    3. You write that TMG 9 translates role names into other languages. Guess that wasn`t a part of the earlier versions then?. I have changed some of the "English written" roles into Norwegian. Think I had help making style changes for places etc too. -----Opprinnelig melding----- Fra: TMG [mailto:tmg-bounces+gj_erov7=bbnett.no@rootsweb.com] På vegne av Terry Reigel Sendt: 26. februar 2017 14:53 Til: The Master Genealogist Rootsweb Email List <tmg@rootsweb.com> Emne: Re: [TMG] Tmg 9?? Would it be worth upgrading from 8.04? Erik, As Lee says, every person entered in a Tag is a Witness. So if a person is entered in three Tags, say birth, death, and burial, he or she would be listed as three Witnesses. In my Project there are 3.28 times as many Witnesses as people. There is no problem with your Project and upgrading to TMG9 will have no effect on this. The decision to upgrade should be based on the the factors Lee lists below, and which I amplified on in a post a few minutes ago. One feature Lee didn't mention that may be useful to you since it appears from your email settings that English is not your primary language - in TMG 9 Role names are translated into other languages. 3. While I wait for an answer to my question ,I took a look at the link Terry sent ,and wonder about this Harry Goegebeur. It says that he is a Dutch former TMG beta tester and dealer who has serial numbers still available....If I should decide to upgrade ,should I upgrade to the latest version? ,and would he have the installers/cd and serialnumber so you don`t need to worry about free trials? Since I am in Norway ,I use Norwegian language on my TMG. When it says the US and UK edition.....what`s the differences? ,hopefully they both support Norwegian language. -----Opprinnelig melding----- Fra: TMG [mailto:tmg-bounces+gj_erov7=bbnett.no@rootsweb.com] På vegne av Terry Reigel Sendt: 26. februar 2017 14:38 Til: The Master Genealogist Rootsweb Email List <tmg@rootsweb.com> Emne: Re: [TMG] Tmg 9?? This has been on the wishlist for a very long time, and it's very handy. Not only to preview a Source you are creating with the feature above, but more to let you see the full text of an existing Citation without opening the Master Source List. Also very handy for copying a Citation when you are sending someone a note about a person. > * Add Multiple People - add shared events (e.g., Census) on the Add > Multiple People and Add Family screens, including the role of each > participant. > * Add Multiple People - add an Age column with a Birth Date column. > If an age and the event date are added for a person, the Birth date > will be calculated automatically. > * Add Multiple People - Copy button allows you to copy the value in > the top cell of a column to everyone else on that screen. For those who use Narrative output this may be the biggest feature of all. I use them all the time. Very handy. One point Lee didn't mention... for those thinking they may want to change to another program at some point, I suspect you will have better luck with the direct imports some programs now offer if you are using the current version. Perhaps someone who has tried them can offer some solid information about whether this is true. If you are thinking about upgrading to TMG 9 don't wait too long - we don't know how long serial numbers will remain available. I don't see that anyone has answered Erik's question on that point - yes, they are currently available. Sorry to disillusion you, David. But, you have been using Witnesses for years. That was added way back before v4.x -- possibly as early as v2 (memory is a bit shaky that far back). In fact, TMG made early use of the fact that TMG is built around the idea that every person attached to a Tag is a witness (even if they are not a Witness). The new features of v9.00 included: * Citations - add a new source without leaving the Citation screen. * Citations - preview the source output directly from the Citation screen. * Add Multiple People - add shared events (e.g., Census) on the Add Multiple People and Add Family screens, including the role of each participant. * Add Multiple People - add an Age column with a Birth Date column. A role reminder will display if it exists and will change if you change the Witness roles. If no role reminder exists, the tag type reminder will display. * Sentences - The right-click menus in the Sentence fields are much more informative about the role variables being selected. * Sentences - A number of new variables for event tags have been added. The "Subject" is the person about whom the current sentence is being constructed (the current Principal or the current Witness). Erik, TMG 7 has some 16-bit code in the report writer, which creates reports that go to Word, and I think to Excel and PDF. So that will not work on a 64-bit version of Windows. That was fixed in TMG 8. > It is > sent to word 1997-2003....doc.files. Files written to Word are written in an older Word format that mostly opens in current versions of Word. However their is an issue certain highly formatted report types - Family Group Sheets, and I think a couple of others - that will not open in the newest versions of Word (not sure which versions that started with). If you have that issue, with the Report Definition screen open, click the Help button and there is a note telling you how to work around it. > In the future I also want to keep my 4 genealogyprograms on one computer in > the future ,but I really don`t know what Windows I should have ,to get all > of them to work properly. (XP?...It will not be internet on that computer > ,to ) The older ones will require a 32-bit version of Windows. TMG 8 & 9 will run on XP, so that will work. As I assume you know that's no longer supported so you would probably not want it to connect to the Internet. Terry

