Dear TMG Community: I'm busy cleaning up my TMG project database getting it ready for Second Site as well as printing out a Journal Report. I recall a discussion on this group some time ago regarding using a separate tag for the exhibit rather than attaching it to the tag itself. For example: a Birth Tag plus an additional Birth Tag with a copy of the birth record attached as an exhibit. I believe this could prove especially beneficial when you want to print out a report and exclude the exhibit (although I believe one can choose that in the Report Options as well) and in Second Site it might make for a cleaner look. I have been trying to work through this issue for quite a while. I split my sources, so my first inclination was to attach the exhibit to the source itself. However in Second Site the viewer would have to dig down almost three layers to find the exhibit and to my mind this defeats the purpose of having the source's exhibit handy for viewing. I would appreciate it if you would be kind enough to share your thoughts on how you handle the issue of attaching exhibits to tags. Kind regards, Sandy Imyak

Only if the OS and registry was part of the image copied... If the new machine is "new" (virgin OS, no applications installed) then one will have to go through the tedium of finding installers for all applications, and manually running all those installers. I currently have, on an external drive, a directory containing 180 files, taking up 18GB... All containing software installation files that I have had to download (at some time) and install on my current drive (my Win7 drive failed in December, and lacking Win7 install media, the replacement drive had to be populated with a new copy of Win10). That doesn't count the software for which I had disks, nor that in which the downloaded installer is, itself, a downloader of the final product. -- bieber.genealogy@earthlink.net Dennis Lee Bieber HTTP://home.earthlink.net/~bieber.genealogy/
Actually, I have done a full partition to full partition image transfer many times when doing beta testing for Windows and Norton and it works fine. You do however, need to also image and restore any hidden partitions that Windows creates so this is not a recommended procedure. But as Terry and other have said, backing up your program file, email address and serial number is the best way to go. Fred, No, that has never worked. You need to install TMG using an installer, and then unlock it with your serial number and the correct name and email address. If you don't know how to do that you should be worried. You need to prepare for that event now while you can. See my article at http://tmg.reigelridge.com/future.htm#wait to see what you need to do. This moving to a new computer thing now worries me a little. I don't remember how my current version of TMG got onto the computer I'm using but I think it was in a straight disk to image disk copy. On the preference tab to setup the automatic relationship tag, there is an option to refresh the relationships. Pressing that recomputes things, so they will be right again (until you add people or edit relationships) -- Richard Damon
With all the DNA cousins everyone has floating around I have been spending quite a bit of time looking at the Relation option that is in the Details screen. What I am seeing is that some cousins are shown as No blood relation with me in this section. (This is assuming I have set myself to be the person it compares back to.) If I use Tools --> Relationship Calculator, the relationships are calculated correctly. I know this is more flexible since I can check relationships between two people besides myself but you but this is a manual process rather than an automatically matching to me. Is there any way to get the Relation information in the Details screen to display correctly? Thanks Walter

The TMG Utility also has an Add Standard Name function. It allows you to choose the kind of Name Tag to add in this case. I have a Custom Tag called Name-Std for this purpose. Lee
One of the button actions which can be added to a Custom Toolbar is "Toggle Relative auto-tag". If you add this to your toolbar, clicking it once will turn off the automatic "Relation" tag, then clicking it a second time will turn it back on after recalculating the relationships. I find this a quick and handy way to refresh the relationships. See Terry's Tips on creating custom toolbars: http://tmg.reigelridge.com/toolbars.htm#custom Hope this gives you ideas, Michael
I just entered a family along with children and their wives from a family history book. While adding additional information, I realized that this source had the surname spelled wrong. Is there an easy way to fix these once without going back to each person? I looked at the TMG Utility but did not see a way there unless I missed it? I will also need to add an the misspelled name from the book as an alternate name. Thanks in advance Walter Wood http://mywoodfamily.us

Joan, As some other people mentioned, you can use Second Site to make HTML pages, and then copy the pages to the iPad using GoodReader. Second Site is a great way to view/review your data, and very, very handy when doing research or showing information to a family member or another researcher. If you publish your site on the web, you can make it private and get the same benefits as copying it directly to your iPad or other device. The added benefit is you can give other interested people the password and that can be useful. I have a couple private sites and some people with shared interests use those private sites pretty often. The Second Site "Search" feature is really handy. If you are looking at source material, and you find a record for "Mary, the wife of Bill Jones", you can find the candidates in your project easily because the SS search can find people based on spouse names even if you don't have married names in your project. When I am entering data in TMG, I often keep my full-project web site open in the browser because it's faster and easier to find people with the SS search than it is with TMG's picklist. If you use FHH as your web hosting service, the "Publish" feature in Second Site makes it fast and easy to update your site. That works for both public and private sites. If this all seems like an unabashed plug for Second Site and Family History Hosting, that's only because it is! <g> One downside of using a web-hosted site is that it is only available if you have an Internet connection. For most people, it's pretty rare to not have a connection, but YMMV. John

You can go to the upgrade center of the WholyGenes web site at: <http://www.whollygenes.com/upgrades.htm> and select to download the installation file for the TMG version for which your old TMG serial was assigned. Once you have that installation file downloaded, just go to Windows' File Explorer to locate the file and double-click on it. It will begin the installation just like it did with your installation disk. You didn't say what version the serial number is for. You might mention that in case there are some pointers about your TMG version and newer computers. For example, early versions of TMG will not work on 64-bit computers. There may be work-arounds for some of these. Lee
Bill Lyons originally asked: > I have been forced to change computers. > I have an old TMG serial number but no installation disk. > Is there any way to get back into operation with TMG. John Cardinal replied: >> ... ask for your most current serial number... >> In the meantime, you can download an installer for TMG. And Fred Rump wondered: > why can't he just back up and move the files? As John explained, he needs his license information. In addition, you cannot install the TMG program by simply copying all the program files. The installation process also inserts required entries in the operating system's Registry. This is why one needs to run the installer so the program will be set up correctly. Michael
