Why is repetition necessary? As Lee explained, Validate may fix some issues the first time, but if anything is fixed those may have been masking other issues. So any time Validate says it fixed something, always run another Optimize then Validate in case it can now find other issues to fix. But if Validate has found nothing to fix, then just do a final Optimize and quit. Michael

Almost all of these are administrative errors. By itself, any one problem will rarely be a real problem. The most usual is where the index get out. Then you wind up going to a different person than the one intended, getting a report for the wrong person, etc. The log does tell you some of what was done, but it is often somewhat generic in its reporting. I often don't even look at the log unless there are missing Exhibits. > So ... at some point is there supposed to be no difference after >doing Optimize/Validate repeatedly? No. Lee

    3. Hello, all, How many times is one supposed to Optimize and then Validate File Integrity? I have often done this 5-6 times and still end up eventually with something like 1.3 million bytes difference. Note: I used to do this just once until a few years ago when someone mentioned it should be done repeatedly. If I add quite a bit to the project, it may at first indicate 2 or 3 million bytes difference, but eventually gets stuck at this 1.3 million figure and never seems to go lower (although I've never repeated Optimize/Validate more that five or six times, I think). What exactly are these procedures doing and why don't they do whatever it is they are supposed to do the first time round, right up front? Why is repetition necessary? And when Validate File Integrity says it has corrected a problem (once, four problems found, I believe), I'd still like to know what the problem was. Earlier Terry or Lee said to check a log, but the one time I did that, I didn't see anything indicating what was changed. So what kind of problems does Validate catch? So ... at some point is there supposed to be no difference after doing Optimize/Validate repeatedly? Sam

At the top of the report definition screen > click the Reset Defaults button. That will certainly reset that Report Definition to the original definition for that type of report, but ... you said: >> I severely customized one of the original TMG report forms... If you want to save those customizations, FIRST bring up that customized report definition and click "Add" at the top and give it the name you would want for that customized report. TMG will ask you if this new Report Definition you are adding should "Apply the current option settings to the new report?" Answer "Yes" and then save this new report definition. ONLY NOW again bring up the default Report Definition and click the Reset Defaults button to reset the options to default. You can now save that Definition with its default options. Then you will have both definitions available for use. Michael

Second, that "The Master Genealogist v8" folder is in your <username> Documents folder and this is probably located on your C: hard drive. Next, is the Backups sub-folder of the above folder set as the Backups file path in Preferences=>Current Project Options=>Advanced? Finally, is the Backup Wizard, Step2 set for the Backup file to be in the above default folder? The message you are getting points to a permissions problem During a backup, TMG creates the resulting Backup SQZ file using one or more temporary work files. These often are created in the folder in which the resulting SQZ file is/will be placed. If the Backup SQZ file is not being created default folder then it must be to another folder that has full permissions. For example, you cannot backup to a thumbdrive or other external drive. Lee

    3. Rather often when working in TMG I do something that causes an "Open File" selection window to open. This window opens automatically to C:\Program Files (x86)\The Master Genealogist v9 and indicates "Files of type: Table/DBF (*.dbf)". I assume that whatever I have done is making TMG look for a DBF file, none of the *.dbf files available in this window (at C:\Program Files (x86)\The Master Genealogist v9) work. Each time I select a file and click "OK" the file select window just opens again. Clicking "Cancel" closes the window, but it immediately re-opens. Clicking on the "X" in the upper right of the window does nothing. All the rest of TMG is inaccessible while this window is open. The only way I can get out of this is to do a [Ctrl] [Alt] [Del] to get Task Manager and close TMG from there. I have not been able to figure out what key combination I may be typing that causes this window to open, but it happens several times in a multi-hour work session and is pretty annoying. Can anyone help me understand: 1. What I might be doing to make this happen, and 2. If there are any actions I can take to close the window without having to go Task Manager to kill TMG? Thanks for any help! Greg