You can do that by downloading the installer and installing over your existing installation. The serial number should remain, but make sure you have it just in case. Your serial number is good for any version of TMG 8. I'm not sure if this is your question, but you can move your data to any later version, but not to an earlier one. > Can I upgrade from 8.04 to > 9.05?,or do you have to use an earlier version of version 9 to be able to > upgrade to the latest version 9.05? I see that I can download installers to > both 8.08 and 9.05 US editions The installers are not really "upgrades" in the sense that they depend on any earlier version. They are full, independent, installers that will install the stated version. All you need is an installer and the serial number for that version - that is TMG 8 or TMG 9. > (I now have TMG 8.04 Gold edition ,would > these be gold or silver edition?) Your serial number determines whether you get gold or silver - the same installer is used for both. I believe Harry only has serial numbers for the gold edition. You could of course use any name you liked for custom Roles. In TMG 9 all Roles, custom and default, can have names in each language. Translated names are provided for the default Roles in most supported languages. Sorry, I can't help you with your Styles question. Terry

> * Add Multiple People - add an Age column with a Birth Date > column. Some folks love them, I find them useless because you can't customize the CDs for each event, which I do a lot. > * Tag Type Definition - Reminders can now be added for roles. Handy, I suppose, if you use Roles other than the default Principal and Witness, but I've never found a need for it. > > * Tag Entry - Right-clicking in either principal ID number field > offers an option to switch the Principal ID numbers. I didn't know this was added until Lee posted this. Maybe because I never worry about the order of the Principals. > * Tag Entry - The notice about irregular date entry has been > revised to work better and to be more informative. Yes, it does. Handy. > * Tag Entry - Reminders now show on the Add/Edit Witness screens. A > role reminder will display if it exists and will change if you change > the Witness roles. Same comment as above about Role Reminders. > * Sentences - The right-click menus in the Sentence fields are much > more informative about the role variables being selected. See http://tmg.reigelridge.com/future.htm#resellers Terry Reigel

If an age and the event date are added for a person, the Birth date will be calculated automatically. * Add Multiple People - Copy button allows you to copy the value in the top cell of a column to everyone else on that screen. * Tag Type Definition - Reminders can now be added for roles. * Tag Entry - Right-clicking in either principal ID number field offers an option to switch the Principal ID numbers. * Tag Entry - The notice about irregular date entry has been revised to work better and to be more informative. * Tag Entry - Reminders now show on the Add/Edit Witness screens. These new variables are designed to make the global and custom sentences much more flexible. There were also a few other new features added to the later minor upgrade to v9, but these were the main ones. Lee

    3. I have TMG 8.4 by now. Just joined this group ,and wonder if it is any point for me to upgrade to or buying TMG 9?? Or if it is possible to buy it with a serial number somewhere anymore? I guess the TMG 9 installer is still out there ,but no point in having that if you don't get the serial number anywhere?..... Don`t know if it is any point of upgrading my TMG 8.4 either though.....it works fine yet.... Hope someone can give me some clues..... I do have the installers to TMG 7.4 and 8.4 and 3.5 though.

    3. Eric, Depends upon how much of the parts of TMG you use. I still use 8.08, but don't use witnesses, so didn't feel that there was any advantage to move up. It tell you that on the Merge Data Sets window and you can choose which way the merge should go -- Data set B to A (Data set B remains intact) or you may choose Data set A to B (Data set A remains intact). A similar option is available for merging projects. Once the merge has taken place, you can then Delete the data set that is no longer needed (e.g., the one that was unchanged). TMG could have automatically deleted the data set, but you may have some reason to keep it. For example, you might have created the data set as part of research in collaboration with someone else and have yet to send the other researcher(s) a copy. Thus, you can do the merge and see how it affects your main project and, if it seems good, then send the merged from data set to your collaborators. Lee Lee

    3. Lee, Thanks for the answers. Your e-mail has been sitting in my junk mail all day. I just cleaned the junk mail folder out before shutting down the computer for the day. I found the information I needed to make the corrections - there were only 16 corrections to make. I have deleted the excess Census tags and finally got my two main projects merged, then merged the two datasets. There are several duplicates because I had made a separate project for my ancestors so that I could do some detailed research. Those are the duplicates I have to merge. I have finished the surnames beginning with B. When merging two datasets within the same project is one dataset copied into the other and still left intact as dataset 2:? I didn't expect that. Use a similar filter to the one Michael first suggested for the List of Events report. But change the Value field to the label name of the Tag you want to find (e.g., "Cen 1850"). Lee
