I also see no purpose in this. If you have a license for version 8 you should have the most complete minor version installed. Of course if you intend to keep using TMG I would highly recommend getting Version 9 while you still can. If you simply want to have two copies of TMG open and running on the same computer at the same time, for example to compare two different projects, you can do that already with any single installation of TMG. You cannot install two instances of the _same_major_ version of TMG as one would overwrite the other. It is possible to install a copy of each _major_ version of TMG. I currently have the latest versions of TMG versions, 7, 8, and 9 as well as a copy of TMG v4. I regularly open v9. The others are mainly used to help other users. I have not opened v7 or v8 in quite some time although a local friend still uses v4 a bit and often calls me for help -- mostly because he hasn't used the program for a long time. Having said this, what would be the purpose or advantage of having two installations of the same major versions but of different minor version? Essentially there are no differences between the two other than some bug fixes and some relatively minor new features. Tell us what you want to do and we can help you out. Lee

Well, that is correct "if" the parent is Primary. When Primary the -bio is stripped so you "just" see Mother or Father. But if the Relationship tag is not set for this parent to be Primary, then the tag shows in the Details section instead of in the parental section with the tag label Mother-Bio or Father-Bio. Relationship tag types which are not -bio never have their tag type suffix stripped even if the tag is set for this parent to be Primary. Hope that is clearer. Michael

    3. Kathy & Larry McCurdy asked: > We just opened an old project... > all of the relationship tags have -ado instead of -bio > or in case of parents, just father & mother. Sorry to hear of your problems, but more information is needed. First, I am not sure what you mean by "just" father & mother above. I am assuming you have the Preferences // Program Options // Tag Box // Show children option ticked so that you see the children in the Parent's display. Now if the Relationship tag linking a parent and a child is the -bio tag you should see: - in a parent's view the child assigned that Relationship tag would show Son-Bio or Daughter-Bio. - in the child's view the parent(s) assigned that Relationship tag would "just" show Mother or Father. If the Relationship tag linking a parent and child is -ado you should see: - in a parent's view the child assigned that Relationship tag would show Son-Ado or Daughter-Ado. - in the child's view the parent(s) assigned that Relationship tag would show Mother-Ado or Father-Ado not "just" Mother or Father. Is that actually what you are seeing? > We have no idea how these became this way, I wonder if this is a "language" issue. Is the project now set for the TMG Language setting of "English (U.S.)" and has the project always had this Language setting? If the project is now or has been set to some other language it is possible that the -bio Relationship tag label name has been inadvertently "translated" to the character string -ado in this other language. > we would really like to get them changed back... > is there any way that John's utility program will do it? As I understand it, John's utility program will only make global changes of one "Event" tag type to another "Event" tag type. I believe it will not change a "Relationship" tag type to another "Relationship" tag type. But based on your responses to my questions above there may be another way to change them back. Michael

    3. Hi all, I haven't had to do this for several years. I can see under my projects, the sample folder and straight underneath are all the files for my "national park" named project. I uninstalled and reinstalled and discovered these files did not disappear, so deleted them manually. Reinstalled and everything is the same as before. There were no prompts to create a folder. Should they be under a folder, and if I do it manually, will I only need to change the path names. I cannot see anything in Terrys book. It is all working OK, but what happens when I restore another project, will they just mix with the other files. Sorry everyone, age is getting to me, and I cannot remember how it looked before. To our amazement, all of the relationship tags have -ado instead of -bio or in case of parents, just father & mother. We have no idea how these became this way, but we would really like to get them changed back. We are using 9.05, is there any way that John's utility program will do it? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Kathy & Larry McCurdy

You can restore everything to the default locations if the projects have different names. If you want separate folders you can specify them when you restore. Terry Reigel

