Ron, I am curious why TMG Utility did not indicate that the exhibit in question was missing. If the name on disk did not agree with the name stored in the TMG record, then TMGU should have reported that an exhibit was not found. Was that not the case? John

    3. Sometimes I find the "missing exhibit" problem is caused by my own action, that of renaming or moving a file. I try to name my image files consistently, but occasionally make a typo --- when I later notice and fix the typo in the filename, it becomes "lost" to TMG unless I go back to the tag where it was attached and reload it, using the new file name/location. 3. Good morning everyone, I'm hoping someone on the list can help me. After making some recent updates to my data I did my regular optimize and VFI before closing the database. As part of the VFI, I included checking for missing exhibits in the root and subdirectories. During the last check the VFI log indicate the following file was missing. t:\Pics\Gerhart\Certificates\Birth\Birth_Certificate_-_Laura Preston_Henry_Gerhart.jpg I have taken the following steps to find the missing file. 1. Checked the directory indicated in the path but I'm not able to find the file indicated. 2. Searched my hard drive where my pictures are stored no file by this name is able to be located. 3. Checked the persons indicated in the path but no file with this name appears to be attached to either one of the people (Laura or Preston Henry Gerhart) 4. Opened the exhibit log and checked all exhibits for the "frowny face" which I have set to indicate missing exhibits. 5. Using John Cardinals TMG utility I have check for missing exhibits and prepared a report of the directories checked to look for the potential missing file. Does anyone have any ideas on what to do next. Family Researcher research@stonehouse.ca<mailto:research@stonehouse.ca> www.stonehouse.ca/tree<http://www.stonehouse.ca/>

You say you have saved it to "a thumb drive, to Dropbox, ... my cloud service". But where is the backup .SQZ file when you actually do the restore? As a general practice you must copy or download the backup .SQZ file to the hard drive of the computer where you are restoring. Then when in TMG find that file on that computer's hard drive and restore it. If that is not the issue, then please provide more details. Michael

This may or may not matter, but mentioning it in case. Meanwhile purchased new, from mfgr, laptop - Win 10. I planned to dedicate the older laptop to genealogy, so did not make many entries on the new computer once I got TMG 9 installed. Now I can not transfer the current project. I saved it to a thumb drive, to Dropbox, it's backed up on my cloud service. When I go to the older laptop and ask to restore I get the OLE messages which includes the restore wizard line. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance JoAnn

As expected, based on the Help page. > - If the [CD] doesn't change, but the [CM] does change, the Full > Footnote template is used. Not as expected, based on the Help page. Agreed. I believe the lead sentence in the Help paragraph is basing the whole design of unique endnotes on: "... print each source only once." Said another way, based on the rest of that paragraph in Help I believe the "intent" is that a given TMG source record should only use the Full Footnote template once: the first time that source is cited. That would match the concept of printing the [unique] source only once. All subsequent "different" endnotes for that "unique" source ("different" [CD1] and/or [CM1]) should use the Short Footnote. Now that I read it more carefully I agree with your interpretation. But as your testing has shown, that is not the way TMG is behaving. > This seems to me like either a (minor) bug in TMG, or an error in > the Help page text. But of course neither will now ever be changed... Exactly. Note that TMG has never included a default Source Definition which has included [CM] in its default templates. Thus I would guess the behaviour of different CMs was never tested. > I'd hope this is a bug. Yes, I think that this is a bug, because I think the implementation does not match the intended design. I can't believe the output based on different CMs was intended to be different than the output based on different CDs. I think output for both cases should be the same. Thanks, Charlie, for pointing this out and testing it. [No thanks to the work I now have to do because of it <sigh>]. I will add this to my list of Outstanding Bugs, and will update the description of the actual behaviour of unique endnotes in my book and reference this bug. Michael

Maybe we're not understanding each other. I don't think I'm misinterpreting it, I just think it's wrong. It says (and your on-line book section on "Ibid and Unique Endnotes" says exactly the same thing): "If multiple citations for the same source but different [CD1]s and/or [CM1]s occur, then the first unique endnote uses the Full Footnote template, and the Short Footnote template is used for the second and subsequent unique endnotes for that same source." Note the "or" part of the "and/or" in the above. Grammatically, doesn't the above mean that (1) the first citation of a particular source will use the Full Footnote template; (2) subsequent citations of the same source, but with a different [CD], will use the Short Footnote template; and (3) subsequent citations of the same source, but with a different [CM], will also use the Short Footnote template? This third part (a different [CM]) doesn't appear to always be true. > what > Help and my comments are trying to say is that all *three* items > (source, [CD] *and* [CM]) must be identical for subsequent endnotes to > match. Agreed. (Except it's the citations that will match; in this case only one unique endnote will be produced, which the matching citations will all point to.) > If *any* of the three differ that is considered a different and > unique endnote, Again, agreed. > and thus will require use of the Full Footnote template. Here's where we disagree. If the source is the same, but the [CD] and/or the [CM] (there's that "or" again) is different, a new unique endnote is indeed required, but using the Short Footnote template for it is fine, and in my view desirable. And in fact that's the way it works when the [CD] is different, and when both the [CD] and [CM] are different. But not when just the [CM] is different. I've done some more testing, and have found the following: - The first citation of a particular source uses the Full Footnote template. This is as expected, based on the TMG Help page text. - For subsequent citations of the same source ... - If the [CD] changes, the Short Footnote template is used whether or not the [CM] changes. As expected, based on the Help page. - If the [CD] doesn't change, but the [CM] does change, the Full Footnote template is used. Not as expected, based on the Help page. This seems to me like either a (minor) bug in TMG, or an error in the Help page text. But of course neither will now ever be changed. (If TMG were still being supported, I'd hope this is a bug. There's no reason that I can think of for the Full Footnote template to ever be used after the first citation of a source. Assuming, of course, that the [CD] and [CM] are in the Short template.) -- Charlie Towne cetowne@adelphia.net

Yes, Charlie, what the Help page says is true, but I think you are misinterpreting it. For complete details I suggest reviewing the section on "Unique Endnotes" in the "Source Guide" chapter of my on-line book: http://www.mjh-nm.net/SRCGUIDE.HTML#IbidUnique What you are seeing is by design. As I state in that chapter: "The definition of uniqueness for an endnote is based on the combination of three pieces: the source, [CD1] and [CM1]." As you probably know if the CD and CM are not split, then [CD1] and [CM1] is the same as [CD] and [CM]. Since you do not split them, what Help and my comments are trying to say is that all *three* items (source, [CD] *and* [CM]) must be identical for subsequent endnotes to match. If *any* of the three differ that is considered a different and unique endnote, and thus will require use of the Full Footnote template. Or said another way, if two citations are the same source and [CD] but have different [CM]s, then they are different unique endnotes. Hope this helps explain, Michael
