The Gedstar website only mentions Android functionality. BTW the program is now free but with limited support and no guarantee of compatibility with future Windows versions. JohnH ________________________________________
Bill, Your first step should be to contact support@whollygenes.com and ask for your most current serial number. Include your name, address. If you were using an old email address when you purchased your last TMG license, provide that email address, too. That message may not be answered promptly, but it will be answered. In the meantime, you can download an installer for TMG. You should get the latest installer for the version of TMG you were using. So, for example, if you were using TMG v9, then you want the installer for TMG v9.05. If you were using TMG v8, then you want the installer for TMG v8.08. After installing, you'll have 30 days to use TMG without registering it. Hopefully, you'll have your license number by then. Hope this helps. John
I have been forced to change computers. I have an old TMG serial number but no installation disk. Is there any way to get back into operation with TMG. Thanks for your help. Bill Lyons, a TMG user since the beginning -- William (Bill) Lyons, 3082 Old Cabin Lane, Smyrna GA 30080, 770-805-9017
That's what I understood also. But when I signed into my account it automatically started uploading my FamViewer tree. That's the only genealogy tree on my phone. I panicked but got it stopped. My understanding is that the Ancestry App ONLY works with Ancestry.com trees. If you don't have an Ancestry.com tree, don't even bother looking at the Ancestry App, it wont do you any good. The IPAD uses the Apple IOS operating system which I believe is the same as the IPhone. I use a SmartPhone which uses the Android Operating System. Obviously neither will run TMG. But, I have GEDSTAR on my SmartPhone. GEDSTAR also has a version that runs on the IPhone and I suspect will run on the IPAD Mini. The nice thing about GEDSTAR is that it has direct transfer capability. Actually, GEDSTAR has a program (GEDSTAR for Windows) that runs on your computer , reads your project, and creates a file which you then upload to the phone/IPAD. GEDSTAR basically has four views -- a Details view similar to the Person View of the TMG Details window. -- a Family View similar to TMG's Family View of its Details window The other two views are an Ancestor (pedigree) chart, and a Descendant (Lineage) chart. It also has four lists - Images, Sources, Repositories, and Research Tasks.. It is easy to navigate from person to person. And its picklist is similar to TMG's Lee
I use gedstar pro on my tablet - it is free, and while I cannot add to it on the tablet - I can see everything in my tree. It might work for an ipad. Worth looking into. The other obvious answer is to create a Second Site site. Then you can go to it online OR just create an offline site with Second Site and use Good Reader to access it on your iPad. You have to get the Good Reader app and upload your SS file to it. I've done it and it works with all the TMG features but is more complicated than just using FamViewer. I've found FamViewer from the Apple Store to work great. Of course it's just for viewing from a GEDCOM upload but works for me. I get sources, tags, notes and list of exhibits (but the exhibits are unavailable). Great when traveling without computer. If you have acquired a copy of Rootsmagic, either for testing or just for additional reports, they have a free IOS App that reads the Rootsmagic file. It looks pretty nice on the iPad. Please, I'm not suggesting that you switch to RM. I still use TMG, but do have a copy of RM which I got for testing. Now I keep RM around for the iPad connection and sometimes pulling from Ancestry.com. BTW, Ancestry.com has a slick free IOS App too, if you have a Ancestry account. I love the Ancestry App best of all. Yes, updating TMG manually is a pain, but I still do it, because of the interface. John, yes, Optimizing the database and rebuilding SS eliminated the problem of duplicate surname groups in the index. Thank you very much for your on target advice.
