of the target person. Now you want to add parents and grandparents of them. Aren't they the same as the parents and grandparents of the target person? Just who do you mean by "complete family? Everyone related by blood or marriage, including cousins no matter how distant? Or some limited set? Once you are clear on who you want to include you can easily do that by using the Add Others feature of the Focus Group. All of which does not require creating a copy of the project or a separate data set - just export the people you have gathered in the Focus Group. Terry Reigel

It sounds like what you are wanting is the most distant ancestor in that line and all descendants. So, with a cleared Focus Group, add that most distant ancestor and then in the Add Others box, add the descendants for the desired number of generations. You will need to highlight the person(s) in the Focus Group for which you want the Add Others to act on. You may want top Add Others a generation at a time and then delete some of the added persons if they are not wanted. Of course, just highlighting certain persons to act on can also limit who gets added. Lee

It would have to include the complete families of each generation. John
