    3. John, I checked the two brothers and both have "U.S. Standard Name" In fact, I checked everyone in the family and they were *all* "U.S. Standard Name", even though 4 were indexed in one group and 6 in another. 3. Jim, It's possible you created custom Name Styles without doing so deliberately. The Surname sort template is a property of a Name Style. To see which Name Style is used by a name, double-click the name record to open the Tag Entry window. You'll see a button labeled "Name Style". The text to the right of the button is the current Name Style. For U.S. users, the Name Style is typically "U.S. Standard Name". Open the two names for the brothers to see if they are using the same Name Style. If they are both using "U.S. Standard Name", we can move on to other possible causes. If they are not the same, or they are the same, but they are not using "U.S. Standard Name", let me know. John

    1. [TMG] Surname Index shows two entries for same surname
    2. Jim Slade
    3. SS Surname Index shows two entries for same surname and in Master Name Index shows two groupings with same surname. There are two brothers from same family where one shows up in one index group and his brother in the other group. I have checked spelling in TMG to see if there is extra space or some hidden reason why two groups show up, but can find no reason. What else could I check? using TMG v9.05, SSv6.2.9, Windows 10/64 Thanks, Jim

Hi Nancy, I cover setting fonts in the Style chapter of my on-line book: http://www.mjh-nm.net/STYLE.HTML#DisplayFonts If I understand you correctly, I don't know of a way in TMG: "I also can find no settings which affect the date and location fields in the Tag Entry screen, the repeat fields popup lists, the list of people in the Bookmarks, nor the size of fonts in the “Tips and Hints” separate window." I also mention in a footnote: "It is possible that some font size MS Windows Advanced Display Option for one of the many types/versions of MS windows may affect some of the fields which do not have a TMG option, but I have not discovered one." You can try various MS Windows font size settings and you may find something which helps. Michael

    2. John Cardinal
    3. TMG users, Near the end of March, I announced a free license offer: purchase a web hosting package from my Family History Hosting service, and receive a free license for either Second Site or GedSite. That offer expired on March 31st. I published the offer via Dick Eastman's newsletter, and I don't think many TMG users heard about it. Almost all the responses were for GedSite. I should have announced the offer here, too, given it's a popular spot for TMG users. So, for the next ten days, I am repeating the offer but only announcing it here and on the WG Forum. If you want to get online, this is the way to do it. You'll get a free license for Second Site (or GedSite, if you want), and I will personally help you through the steps of publishing your first site. If you already have a license for Second Site, you can give the free license to someone else. To take advantage of the offer, contact me off-list at JFCardinal@gmail.com. This offer expires at midnight on April 20th, 2017. John Cardinal Second Site - GedSite - Family History Hosting

Thanks so much for the confirmation. One more question, if I may. I have a Second Site heavily customized language, and as I am installing TMG on my new PC, I am getting the message about strings.dbf and exporting my custom language. I remember doing this in 2014, but can't find exact directions in these archives or on the WG Community site. Maybe I'm not using the right search terms. At any rate, is this correct process? 1) Install the last version of TMG on my notebook. Do I select yes or no to overwrite my strings.dbf file as I will be restoring a backup later? Does it matter? 2) From my old notebook that still has my project open, I select File/Language/Customize/Export and export my customized language. 3) After restoring a backup on my new PC, I open my project and select File/Lanugage/Customize/Import and import the language file I exported in step 2. Am I missing anything? Just want to be sure I understand what I am doing so I don't have rework. Thanks! Cheryl

File Access Denied c:\Programdata\TheMasterGenealogist v9\repair.chk 11 TMGAPPOBJ.MFOXFIX There are three options: 1. Retry (Selecting this simply yields the same message) 2. Abort ( If this is selected the program runs with no apparent problem) 3. Ignore (If selected I get the following message-Repair mode has been activated. The application will now operate more slowly as it validates each file that is opened. Repair mode will off the next time you run. I click OK and TMG appears to run correctly but I will repeat this process every time I run.) I understand that one could say "What's the problem? Click Abort." However I am somewhat nervous about being so dependent on a no longer supported program. I want to keep it as clean as possible. Can you tell me how to make this go away or can you at least reassure me that there is no problem? Garry Brown gsbrown@q.com

    3. The love of my life spilled a glass of champagne on my 3 year old notebook PC, and it is dying a slow death. (My PC, that is!) I have a new notebook and am incredibly grateful that I had just put a 2TB storage system on my network and backed up to it. I am now moving files and installing programs on my new notebook. The date of my last TMG project backup is 24 March 17. I have done maybe 10 hours worth of work in TMG since then; work I would rather not lose, if possible. Before I realized my backup was 10 days old, I'd deleted my TMG files from the old notebook but not uninstalled the program. I copied the files in my TMG v.9 user folder (data files, not program files) from my storage device back to old the old notebook. Then I opened the program and TMG said it was running in repair mode; rebuilt the indexes, etc. The result seems to be stable and my data appears to be there. Is there any risk to backing up this project created from copied files, and installing the resulting updated .sqz file to my new PC? I would, of course, keep my 24 March backup, but if there is a possibility that I've damaged something by copying my data files back to my old notebook rather than restoring a backup, I'd rather know now, than a month from now after more data entry's been done. Thanks! Cheryl Freeman

HRE raises the Location to the equivalent status and tools that are associated with Persons. An HRE Location has its own Location ID with Name Variants defined by Location Name Tags. One Location Name Variant can be marked primary, while others can be selected for output with a particular Event, Task or Repository. Locations have user-definable Location Flags. A Location in HRE is classified as a "Group-Derived" type of data. This means that, unlike Persons (which are Biological Items), a Location can be split into smaller Locations or a number of Locations can be combined into a larger Location, e.g. plots of land. These can be persons, places, things, events, sources, etc. You can define a number of different relationships between these Focus Items, and assign properties to them. properties describe the item by itself, being things like a name, description, sex, etc. Relationships are any sort of interaction or interrelationship between items, like was parent of, married, contains, became, documents, etc (these are in TMG thing like the relationship tags, event tags, and source citations). This is a very general purpose model, which can be adapted for lots of different usages. Some items have a built in meaning, so that for instance the parent-of relationship can be used to build a genealogical tree. Others can be invented by the user to represent any interaction they want. There will no longer be a need for a pseudo-person, as the focus item concept IS generalized, so there is no need to be pseudo about it. -- Richard Damon