(Did I enter the right >search word?) >I use a database for organizing my images, and I use Quicken. I >assume the same caveats apply. The caveat against using Dropbox (or any cloud-based storage media) is primarily based on how databases work. This may or may not include system in which the data is stored in a single file (database) or in many files (many databases). TMG has close to one hundred files that must be open at any one time and as such may not be used by any other program. So if Dropbox tries to sync with an open TMG file (database) that could "break" the open status of that file with TMG just at the time TMG is trying to make changes to that file. In such a case, TMG would crash. This crash may or may not cause the loss of data (other than what was being changed), but it is highly likely. Also it is not unusual for TMG to write to two or more files based on one change that you make. For example, you may edit a person's Birth Tag adding a Date, a Memo, and a Source Citation supporting that change. This would mean that the Event Database, the Source Citation Database plus two index files, and possibly to text storage files would need updating as well as some administrative files. If the sync occurs between the update of only some of those files is complete and then you power went off (crashing your system) and you tried to restore your system based on the cloud, your TMG project would be out of sync because only part of the update had been synced. Further, a lot depends on how the database is being used. In some cases, an open database may be wholly within memory (e.g., a spreadsheet) and when closed is completely re-written to your hard drive. I make it a rule not to have my TMG files as part of my Cloud backup/syncing. I backup my project after each session and multiple times during long sessions. Then I copy that backup to a location that is part of the Cloud backup system. I semi-automate this with a batch file which copies the filename I give it to the proper location. The batch file is not really needed as it is almost as easy use File Explorer to make the copy. The downside of the batch file is that if I use the date/time method of naming my backups then it is not easy to tell the batch file which backup file to copy. Thus I use the number system making the backup filenames much shorter. This also means that it is less easy to know which backup file is the correct one to use in a TMG Restore as I must use File Explorer to find the date and time of the file rather than just looking at the file name. Marion, First, using the Rootsweb search search for "dropbox" in the Body of posts, not in the Subject line. I got many posts in 2016 alone, much less earlier. Many of us users have made this same recommendation to not have Dropbox sync TMG data folders. The quick explanation is that any program which monitors the many data files TMG uses as its database "may" be trying to monitor or read a file when TMG is also trying to write to that file, and thus interfere with that writing and corrupt that file. Hope this answers your question, Michael

    3. Thank you for your explanation and suggestion Lee, but the problem doesn't appear to be a corrupt configuration file. Following your reply to my post, this is what I did: 1) Tried each of the default backup configurations - all three produced the same error message 2) Shut down TMG and renamed the three .bkp configuration files to Old(filename) 3) Restarted TMG, opened a project, selected exit, then accepted the backup prompt. This time I was presented with six configurations - the three normal ones plus the three renamed ones. 4) Checked the configuration directory with file explorer and found that my three renamed files were still there, along with three newly created ones with the original names 5) In TMG, tried each of the normal configurations again (the new files); each produced the same error message as before. A bit of Googling has revealed, as I suspected, that it's a Visual FoxPro error message. Apparently it indicates that there has been an attempt to update a DBF table that is read-only. I guess the backup process should not do this, so maybe it indicates that something in the database has been corrupted. I will be away for the next week, so finding a fix will have to wait till I get back. Thank you, Lee, for your help. 3. Can someone advise on how to fix a TMG error message, please? When exiting TMG the prompt to backup takes the user through a series of steps to configure the backup. Recently I have been getting an error message during this process; sometimes it pops up after Step 3: Options; other times it comes after one of the later steps, or after clicking Finish. The error message is: "Cannot update the cursor STRINGS, since it is read-only". If I then click IGNORE, the Backups seem to work normally (the .sqz files are created, and can be restored); but if I click CANCEL, I get a further error message: "Function argument value, type, or count is invalid". I have tried all the file maintenance options, and also tried deselecting External Exhibits and all the Advanced and Program checkboxes in Step 3: Options, without any effect. The installation is version 9.0.5 UK Gold edition on Windows 10 Pro. Hopefully one of the TMG experts on this List knows the cause of this error message and can help me fix it. Although it is not preventing use of TMG, it worries me! Mike Wild

    3. Erik, You should probably install it and see what happens. Make sure that TMG is installed on the WinXP PC before you install TMG Utility. If it installs OK, and basic operations like opening the TMG project work, then you're probably OK. John

I assume you are using one of the default configurations (selected in Step 1). What happens if you select one of the others? These three default configurations are essentially the same with the difference being which options are pre-selected when the configuration is chosen. As you go through the steps of the Wizard, you can select/de-select the desired options. So the end result is the same regardless of the initially selected configuration. If you try one of the other configuration and there are no problems, it would be likely that the other configuration file is corrupt. If so, you probably want to delete that bad configuration file and maybe re-create it. Lee
