They were migrated into V9. Have been sitting all day trying out things ,and to figure out the best way to get it to work. I have 13 projects ,all from 8.04. I did a backup of all of them ,and simply restored them in V9. No ,only my main V8 project were using the special name and place style ,while the other projects mostly is using US standard name and place styles ,so I have to get all the name and place styles into my special style. I did find it easy to use John Cardinal`s TMG utility to switch all of names and place styles over to my special style ,but I had to create those styles in the other projects before TMG utility could change them to my special style. That was not much trouble..... Then I started to try out how to get the tagtypes straight ,so that the tagtypes in my main-project was the same as in the others. That was a bit a hard though. I don`t think I have found the most proper way of doing that yet... First ,I started to have my main project and one other project open at same time and comparing the tags against each other ,and write in sentences ,translations from the main project ,but found out that it takes very much time..... After that, I found that it was possible to import tagtypes from another project ,and restore them into another. Therefore ,I tried to export the tagtypes from my main project into a tags.xtt file ,and then importing those tags into the other projects afterwards. I tried it with one project ,and took a look at the tagtypelists in both projects ,and the result was good ,at least they had the same information ,sentences etc ,so it might be what I should do tomorrow.....??. ..........At least ,it is faster to do it that way ,than going through all the tagtypes comparing them to the main project with each of all the other projects..... That was as far I got today ,but will try a bit more tomorrow with this. Also tried to make an empty project ,and restoring a backup into it ,but anyway you will have the same tagtypes and will need to do the same things as if you just restore them into V9...... Maybe it is possible to make an empty project ,then first importing the tagtype xtt file ,and then secondly restore one of the backup projects after that?. Thinking thinking........ >From what you wrote..... "In your case you may only wish to copy the Tag Type list, the Master Place List, and the Styles. Then as continued in my book: . Close the project within TMG and then use TMG to copy the entire project with its new empty dataset into a new project . Delete all datasets in the new project except the new empty one, and renumber the empty dataset to '1' . Go back to your original project and delete the added empty dataset..........." I was able to copy the tag type list and styles to another dataset which I called "1" ,but did not get any further after that!!.... Close what project? ,I can`t get into that project 1 ,and to copy project (which??). and if I am going to delete all datasets in the new project except the empty one ,then I would have to delete the main project as well?? How did you do this? You mentioned earlier that you had version 8 projects. Did you do a backup in V8 and restore in V9? Or did you simply Open the V8 projects in V9? Were the V8 projects already using your special place and name styles? If they were already being used in the V8 projects I don't understand why they were not migrated. However, as I mentioned earlier, I am not familiar with using alternate languages in TMG, so maybe some other user with experience in languages might have and idea and can help. However I do use alternate styles and have encountered issues with them. Styles are unique to a given dataset within a given project. > I have created another place/name style than US standard on some of > the other projects, but the rest are still using the US standard style... If you have not yet used these new styles in some projects, I do know that the *order* in which you create custom styles in the list of styles affects importing data which uses alternate custom styles. So if you import tags which use custom name or place styles, it appears that the style is stored upon export of that tag type as the n-th style in the list of Styles. The import does not match styles based on the style name, only on the position in the list. If the /sequence/ of styles in the exporting dataset and the importing dataset are not identical, the tag type will be linked to a different style in the imported dataset than it was in the exported dataset. If you have created a new Project with new customizations, and want to apply those customizations to other existing Projects, that can be a chore. Since you have quite a number, you may wish to consider my suggestions in my on-line book. See the topic concerning merging "Project Files with Customizations" in the Import/Export chapter: http://www.mjh-nm.net/IMEXPORT.HTML#MergingFiles This topic mentions methods of creating a new Project with the desired customizations, then importing/merging an existing dataset/project into this new Project which already has all the desired customizations, like styles. I would suggest the first of the two methods I mention under the subtopic "Retain Sources and Repositories." You would "Add" a new empty dataset (not a new Project) using the Dataset Manager to the existing project which has the desired customizations, such as styles. The "Add" action provides options to select which of various features will be copied from the currently selected existing dataset. I generally choose to retain all of these for my purposes, but you may not wish to. . Master Source List, categories, templates, and elements (all or nothing) . Master Repository List (all or nothing) . Tag Type List, global sentence structures, and roles (all or nothing) . Master Place List (all or nothing) . Flags (all or nothing) . Name and place styles (all or none) In your case you may only wish to copy the Tag Type list, the Master Place List, and the Styles. Then as continued in my book: . Close the project within TMG and then use TMG to copy the entire project with its new empty dataset into a new project . Delete all datasets in the new project except the new empty one, and renumber the empty dataset to '1' . Go back to your original project and delete the added empty dataset Now you have a new project with an empty dataset but with the copied customizations. Use TMG to make as many copies of this empty project as desired. Now you can Import and merge the data from each old project into its new customized project. Hope this gives you ideas, Michael
