I have been having trouble with my TMG program, when I just noticed that a red "Filtered" was above the tags on the Detail section of the Standard Screen that is probably causing my problems Could one of the readers please tell me how to get rid of this red "Filtered". I'm not sure though I used to know! TIA Jim Payne New Zealand
Is there any character length limit on file names for TMG exhibits when using SSG? Greg
If you want to put your exhibits on Ancestry along with your people, The only option that comes to mind would be to use FTM2017 when it becomes available or possibly Rootsmagic as it should be using similar software to sync to Ancestry. Availability was delayed due to last minute bugs. On 5/6/2017 11:55 AM, Ed Hotchkin wrote: > Yes, I do mean to a tree. If so, how? > > Marion Harcourt First, I would suggest that your TMG project NOT be in the Dropbox folder. There is a possibility of getting database corruption there is Dropbox open a file to back it up while TMG is running and trying to access the file. That said, I am using a very similar setup, except my project is on the C: drive, but my exhibits are in dropbox mapped (as a share) to a drive letter. One possibility is that the path has gotten too long. I notice in your comments, you have ... in the paths, a sign that something isn't showing the full length. In my case my exhibits have a short path of W:\Genealogy\Exhibits\filename.jpg -- Richard Damon
Marion Harcourt noted: > I moved all my Documents and Pictures to Dropbox > about two months ago for easy access away from home > (for other documents) and for backup. Hi Marion, As Richard Damon replied the particular way in which you use Dropbox "can" lead to significant problems with TMG. It is not clear exactly how you are using Dropbox, but some people have successfully used Dropbox with their TMG images, so it "may" work. > My TMG Project is now Y:\Dropbox\apps... I believe this is an example of use which can cause problems. I believe all TMG project database files should be on the local disk. The folders containing such files also should not be subject to Dropbox backup. The two programs can interfere with each other and cause database files to become corrupted. To backup project files use TMG to create a .SQZ backup file on the local disk, then either copy/move that file to a folder on the disk being backed up, or copy move it directly to dropbox. As for the documents folder, you do not want Dropbox to have any access to a folder in which TMG will be creating a report document. The two programs can interfere with each other and cause corruption. > On that screen I can click ‘Load’ and enter the correct address > for the image... TMG can follow that path. Somehow. The problem with TMG and programs like Dropbox having simultaneous access to files is that it works "sometimes" but not others. So access to one image does not surprise me. I do not know the internals of Dropbox, but I am guessing since you said you "moved" all of these files to Dropbox, the "Load" action caused Dropbox to download a local copy of that one image to your local disk? > I ran Validate File Integrity, entered: > Search folder: y:\Dropbox\... and subfolders. That is the > same folder address of the picture I just ‘Loaded’. If my above assumption about "Load" is true, then TMG found the one local disk copy but there were no other local disk copies to find, so it could not change the internal TMG pathname for each of those files. I am guessing that the y:\Dropbox... is the local disk folder where Dropbox creates a local copy of the file from its Internet storage when it is asked for the file and notices a local copy does not exist. > Is this problem solvable? If so, how? I am guessing that you need local copies of the images on the local disk for TMG. Since TMG is likely to only "read" these image files there is less problem with both Dropbox and TMG having simultaneous access to such "read-only" files. I would suggest that you keep all the images in a separate local disk folder, but configure Dropbox to maintain a backup copy of that separate folder. That way they are accessible away from home and backed up, but are local for TMG to use. Hope this gives you ideas, Michael
TMG 9.5; Mac with Parallels; Dropbox on the Mac side. Pictures on the Mac side. TMG data on the Mac side. Naturally, TMG program is in the C:/ drive Everything got along fine. For years. I moved all my Documents and Pictures to Dropbox about two months ago for easy access away from home (for other documents) and for backup. I purchased more space on Dropbox, so I know the space is there. If all that matters. All is well except TMG cannot find any images. My TMG Project is now Y:\Dropbox\apps\The Master Genealogist 9.5\Project MGH_PJC. I can open the project. Now I select an image in a 'Wht ...' Exhibit folder, click Properties. It says: Y:\pictures\1Exhibits\Wh… sideburns.png (not found) On that screen I can click ‘Load’ and enter the correct address for the image: y:\Dropbox\pictures\1Exhibits\Wht … sideburns.png, and it enters the image. So I know TMG can follow that path. Somehow. I ran Validate File Integrity, entered: Search folder: y:\Dropbox\pictures\1Exhibits and subfolders. That is the same folder address of the picture I just ‘Loaded’. "Validation complete. No problems found. 1030 external exhibit files were checked. 1029 exhibit files were not found." (The one I just Loaded.) Is this problem solvable? If so, how? Marion Harcourt

