    3. Terry, I'm not sure how to use this forum. I have subscribed but don't know how to get started. I have a problem that I believe you can answer. Years ago I installed Roxio CD and DVD burner on my computer. Since that time TMG always tries to connect to Roxio. I have uninstalled Roxio but TMG v9 continues to try to open it. It is annoying because I have to continually cancel the attempt. Is there a solution to this problem? Now that John cardinal's Gedsite program is out I want to create several gedcom files / sites from TMG data for various branches of the family to use as a research tool. Why would you want to use GEDCOM and GenSite to create a website from a TMG database? You will lose quite a number of useful features by doing that, because of the limitations of GEDCOM. It's far better to use Second Site which can read your TMG database directly. If the issue is making separate sites for various branches of the family you can do that easily by using Flags. > > 1. Can someone point me in the right direction? I suspect the issue is interference from another program that is accessing the GEDCOM file as it is being made. Prime suspects are cloud backup/sync programs and some antivirus programs. Enter the message subject as the Title, yoiur brother-in-law as author, his e-mail address and your name ad recipient. Give it an Abbreviation that works for you. Lee

    3. Patrick, First, please do not send messages to the list *and* to me. That just means I get two copies, and I may or may not respond on-list, and that's confusing for me and anyone else reading along. they will miss the responses that get sent directly to you. I am a member of TMG-L, so just send to there. You wrote, in part: > Does TMGU actually check each of the sentences in the tag > or provide the caution 'just in case'? TMGU actually checks the tag. It is thorough. It checks _local_ sentences, witness sentences, etc. If you are confident that altering who is p1 and who is p2 won't affect sentences, just uncheck the filter rather than searching high and low for P1 and P2. That's what I advised you off-list in my first reply. John

    3. John, Thank you for the caution. I went through all the Marriage tag sentences revising [P1] to [P] and [P2] to [PO]. I did the same for each of the other Marr tags, Bann, Cont, Lic, & Sett even though none of those tags should matter. However, I continue to receive the same response when I enable "filter by sentence." Does TMGU actually check each of the sentences in the tag or provide the caution 'just in case'? Options: For Event type: Marriage Filter by sentence: Checked P1, P2 #28 (F), #29 (M) (The previous swap was skipped because of the sentence definition) #191 (F), #192 (M) (The previous swap was skipped because of the sentence definition) #31 (F), #36 (M) (The previous swap was skipped because of the sentence definition) Patrick From: John Cardinal [mailto:John@JohnCardinal.com] Sent: Thursday, January 26, 2017 10:45 AM To: 'Patrick M. It is called "Make P1 Male": http://www.johncardinal.com/tmgutil/makep1male.htm There is one complication: by default, the feature will not swap the principals if any of the sentences for the tag reference [P1] or [P2]. At some point, TMG added sentences that use [P1] or [P2], maybe for a witness? Anyway, if you are confident that your sentences will not be adversely affected by swapping who is P1 and who is P2, then you can uncheck the "Filter by sentence" checkbox to disable the P1/P2 filter. 3. Speaking as a professional data architect (now retired) I can say with confidence that what set TMG apart from almost all PC apps was the combination of its data model and the sophisticated use of data driven processing (e.g., this is what made the reporting so incredibly flexible). Very few professionals will bother to code that way but those that do will produce an exceptionally flexible product. My question: Are you doing the same or are you falling back to hardcoding all the features? I ask because once a development team choses an answer and starts to code there is no going back. I STRONGLY urge you follow Bob V's example. It need not be perfectly identical, in fact it probably shouldn't be, but the path he chose is the right path to walk when your users are from so many different countries and have so many individual preferences. FWIW< I'm helping an Open Source project -- completely different domain than genealogy -- similar user profile and needs and they insist on hardcoding everything. What an inflexible mass/mess of if then else code they've produced. Dave Nelson -----Original Message----- From: TMG [mailto:tmg-bounces+linleymh=bigpond.net.au@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Patrick M. 3. Hi Patrick, TMGU does have this for all two-principal event tags: <http://www.johncardinal.com/tmgutil/makep1male.htm>. I haven't tried it because having variations in my P1/P2 gender doesn't bother me - and when I need something different in the sentence output for each, I've used roles. Still, this is worth experimenting with. Sue On 1/26/2017 9:51 AM, Patrick M. But there is an easier way to get it in a version that you can copy and paste without using obscure registry functions, using functions built into TMG. Open TMG in the old computer, and use the Help > Technical Support command. In the screen that opens click the Trouble Report button at the lower left. When prompted, allows the report to open, which is a text document. Your user name, email, and serial number are a few lines from the top. You can copy this file to your new computer and copy and paste the three items into the registration screen in TMG. Terry Reigel

My guess is that you are mis-typing the registration info into the new installation. It is much better to copy/paste the registration info to prevent making mistakes. If you don't have the registration info in a file that allows you to copy/paste, below is a way to create one. First, on the old computer, start NOTEPAD (or some other text editor). Then , open a Windows Command window (select Run from the Start menu or right-click on the Start button and select Run). Enter "regedt32" (no quotes) and click [OK]. In the Registry Editor, expand the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE topic, then expand the SOFTWARE topic, scroll down to the Wholly Genes Software topic and expand it. Finally expand the The Master Genealogist v8 topic. This will display about 18 items in the larger window pane. The items of interest are: -- TMGEmail -- TMGSerialNumber -- TMGUserName For each of these, double-click to open the Edit String window. Hightlight the Value Data field and copy it. Paste it in the NOTEPAD window and press [Enter]. After copy/pasting all three values into NOTEPAD, save that as a new file as say "TMG v8 Serial". Now, copy the file to the new computer using a thumbdrive or network or whatever. Open the file in the new computer and copy/paster the values from it to the TMG Registration. This should allow the registration to work as intended. Oh, yes, the user name may be stored in the Windows Registry with a forward slash "/" instead of a space. Be sure to change that either in NOTEPAD or in TMG in the new computer as you enter it. Lee
