As John suggested, open one tag for one person, such as the Birth tag for James Robert Wilson (926). You already confirmed that in the top left of the Tag Entry window his role is "Principal". Now click on the "Sentence" button at the bottom left of this window. What does that sentence template show? It should be: [P] was born <[D]> <[L]> But based on your output I suspect it will read: [W] witnessed the birth of [P1] <and [P2]> <[D]> <[L]> If my suspicions are correct, report back. Not sure how you got into this situation, but if this is the case we can probably correct it. > I am using V9 without the last update... > Would it be beneficial to apply the latest update? Yes, it would Diane. Since you have already paid for V9, you might as well get the benefit of the final fixes and features. > If so can you please advise how I can obtain this > as I understand the link on the forum page does not work. 3. Diane, You should update to 9.05, but not right now. We don't know what the problem is, and trying solutions without knowing the problem is a last resort. In my last message, I asked you two basic questions: 1 - Is the subject attached to the event as a principal or a witness? ... 2 - Is the subject's role correct? ... You didn't answer explicitly. You wrote, "The person's role was Principal", and that answers #2, but doesn't answer #1. I will assume that the subject is attached to the event in one of the principal slots. You also reported on multiple events, "for birth marriage and death tags." Please don't do that when responding to this message. As I wrote before, start by investigating a _single_ tag. Our communication will be efficient if you do so, and inefficient otherwise. So... Pick a person, then pick a single tag where the output is not correct. I suggest you pick a birth tag because a tag with a single principal will be easier to debug. Double-click the tag to open it in the Tag Entry window. Click the [Sentence] button. You should see something like this: Sentence structure: (Default) : [P] was born <[D]> <[L]> Please answer these questions: 1 - Does the heading about the sentence textbox show the text above, including "(Default)", or does it say "(Custom)"? Please answer "Default" or "Custom". 2 - What is the sentence? Please copy and paste the sentence text into your reply. Please answer both questions explicitly. I do a lot of email-based tech support and the biggest challenge is gathering information. If I could see your PC, this problem would be solved already. Unfortunately, I can't see it, so I ask questions to gather the information I need. John

    3. Diane, If your friends were able to import successfully from that same gedcom file, I suggest you just have one of them make a backup and send that back to you to use. While that doesn't explain what happened in your own import process (other than that it's in your import rather than in your gedcom creation), it should give you a usable project. Re updating, yes, do, but I don't have the URL handy. 3. Hi John I have done what you suggested to no avail. The person's role was Principal as it should be for birth marriage and death tags. I still get the same output. I am using V9 without the last update. I emailed the same gedcom to my friend who has the latest version and she made a new project using this gedcom and the report was fine. Another friend in Melbourne has also tried this and it worked perfectly for him as well. I have performed all the maintenance runs as well. Would it be beneficial to apply the latest update? If so can you please advise how I can obtain this as I understand the link on the forum page does not work. Thanks Diane

    3. Michael J Hannah wrote: > I admit I had not realized this special behavior of these two source > elements. I will update my on-line book to reflect this testing. Well, further testing shows these two (and several other) source elements have "interesting" behaviors when unconditional but empty. I "think" I have now tested all combination of conditions, and have updated the Source Elements chapter of my book accordingly. See: http://www.mjh-nm.net/SRCELEMS.HTM Under "Short Title" in that chapter there is now the comment: http://www.mjh-nm.net/SRCELEMS.HTML#ShortTitle If this element is unconditional but no text is entered, you may not get the “unknown” text. If there is text entered in a Title element, TMG will automatically construct a Short Title by possibly shortening/truncating the text of the Title and deleting short words like “a” and “the”. If there is also no text in the Title, then both the Title and Short Title will output their appropriate “unknown” text. Under "Short Subtitle" in that chapter there is now the comment: http://www.mjh-nm.net/SRCELEMS.HTML#ShortSubtitle If this element is unconditional but no text is entered, you may not get the “unknown” text. If there is text entered in a Subtitle element nothing will be output, which may cause strange output. A shortened Subtitle will not be constructed. If there is also no text in the Subtitle, then both the Subtitle and Short Subtitle will output their appropriate “unknown” text. Thank you Jim Slade for asking this question. It certainly led to some interesting observations. Michael

    3. Maybe someone has an idea how to solve my new problem. After doing what I do every so often (File, Maintenance, Optimize, Reindex, and, Validate File Integrity) I now have a problem. A code shows up. The code is "BYSEQ" 51 Replish and it states Abort, Retry, Ignore After hitting several of the keys, sometimes I can continue but most of the time I just repeat my efforts and it will work until my next go to, search, etc. Is there a way to continue with TMG Thanks, Lyle