Ed: I tried for years uploading my extensive genealogical database from TMG to first RootsWeb and then later to Ancestry. both of these require a gedcom file transfer that leaves the final family tree must less informative than my original data. Exhibits are lost citations are lost and some data is lost. I finally discovered John Cardinal's Second Site (SS) software ( http://ss.johncardinal.com/), which allows me to upload my entire TMG stabase almost completely intact (exhibits, citations, etc.) to my own website. Conveniently, if you don't already have web space somewhere, John also hosts genealogical websites at his Family History Hosting (FHH). Creating the website from scratch and uploading your data is a pretty painless process. You can see mine at www.acvancestors.com. There is an active SS Users Group mail list you can subscribe too as well. Finally, John offers excellent customer support to non-technical people like me. So if your 12000 plus people and all of their information is in TMG, SS is an excellent solution. Yes, I do mean to a tree. I am 90+ years old and looking for multiple ways to save my 12,000 plus Hotchkin Family History. Many people have been copying bits of my website and putting it on Ancestry, so I would like to put the whole thing there, including Exhibits. Jim Sounds like you have the Details window filtered for a particular type of Tag. Right click on the window, in the new window hover over "Filter for" and deselect any of the choices that have a tick mark next to them. I have been having trouble with my TMG program, when I just noticed that a red "Filtered" was above the tags on the Detail section of the Standard Screen that is probably causing my problems Could one of the readers please tell me how to get rid of this red "Filtered". I'm not sure though I used to know! This conversation is reminding me of the time, about 6 years ago, when I received a 60+ MB Family Tree Maker file from my sister-in-law. It probably had about 9,000 people, but quite a large number of images. The plan was to import it into TMG and then use SS to make a website. This all happened, but it was a struggle getting started. My recollection is that the file came into TMG with all exhibits internal. This bogged down TMG so much that the project seemed practically unusable (maybe something else was also wrong but I can't remember all the details now). I then discovered that John's TMG Utility could convert all internal images to external -- all at once. Fantastic! After that the project behaved just fine; sadly it still needs more cleanup, because of the strange (from the TMG point of view) placement of various items in the FTM file. I'm taking a different approach now, gradually adding the pieces I want into a project of my own. I don't know that TMG only creates BMP files, but with my limited testing, it does not create JPG files. This implies that only BMP files are created So, yes, TMG Utility is much better. In addition to converting to the various File Types, it also can convert all at once. With TMG, you would have to convert one at a time. Not bad if that is all that is desired and if only BMP is desired. Lee

You shouldn't have to put the images anywhere because most programs that read the GEDCOM file will find the images just fine. There are some cases where that won't work, so it would help to know what you are doing with the GEDCOM after you export it. You haven't explained that, but I suggest you do. You'll get better help that way. John
Lee, If TMG always creates BMP images, then I'd suggest using the Export Images feature in TMG Utility instead. It uses an image processing library to determine the current format of the image, including JPG, GIF, etc., and will save the file as that type. John

It could be done in v4x and earlier, but I don't think it changed with v5 and later. As for Audio, Video, and OLE object, I suspect those are by definition always External

If the user wants to create an External Exhibit from an Internal Exhibit, TMG will create a BMP type file. In the Exhibit Log, right-click on the desired Exhibit, and in the Properties window, click on the down-arrow beside the field that says Internal Image and select the External Image file option which will display the Save to External Image window. The default Exhibit folder File Path will be entered, but may be changed as desired. Also the default Filename will be New Image.BMP, so change the Filename as desired (not sure if TMG can create other file formats). Click [OK] to save the Exhibit as an External File and that is it. To try this, open the SAMPLE project and try it. The default SAMPLE project has 18 External Exhibits. Lee