Hi Graeme, Somewhere in my collection of computers, I have a machine which has 2 versions of TMG on it, one that will open a .VCH file, and the other that can save a .VC2 file. I have done this for someone else. What you do is open the .VCH file CTRL+A, CTRL+C putting all the chart on the clipboard, then in the later Visual Chartform .VC2 version, with a new (empty chart) , click mouse at the top-left corner, then CRTL+V to paste it, in then save the file. Please send me a direct email (robin.lamacraft@internode.on.net) and we can discuss other options. Graeme, I think I'm right in saying VCH belonged to Visual Chartform V1, which shipped as part of TMG v4. TMG v5.03 was using Visual Chartform v2.1, which I think was were VC2 files arrived, so somewhere in-between is your answer.... As far as I know there is no VCH to VC2 conversion path, so your thinking is correct (namely use an old version to read it). I may still have my v4 CD somewhere if you get stuck (for those who don't realise, Graeme and I are in the same city!) Cheryl, My last message and yours must have crossed in the mail. I see that you have found the issue, and it was language related. I am glad I could help. John
John, you nailed my problem and I am so grateful! My SS site uses a custom language with default to English, and I have my TMG IN reports set to that same custom language while I am trying to recreate the site. While my English U.S. sentence does not contain a leading space after the conditional bracket, my custom language sentence did - by accident, not design.) I had forgotten to check that and thank you so much! That can happen due to a language mismatch: you are using TMG in "English (U.S.)", but the reports are set to use "English (UK)", for example. You can determine which Sentence Language SS is using in the Language section of your SDF file. The sentence that is being used, the one without the preposition, probably has a leading space before [L], like this: < [L]> Alternatively, it may not be conditional: [L] Either one will disable the addition of the preposition. Lee, Thanks for the suggestions, and my apologies for sending this question twice. I've been out of the country for a month and forgot I had created a temporary rule in Outlook for list messages to move them from my Inbox :( There is no space before the conditional bracket and the [L]. I even got out my copy of GMOOT to make sure I remembered correctly! Since this seems to be a one-time situation, apparently not related to a user issue, I will hard code the preposition. Thanks! I am asking for help. This is the TMG sentence: [:CR:][:CR:][S] witnessed the will of [R:Testator] <[D]> <[L]> This is what appears in the sentence preview: Isaac Freeman witnessed the will of Henry Crumpton on 15 Jul 1806 in Fairfield District, South Carolina. If you have a person with multiple marriages to the same person, only one can be Primary. The others would have to be non-Primary because only one Tag of a Tag Type may be Primary for the same Principal(s). The same would also apply to Divorce Tags or even Name, Birth, Death, Burial, Relationship, or any other Tag (except History -- History Tags don't have Principals). As to how these came to be multiple Tags, either there was a merging at some point, or someone added the Marriage Tag multiple times. During a merge of persons, TMG will retain all Tags from both persons even if they are for the exact same event because one Tag may contain something slightly different from the other. Usually this is the Memo, Witnesses, or Citations. Even if the Citations are the same, they may differ in the Citation Detail or Citation Memo. Further, the Surety Values of Citations may differ. These are all things that the user has to determine whether/how they should be retained. John - Thank you very much for the TMGU idea with the flag. I don't know why I didn't think of that - it's perfect. Actually I know why I missed it - it's way at the bottom. And thanks for the check about BMD tags. The BirthProb didn't create a birthdate to use for age calculating. However I have thousands of tags with other roles, such as residence, Military, Immigration, etc. Lee - I used roles primarily for creating different kinds of sentences. My residence tag has roles for moved, wasof, withdate, etc. If I didn't fix them, they would create not accurate data. The default Role for most Tags is Principal for the two Principal slots (P1 & P2), and Witness for all Witnesses. Linda, Change Event Type supports TMGU's Flag Filter. If you set a custom flag for everyone whose Birth Event you want to change to a BirthProb event, then you can tell TMGU to change Birth events only for those people. Unfortunately, if you have some people with multiple Birth events, but only one of those should be changed, you are out of luck; using the Flag Filter, TMGU will either change all of the Birth tags for a person, or none of them. Before you do anything, you should verify that the target application will produce a reasonable outcome when you use a non-standard Birth Group event. Perhaps there are other event types where using a custom event will help, but in my experience, other applications have restrictions on the Birth, Death and (to a lesser extent) Marriage event types. The custom tag may not be recognized as a birth, or it may be recognized as a birth but imported such that BirthProb is indistinguishable from Birth after it is loaded. John
Hi John - In preparation for moving (at some time) out of TMG I must convert all my P1 tags with roles to P1 tags with no roles. I have thousands of these tags. I have done some event by event, but it is tedious..... Is there a facility in TMGU that I am overlooking? I would like to change tag Birth.Probably to a new tag BirthProb (that I have already defined). I have run TMGU to find out the roles. I can't do Events/Change Event Type because I have thousands of Births that shouldn't be changed. Thanks for the help Linda Reinfeld