    3. As a follow-on to this issue (in case anyone was wondering) Short Subtitle does not operate the same as Short Title. Testing shows that a shortened Subtitle is not constructed by TMG. If unconditional and no text is entered, nothing is output, not even some "unknown" text, which may cause strange output. For this reason I recommend always using the Short Subtitle element as conditional in any template. I admit I had not realized this special behavior of these two source elements. I will update my on-line book to reflect this testing. Michael

    3. Jim Slade wondered: > In the event that the Short Title is same as Title in the > Source definition, can the Short Title box be left blank? > When left blank, will it print same as Title ? > or will it print as a blank? Hi Jim, Lee described how TMG tries to "help" you in these circumstances. His comments are correct, but TMG is a bit more sophisticated than that. First, what outputs depends upon whether the Short Title element is conditional or unconditional, e.g. whether you have bracketed it within whatever template it occurs as <SHORT TITLE>. If it is conditional, then if you do not enter any text in that separate field nothing will be output for that conditional element, even if the TITLE field has text. If you are likely to have both elements the same, then only entering a Title and making the Short Title conditional will prevent any Short Title output. If it is unconditional, then if you do not enter anything in that separate field TMG will try to "help" you by constructing a shortened version. I don't know the exact method used, but it involves shortening to some maximum length, *plus* dropping short adjectives like "a" "the" etc. For example the following will occur: Title: This is the title, with no short title entered, and long enough so that shortening will occur Short Title created by TMG (notice "the" is removed): This is title, with If the Short Title element is unconditional in any template and you do not enter text, I highly recommend doing Previews on the Output form tab to see what you get. If what TMG does is fine, okay. But if not, you can always enter the text you want in that element. Finally, if you actually enter text in the Short Title, it will output all you enter (to some very large max number of characters). TMG will not try to shorten it. Hope this gives you ideas, Michael

Since at least version 4, if the filed is left blank, the entry in thge Title field is truncated and used for the Short Title. The truncation is at about 15-18 characters which may or may not be satisfactory in all cases. I think TMG tries to truncates at a space rather than within a word. So, a Title like: History of Cass and Bates Counties, Missouri will truncate to History of Cass I usually use whatever I enter as the Abbreviation for the Source Definition as my Short Title. That way I cna just copy/paste the entry. This way I don;t have to concern myself as to whether the truncation is okay. Lee

    3. If you leave it blank, it'll be left blank in the citation output. I do it either way, depending on how I'm using the source. If you want them to be the same, just copy the Title to Short Title. I usually keep them both for the flexibility, but sometimes have removed Short Title when I know I'll never use it for a particular source type. 1. Re: [TMG] Unwanted Witness Sentences (was Descendant Box Chart)
    2. John Cardinal
    3. I agree with Karla. The evidence suggests the report is using the witness sentence for events where the subject is a principal. I'd start by investigating a single tag. Choose a person--I'll call that person the subject--and then choose a single event where the subject should be a principal but a witness sentence is being used in the report output. A Birth tag is a good candidate. Edit that tag, and then answer these questions: 1 - Is the subject attached to the event as a principal or a witness? If the subject is a principal, the subject's ID number will be in one of the two slots in the Edit Tag window, P1 or P2. If the subject is a witness, the subject's ID name and ID number will appear in the witness list in the Edit Tag window. My guess is that the subject will be a principal. 2 - Is the subject's role correct? It should probably be "Principal", or perhaps another role intended for a principal. It should NOT be "Witness", or any other role intended for a witness. My guess is that the role will not be correct. IMPORTANT NOTE: The role may look correct in the Edit Tag window even though the actual data is not. For example, if the person has an invalid role in the database record, the Edit Tag window may show "Principal". If 1 and 2 look correct, press [OK] to save the tag and then run the report for just the subject. If the output is correct for the tag in question, then editing the tag and pressing [OK] has fixed the problem. Stop at this point and report back what you found. John

    3. I don't think that in this case it would be helpful to suppress output of Witness sentences, because at a glance it appears that these people are outputting (vile word!) as witnesses to their own births, baptisms, marriages, deaths, etc. I'm not sure what the answer here is, as when my brother created a big tree on Ancestry and we sync'd it with Family Tree Maker and then exported to Gedcom, we did not have this problem. There was cleanup to do in TMG, but nothing like this. Perhaps the question is, how did Diane create the Gedcom? Maybe redoing the Gedcom with different parameters would solve the problem.
