    1. Re: [TMG] Pedigree Chart names

    3. Teresa, I tried to replicate your issue and found that if I added NameNick as an alias for Label 2 (Prefix) with an output template of [Title] [NameNick] [GivenName] [Surname] [Suffix] I get the same result as you in the form of Reverend J Doe if "Reverend" is in the Title field of the primary name tag. But if "Reverend" is in the NameNick field the full given name in the form of Reverend John J. Doe is output in the report. I also tried adding NameNick as an alias for Label 7 (OtherName) and got the same result. As Lee suggested, shortening "Reverend" to "Rev." allows the full given name to be output in the report even when entered into the Title field. So it would seem that there is something special about the Title field that causes it to interfere with the given name field when both are combined in the limited-length name entries of the Pedigree Chart. The Prefix and OtherName fields, and perhaps others, do not cause this interference if the NameNick field is created from them. The Journal Report does not have this issue. 3. Lee, I will try, but why does it print fine if I move that to NickName field? I corrected the name and there was plenty of room on the line for it. So TMG is shortening the name if the Title field is used. 3. I use a custom Nick Name tag for all my people: The output template is: [Title] [GivenName] [NameNick] [Surname] [Suffix] If I set the name to Title, GivenName, Surname, I get Title, first initial and surname. If I put the Title in the Nick Name field, I get GivenName, NameNick, Surname. What I would like to print is: Reverand John J. Doe Instead I can get John J. Reverand Doe. Any one know why when I use a Title, it shortens the GivenName to just an intial?

    3. I use a custom NIck Name template for everyone in my database. The output template is: [Title] [GivenName] [NameNick] [Surname] [Suffix] If I put a name in the Title field on the Pedigree chart, I am only getting TITLE and SURNAME I thought it might be an issue with how long the name was, but I have other names that are longer, and they simply word wrap. Why doesn't this person's name word wrap and how can I get TMG to use the complete name with Title on the Pedigree chart?

    3. Carol, I'm afraid I don't understand what the problem can be at your end. However, I did just try the same download link again just now for the TMG Setup file: http://www.whollygenes.com/files/tmg9setup.exe and it worked just fine. Do you have an email client which allows you to just click on that link? Barring that, just select it, copy it, and paste it into your browser. There are basically five locations in which TMG files may be located based on a default installation. Three of these are controlled by the user based on information found in the TMG Help topic "Data File Storage" (and related topics). The program files themselves are placed in the TMG folder of the system folder "Program Files". Then there is the folder "Program Data" which may have two sub-folders related to TMG. One of these is TMG Installation and contains the installation program file and the installation log. The other sub folder in the Program Data folder is what "Data File Storage" calls "Shared Program Data" (SPD). These files are used by the program and mostly controlled from within TMG (TMG Help files, dictionary files, languages, etc.). There is also a folder of "User Program Data" (UPD) found in the AppData/Roaming folder of your User's folder. This is mainly data files related to how you (the user) configure TMG. Each user on a computer has this folder and thus each may configure TMG differently without affecting other users. Finally there is the TMG "User Data" (UD) folder located in the Documents folder. Mostly, this is your data. It contains about ten sub-folders including your project(s), backups, Exhibits, report configurations, reports, and more. As noted, you pretty much have full control of where TMG is installed as described in the TMG Help. When the program is installed, the program files are installed and certain other files. Then, when TMG is first started, TMG sets up other files. If you have followed the instructions in TMG Help "Data File Storage" and created a small text file which TMG sees on the first start-up after installation then TMG locates the SPD, UPD, and UD folders/files according to the small text file. There is more to this than I have said, but this is the nutshell. Lee

    1. [TMG] I cannot do a backup on myTMG files. HELP!!!
    2. Nancy Lawson
    3. I was having severe computer problems, so I copied my last backup for each project to a thumb drive. In addition my computer tech copied all my files to a secondary system, then scrubbed the hard drive, rebuilt the entire computer system, adding the latest version of Windows 10. When I got the computer back, I reinstalled TMG 9 and a few other programs. Because my Tech had reloaded all my data files to the newly built system, I was able to simply open TMG and continue my input as normal with a couple of exceptions. 1. Every time I open a project, I receive a TMG error message: "Exhibit folder "C:\Users\Nancy\Documents\The Master Genealogist V9\Exhibits\" was not found. Do you want to use default Exhibit folder?" I say yes, the system proceeds to open as normal and all the Exhibits are there. (EVERY TIME) 2. When I close the project by clicking on the X in upper right hand corner, I get the usual TMG message "Would you like to back up the C:\Users\Nancy Lawson\Documents\The Master Genealogist V9\Projects\XXXXX__.PJC now?" and I answer with the YES box. On the Wizard, I select "Backup All (project + customizations)", select NEXT. On "Step 2: Data" I select FINISH (leaving all the project names as indicated). The system jumps to the next screen (Step 8) and I receive a TMG error message: "Input file read failure - This error occurs when a file read operation is performed on a ZIP file that is locked or restricted by another process." I click OK, the Step 8 message immediately disappears and I receive the TMG error message: Backup to C:\Users\Nancy\Documents\The Master Genealogist V9\Backups\XXXXX file 2016-08-29 17-42-57.sqz is complete. I click on the OK and TMG goes away. 3. I go into my Documents, open The Master Genealogist V9, click on BACKUPS and the last backup completed is the ones done prior to my machine being scrubbed. 4. If I close the project by going to FILE, CLOSE PROJECT, the project simply closes. Even when the Prompt next time is still checked. What does that mean??? I can't find anything in the HELP to help me.. In desperation: I have reloaded the TMG V9 program, both as an overlay and as a repair, NO CHANGE.. I made a GEDCOM and loaded it onto Legacy 8 (which I loaded onto system from a purchased disc and Norton said Legacy had a malware imbedded. which I was able to work around saying it is a trusted site. and Norton then let me load it, but Norton did stop a malware anyway.) Legacy seems to be working ok, but I want to use TMG. I am afraid to rename my file in Step 8 to see if that works. Tried that option also, still didn't work. All help is greatly appreciated. Nancy

    1. [TMG] XP problems
    2. Carol Collins
    3. Well - I'm in a worse jam than I was before. I 've had James, from Geek Squad, in twice now and we're going backwards. He installed Windows 7, the exe file of TMG (all three of them actually) and all had reverted to 9.1. I know I had downloaded .5 but it's not to be found. I went to the whoolygenes.com/download file and it gave me a 404. (James tried it too, with same results). So r=we reverted back to XP, where TMG 9.5 was still in residence - except all of the projects are gone...where??? I can find the projects but don't know how to install them into the program. Is it possible? All of this is on the desktop (which i prefer) but I still have it correct on the laptop (I'm afraid to touch it with all the nonsense going on). Is there a way to put it all back together again? I'd appreciate all help! Carol

    1. Re: [TMG] New operating system
    2. John Cordes
    3. Carol, I just left-clicked on the USA link which Lee provided. It took a minute or so, but the tmg setup .exe file was downloaded. So the link is definitely valid. I think I have 9.5 on Dropbox - but I'd put it on the desktop so it wouldn't come up in Windows. Now I can't get Safari (Mac) to work and can't find Dropbox on Windows. I'm hoping my daughter can straighten it out in the morning or I'll have to call the Geek Squad again. Is it possible that those URL's are no longer working? Thanks so much for your explicit instructions -- I really appreciate your help.
