Hi Karen, YES, it does sound like you had a problem with a particular chart configuration file. Thanks for reporting back. I’m just too clever for my own good. Got the report into Excel, but there are no “duplicates” because of the superscripted generation numbers that I hadn’t paid any attention to. Robin Kaspar asked: > Which report format would be best for an Ahnentafel report > to pull it into Excel? I’m not familiar with the difference > between ANSI and ASCII. And Donald Range replied: >> Both the ASCII and ANSI text reports of an Ahnentafel import > equally well into Excel for me. I tried it with the unformatted versions > of the report... Yes, the "unformatted" versions should be the same. I "believe"? that the difference is in what text characters are used to simulate drawing lines in the "formatted" versions of the report. Robin Kaspar then replied: > Got the report into Excel, but there are no “duplicates” > because of the superscripted generation numbers > that I hadn’t paid any attention to. In the Ahnentafel Report Options under the Names tab change Identifiers to "None" and untick the Generation numbers. That will eliminate those numbers from being generated in the report. Not sure what exactly you are trying to do, but if you explained your goal there may be a TMG report, with the appropriate sort, that might do what you want directly. Michael
Hi Karen, Both error messages refer to the use of flags. There is a setting about frags that is causing a problem as TMG sets up the command file that it sends to Visual Chartform. There are 2 obvious places where you may directly or indirectly using flags. (1) On the Report Configuration screen - Ancestor Chart Make sure that "Only use people with this flag" value is UNSET (2) In Chart Options, Boxes tab Make sure "Use Accents" is UNSET If this works then look at the way you have setup flags and accents. Both the ASCII and ANSI text reports of an Ahnentafel import equally well into Excel for me. I tried it with the unformatted versions of the report in both Excel 2003 and Excel 2010. The result was the same - each line of the TMG report is imported to the first cell of a row in Excel. Because assuming the ahnentafel can be imported into Excel in rows, it will be easier for me to have Excel remove the duplicates for me. > On Feb 26, 2017, at 7:22 PM, tdavislong <tdavislong@copper.net> wrote: > > > Why not put in in a regular word document to proof? > > On 2/26/2017 5:19:38 PM, Robin Kaspar <kaspar.robin@gmail.com> wrote: > Which report format would be best for an Ahnentafel report to pull it into Excel? Hi Robin, I think I may have fixed it. I could not get to the Report Configuration screen or the Chart Options. I only got the error message and the only option that worked was "Abort". I have always had this problem when creating Ancestor Charts in other projects, but "Ignore" always worked and then I could create the chart with no problem. Somehow switching to secondary projects doesn't work well when it comes to charts. I've never had the problem in my main project until today. I did create an Ancestor Chart two days ago in my Y-DNA Surname project. Switching projects was probably the catalyst once again -- just in reverse. To fix it in my main project, I opened one of the other Ancestor Chart configurations, and then switched to the one that was giving errors. That worked. Then I closed it, and directly opened the Ancestor Chart configuration that had caused the errors. It now works! Which report format would be best for an Ahnentafel report to pull it into Excel? I’m not familiar with the difference between ANSI and ASCII. You can do that by downloading the installer and installing over your existing installation. The serial number should remain, but make sure you have it just in case. Your serial number is good for any version of TMG 8. I'm not sure if this is your question, but you can move your data to any later version, but not to an earlier one. > Can I upgrade from 8.04 to > 9.05?,or do you have to use an earlier version of version 9 to be able > to upgrade to the latest version 9.05? They are full, independent, installers that will install the stated version. All you need is an installer and the serial number for that version - that is TMG 8 or TMG 9. > (I now have TMG 8.04 Gold edition ,would these be gold or silver > edition?) Your serial number determines whether you get gold or silver - the same installer is used for both. I believe Harry only has serial numbers for the gold edition. Great!. So if I download an installer of TMG 9 ,and then get a serialnumber from Harry (if of course he has some left?!!) that should be what I need to do?. I know it is several versions of TMG 8 and possibly also version 9 (8.04 and 8.08 and possibly 9 and 9.05). Since I have 8.04 I understand I can only upgrade to version 8.08 or later ,right? Can I upgrade from 8.04 to 9.05?,or do you have to use an earlier version of version 9 to be able to upgrade to the latest version 9.05? I see that I can download installers to both 8.08 and 9.05 US editions (I now have TMG 8.04 Gold edition ,would these be gold or silver edition?) Installers are available from a number of places. There are links to them in the article I suggested. Once you download the installer keep a copy in a safe place in case they are not available later. > Since I am in Norway ,I use Norwegian > language on my TMG. The UK edition is the same except the language is preset to to English (UK) and there are special Source Types. But either will support Norwegian. He also acted as a reseller of TMG. Since Wholly Genes discontinued selling serial numbers he has become the only legitimate source, so far as I know, of serial numbers. > If I should decide to upgrade ,should I upgrade to the latest version? > ,and would he have the installers/cd and serialnumber so you don`t > need to worry about free trials? If you are using TMG 8 the only upgrade is to TMG 9. If you do that the only installers widely available are for the last version, which you definitely should use.
