Thank you, thank you, Michael - I found the problem - the code in an embedded citation was mis-typed. I fixed that and problem solved. Can't thank you enough for giving me back the full power of my TMG report capabilities. - Sally On Sat, Feb 11, 2017 at 4:44 PM, Michael J Hannah <mjh@rr-nm.net> wrote: > Sally V Houston reported: > >> When I try to create including a particular ancestor, TMG refuses >> to complete it, giving the message "conversion error #6..." >> > > Hi Sally, > > Since the problem does not occur if you do not include this person I would > suspect two possiblilities: > > - Check for an exhibit being linked to this person where the type of image > file is something other than the typical .jpg etc. > > - Check for a memo which contains wierd special characters. > > Those are the two most likely causes which come to mind. > > Hope this gives you ideas, > > Michael > The TMG archive is found here: http://archiver.rootsweb.ances > try.com/th/index/TMG/ > Instructions on how to subscribe to TMG: http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry > .com/index/other/Software/TMG.html > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > TMG-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes > in the subject and the body of the message >
Sally V Houston reported: > When I try to create including a particular ancestor, TMG refuses > to complete it, giving the message "conversion error #6..." Hi Sally, Since the problem does not occur if you do not include this person I would suspect two possiblilities: - Check for an exhibit being linked to this person where the type of image file is something other than the typical .jpg etc. - Check for a memo which contains wierd special characters. Those are the two most likely causes which come to mind. Hope this gives you ideas, Michael
When I try to create including a particular ancestor, TMG refuses to complete it, giving the message "conversion error #6..." Since the problem does not occur with any report not including this ancestor, I know it is not a MS Word problem. Is there something I've put into the record for this person which causes this. Other than that, my TMG is still working fine. Help! - Sally
The TMG User groups from the ACT and NSW (Australia) are holding their annual TMG weekend at Canberra ACT from the evening of Friday 31 March to mid-afternoon Sunday 2 April. Workshops will be presented by members on aspects of TMG and associated programs (Second Site, TMG Utilities etc.) We believe there are other TMG users in Australia who might wish to attend, and we would welcome them! It also presents an opportunity to spend some research time before and/or after the weekend at the nearby National Library and the National Archives. I also merge all duplicated persons. Sometimes a little cleaning of tags has to be done but this only takes a few minutes. If he's already in your database (which means he's a duplicate) why not merge the two? That's what I do. If yopu want to delete anybody they must not be linked to anybody else---so yes, you have to unlink them. To unlink from a child simply go to the child's page and delete the parent tag. Linking a father to his children is easy---simply put his (the father's) ID number in the parent tag on his child's page. Chuck On Wed, Feb 8, 2017 at 9:37 PM, W. When deleting a person because he's already in the DB, it says to first manually unlink a child from a parent. How do I do that? Also, I have a father already out there who was previously added as an unrelated person. How do I now link his children to him? Just a reminder that our next TMG meeting is to be held at the Society of Australian Genealogists' building, Richmond Villa, 120 Kent Street, Sydney, on Saturday 18^th February, from 1.30 to 3.30pm. You can book here - [1]https://www.sag.org.au/events/event-listing/icalrepeat.detail/2017/0 2/18/227/-/tmg-user-group.html Our guest speaker will be talking about backing up your family data, photos, documents etc. There will be a detailed methodology shared as an example, and time for members to consider a range of options. He will also be explaining his way to record, within TMG, details of people who provide family history information, and illustrate how this is utilised during research and in a web site or CD produced by Second Site software. If time permits, there will be a shared Q&A session, so if members have a question about using TMG this will be an opportunity to ask it. -- Bruce Fairhall References 1. https://www.sag.org.au/events/event-listing/icalrepeat.detail/2017/02/18/227/-/tmg-user-group.html
Cheryl Freeman wrote: > I am having a problem with my short place template in Second Site, > that appears to be the result of a choice made in TMG. Hi Cheryl, John replied with where you set the global "default" Short Place template in TMG. You can also define a "specific" Short Place template which is used only for a specific Place record in the Master Place List. You cannot set this specific template as part of entering the place on an event tag. You must open the Master Place List and edit the specific Place record to enter a specific Short Place template for that Place. If you want further explanation of this template, for both its use in TMG and in Second Site, you might review the section on "Short Place" in the "Data Entry" chapter of my on-line book: http://www.mjh-nm.net/DATENTRY.HTML#ShortPlace Hope this gives you ideas, Michael
Cheryl, See: Preferences > Current Project Options > Other John
I am having a problem with my short place template in Second Site, that appears to be the result of a choice made in TMG. I do not have short place templates defined in TMG, and Second Site, using the "Full then short" place style is using L5 (state) only after the first time a place name is used. John Cardinal's SS help says: As in TMG, the short place is either a literal string assigned to the place via the Master Place List (MPL), or, if that is empty, the short place is the result of interpreting the Short Place template which is defined in the TMG preferences." I can't find anything in TMG preferences that lets me define a short place template. Can someone point me to this? I am not asking how to create the string for a short place name; but rather, for help finding a global setting in preferences to which John refers. Thanks! Cheryl Freeman
W. Fred Rump wrote: > Both parties show up under the marriage tag as married > but when I click on Add Person under either > no marriage partner appears. Fred, the issue is what you are doing *after* you click Add Person. When you click Add Person while viewing a parent you will not *yet* see the marriage partner(s). You must now choose either Son or Daughter (or turn on "Add multiple" and choose Children). Only now will the "Select second parent" window pop up which will show the individual(s) which share a tag in the Marriage group with this person. I am guessing that this is the marriage partner(s) list which you are expecting to see? Hope this helps explain what you are (not) seeing, Michael
Fred - that happens to me all the time - I thought it was just the way it's supposed to be. Simply go into the daughter's page, put in the ID of her mother and voila - she has two parents. Except from within a Tag, any of these should display the Add Person Type window to allow you to choose the relation of the new person to the current Focus person. If you are adding a Marriage Tag, then immediately after opening the Tag, the Focus Person should be recorded in the First Principal field (the Role may or may not be Principal). If you click on the stick figure in the upper right corner to add a new person then TMG will ask for the new person's gender. and then display the Quick Add Screen. After entering that information, clicking [OK] will close the window and return to the open Tag Entry screen with the new person added as the Second Principal. Is this not what you are seeing? Lee

Fred, I think you have both parities in your database but not as husband and wife. If that is the case, make note of ID numbers for both of them, go to one and either open of add a marriage tag. You probably have only one of them in that tag. Enter the number of the other party and you will have married them. I hope I understood your question.
