Work is happening on several fronts: (1) *The Initial scope* for the core application has been determined. That is, what we want to be available as common services in the core, and which critical features to demonstrate in the first demonstration version. Clearly, this will not include all the import, reporting and export features that TMG has, but will have a range of features to illustrate some chosen feature extensions. It includes TMG v8.5+ importing, but is likely to have a limited range of reporting templates at first. (2) *Documentation*, that is, contribution protocols and standards, testing procedures, user documentation, etc. are being compiled and collated for storage in a GitHub, a repository for all this content including the application code. The GibHub will be public and linked from the HRE website. So together with updates to the HRE website, HRE wiki and the HRE Github, interested persons will be able to see how the development is proceeding. (3) *Core application development*. Advise received from other community-based GPL software projects has identified that the best way to initially proceed in such a project is to create the core application "in-house" using a small cohesive team of developers. Only when that core application is functional, then will it be possible to invite a wider collection of contributions to create simple narrow-focused feature extensions (or for some ambitious contributors, the creation of history type plugins). This team will be 5 - 8 persons. We are in the process of building that core team. Hopefully rarely, if HRE is not able to find volunteers with appropriate skills, available time and commitment, HRE may need to contract out some key areas to external consultants (but the outcome will still be GPL under the terms of such a contract). (4) *Coding Experiments* are current being conducted with software tools for building the User Interface, code development environments (IDEs), code version control (CVS), module testing, database updating procedures with corruption protection and multi-language implementation alternatives. (5) *Timeline:* All this will take time. Estimating the time to that demonstration application depends on too many unknown factors to provide an estimate that would be worth anything at this time. Once we have reached the stage where we can import a TMG project, safely edit that data with consequences (like delete a person), back it up and restore it, then we may be in the position to give a more worthwhile estimate. With a sense of some frustration, I decided the best course was to Uninstall TMG. This I did, then restarted my computer. The TMG Uninstall process leaves a lot of its files in place, including all the items in User\Documents (such as Projects), however I decided to leave them there. The re-installation was trouble-free, and once I entered my Serial Number TMG started: with the correct Project and the last person viewed. My Screen Preview process is now working as required. Can anyone give us a little update about what's new and exciting with HRE? Robert Thorpe
Hi, Really need help! Of course going to SLC this month and unable to print out any report as everything is greyed out. Thanks, Pauline Ballentine
Cheryl, Did you rename the project from within TMG, or by changing a file name via a list of files in MS Windows? If you changed a file name in MS Windows, I suggest you change it back. A TMG project consists of many files, and they are tied together by the leading part of the file name. If you change one, you have to change them all, and you have to know what you can change and what you cannot change. TMG has a rename project command, and that is easier and shouldn't break anything. If that is what you used, then we'll have to investigate more. John
I'm having a problem when I create/print a Family Group Sheet for a man that had two wives. I'm using TMG 9.05 with Windows 7. When I add a lengthy memo to the man's name tag or create a Note tag with that memo. The full memo the repeats for the sheet with the man's second wife. I would like to find a way to attach a memo for the man so it only shows up once. The man only had children from his first marriage, so it is superfluous to have the memo repeat in the sheet containing his second wife. If I save the FGS to a word processor, I can no doubt delete the second appearance of the memo, but I'd rather find a way to do it in TMG, if it is possible. Any suggestions? John Wood
Why not just identify the two families and use a Flag to identify each? You already have them identified by Focus Groups, so creating and setting a Flag is an easy step. That way you can work within your project on either family, and swap easily without changing data sets. My one-name project has 19 families and each has a Flag. Last year I found two had the same ancestors so I just altered the Flag for one and they were combined! Working in one of my German families, who have the same names for generations, I just merged the wrong two Elizabeth Shafers. I had 3 Elizabeth Shafers, one the mother of Christopher Everhart, one the wife of Christopher Everhart, and a third one who was a duplicate of the mother. I accidentally merged Elizabeth the mother with Elizabeth the wife. Because Christopher named most of his children after his siblings, I am left with something that I would prefer to overwrite, rather than try to sort. I thought that I could rename my current project, restore my last backup, export the Everharts from the restored file to my current project and all would be good. I guess I should have taken that a step farther, and added a first step of "have that first cup of coffee before you plan this." :( I clicked on file/rename. I got a Windows file window, so I navigated to the location of my \Project folder and typed in the new name for my project. I then closed TMG, reopened it and tried to open the new project name. I a TMG error message that it does not appear to be a valid .PJC file. It is a 5K file, for what that is worth. I then tried to open my original .PJC file which is now a 1K file, and it also not accepted by TMG. I am not sure what I did, but would greatly appreciate if anyone could tell me how to fix this without overwriting my entire project with my backup. Both files are in the correct \Projects folder. All the other .PJC files exist with the former name; none have the new "renamed" name. My backup is about 30 hours old; I suppose I would have minimal loss if that is the best way. Thanks Cheryl Freeman
Thanks Lee, I was thinking along those lines but thought I should ask to avoid any pitfalls that I had not considered. The separate dataset will work well in case these two trees connect somewhere. It will be easy to put them back into one dataset.
